On the 2000 model,(I think this applies to all 98-02 models) there is also a 17mm nut, just below the 19mm tensioner fitting. It serves to hold the actual tensioner arm in place. If your car has lots of miles, and/or subject to road salt corrosion, it might be VERY advisable to loosen this nut off a turn or so before attempting to relieve belt tension by torquing the 19mm fitting. I was working on a 180K mileage car, & the shaft the tensioner rotates on (17mm nut) was somewhat seized. The 19mm fitting is only cast aluminum, & it actually snapped off when I turned it using a 2' breaker bar on the socket. I managed to get the belt on, but now it had little tension. Once I loosened the 17mm nut, the arm rotated back & tensioned the belt. I then tightened the 17mm nut. In hindsight, I should have loosened the 17mm nut first, then released tension via the 19mm cast fitting. In the video, it appears it is quite easy to rotate the 19mm fitting, if you experience much resistance, try backing off the 17mm nut. HTH someone

i wish i read the comments before tackling the job. I destroyed the auto tensioner. snapped it clean off!!! The only way to replace the tensioner is to remove the bolts holding the right engine mount and jacking up the engine by the oil pan. All this when all I wanted to do was just change an alternator...
@EdibleEcology5 жыл бұрын
Had to make almost three full turns on the 17mm fitting until I could rotate the 19mm fitting. I still put a lot of force into it, but I probably would have snapped it if I didn't read your comment. I just noted all the turns I made so I wouldn't forget (18 from 12oclock to 10 o'clock) Thanks for saving me the headache.

Kinda suffering with this one. I bought the new belt and pulley arm. Been two months trying to get the trick of the belt to go on properly. I loosened the 17mm nut to its extreme. Then I Loosened the pulley arm to ease tension. I'm about to loosen the pulley arm again to get the belt over the alternator. This is a New England car so I've changed as much possible regarding corrosion. Anything else should I be doing

Hey! great video, but a word of advice thatd help us watchers understand better: before you start your camera shot with a close-up can you first come in with a wide view of the engine bay (or whatever section youre working on) ive noticed this in several of your video and although most DIY will know where to look other less experienced guys will still have to do extra research instead of a one stop shop :) thanks!

Thanks for the video! Surprisingly, I've never done a belt on a transverse mounted engine. Several videos call for a special serpentine belt tool. Instinctively, I thought a breaker bar would work but you proved it! Just finished. Thanks again.
@NutzAboutBolts2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the tool helps with leverage since it’s skinny and long, and can fit in tight spaces, but a breaker bar works too since it is long and fits between the auto tensioner and the frame.

Thanks again for this guide. Quick, easy to follow and clear. I used it years back to do my serpentine belt for the first time and it happened to be the same one I watched again. Could have gone on longer on the belt in there but had the new one anyways. Did spark the plugs and pcv valve too. Hope my car has some more life in it, car market among other markets have been busted for a few years now.

I'm actually facing this situation myself and needing to get this replaced. is it really as straight forward? is there anything I should be warey of?
@richardmacsinka4919 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, Its a good idea (advisable) to loosen a the mounting bolt for the tensioner, about a turn and a half. This allows the tensioner to pivot freely. Its a 17mm just below the 19mm as mentioned below, that way the tensioner isn't locked in hard against the case. Otherwise you will be fighting or trying to overcome the force that is caused with this bolt being tightened and you could break something. When the new belt is on and in position, retighten the bolt.

Patrick O'Sullivan the belt tensioner is automatically adjusted, you don't need to put any tension or torque it down since it's an "auto tensioner". I hope that helps?

+Will Smith remove the auto tensioner bolt and loosen the belt, if the belt doesn't loosen... then you might have to cut the belt off and replace the auto tensioner.
@goethert8 жыл бұрын
NutzAboutBolts Thank you so much for the reply. Just found your channel and like it very much. What is the difficult level to change the tensioner? Easy/Medium/Hard? I want to make sure I can handle it before I get it off.
@NutzAboutBolts8 жыл бұрын
+Will Smith if you had all the tools, I would say easy to medium since you need to use tools to remove a component. Also I just remember, you are replacing the serpentine belt anyways, so might as well cut it off and then remove the auto tensioner. So the only hard part is putting everything back together.
@goethert8 жыл бұрын
NutzAboutBolts I have all the tools except HARMONIC BALANCER PULLER. Not sure if it is necessary. Actually I was unlucky to break the 19mm tensioner nut, but I was luck enough to break it at the moment of finishing the belt installation. So I have new belt installed with a broken tensioner. I worry about the next time I change the belt. Maybe it is a good idea to replace the tensioner.
@NutzAboutBolts8 жыл бұрын
+Will Smith ouch that sucks. You don't need the harmonic balancer puller. just try to unbolt the auto tensioner and replace the part.

Not like you can really see anything when your doing this job anyways... Mainly becuase your arms are in the darn way! So he is showing you what to expect... If he could have done it not blind, while also being able to get great camera angles you would still be lost trying to do it yourself.... Cause you can't actually see.... Hence why he described all the parts and tools and bolts you touch so perfectly... Not everything has to be spoon fed to you, and if you feel like you need a 3d cutaway diagram xray view of what he is talking about.... You most likely have no business even attempting to take on this particular project.....
