I was part of the TWR Volvo team we had won the BTCC a few days earlier. Packed everything up went Oz and won an amazing race. Happy memories 😊

That must’ve been so amazing! I’m a trained precision mechanic who became automotive engineer and my dream is it to join a race team for at least a season to work with them! I would do it completely for free since my company has to option of a sabbatical where they keep paying me, even if I don’t work for a few months. Unfortunately I know nobody in the racing industry.. I did some track days, even a training weekend in formula BMW cars, but I couldn’t get any contacts to racing teams who where looking for people. I have the feeling it’s very hard to get into it today, while back in the good old days of racing you could join a team much easier, since there where much more little private teams around who’d gladly accept help. These days the teams all appear very uptight and snobby. It seems they only accept rich people with already existing contacts in the industry which is very sad. Touring cars were for everyone back then! These days there’s almost no chance for the regular guy to go touring car racing on their own budget.

Great upload!! 25:13 - that netting was actually an idea from a certain Mrs. Petty to stop her fella from banging his head on a wall - Joe Weatherly is a solid example of the time before window netting, crashing into the retaining wall and him bumping his head on the wall. He died in the accident. Little bits of trivia like that fascinate me. Aint insomnia a bitch??

I was listening to the V8 Sleuth podcast with Alan Gow who owns the TOCA rights for the BTCC and he said the 1997 & 1998 Bathurst 1000's were the BTCC cars were used was because of a fallout between Channel 7 and V8 Supercars over broadcasting and prize money. It only ran for 2 years before Channel 7 realised it was just as expensive to ship the cars & teams from the UK than to pay the Supercars what they thought they were worth. There were local teams running in this race too to make up the field but the BTTC cars were way ahead of them. TWR, 888 / Holden (Vauxhall) had teams in the BTCC anyway so they could use V8 drivers in their cars. Podcast well worth a listen.

@@Holden308 What's your point?
@Holden3085 жыл бұрын
@@PMGF point is that Supercars are only the latest in the list of categories that have run in the race, a list that includes Series Production, Group C, Group A and Super Touring. And when Supercars go another category will probably step in. Its not just a Supercars race, though they have a habit of trying to re-write history to suit themselves. The three races at Phillip Island from 1960-62 usually get ignored simply because they weren't at Bathurst while any race or car before Supercars took over in 1997 that was won by a non-V8 (mostly the turbo Group A era and Super Touring) usually gets ignored by them. And some fans also have an annoying habit of forgetting that there was touring car racing before V8 Supercars.....

V8 Supercars offered Super tourers main support category for the 1000 they could of had a 500 K race on Saturday but they they told the V8 boys to piss off because the V8's are DINOSAURS 😁 and you won't last long lol, Well it's the 2020 Bathurst 1000 this weekend with the dinosaurs still running around 👍 Super tourers didn't last long in Australia may 4-5 years I think, Some say they should of taken the deal.

typical murray walker waffle with inaccurate commentary. I was the team leader for the Honda integra that got shunted off by a BMW at the caltex chase, not "had a moment", then later in that race after we had done major repairs and kept going they again comment about the honda blocking the leaders when the reality was that the track was very dirty and full of marbles by this time and any move off the racing line would have meant a trip into barrier. that's why maurice didn't move and neither did the faster car pass him - both men knew the score. We ended up being the last qualified finisher in 19th place, despite our small budget and idiot commentary. please note that maurice had driven the circuit in the porsche support races in our 964 cup car at far great speeds for many laps before the main event so knew the track and its hazards well.
