Well it happened a second time and those of you that have been following this saga are rather upset that the owner once again didn't check or top off the oil, don't be too hard on them as you can see in the video it was burning a significant amount of oil I would say about a quart ever 1000K or so. It now has a fresh reman and runs like a champ but here are the 'highlights' of the swap that I hope you'll find entertaining, enjoy.

My mom did these guys one better with her Acura Legend. She managed to weld the pistons to the cylinder walls, blow apart the torque converter, and melt the timing chain cover like candle wax. The head gasket blew and all of the coolant was pumped into the exhaust. The radiator was totally blown apart along the seams by the high temperature steam. We call it a Total Fukushima.

I have almost this same exact motor in my '98 Civic DX, except mine's the D16Y7, not the the "Y8." So no VTEC. But it's ok though, it's still peppy enough to matter. At this time it currently has 209,000+ miles, and I don't know how it's NOT burning oil! It's never been rebuilt either. It is leaking a little from the oil pan and valve cover gaskets and possibly from the distributor seal. I only have to add maybe half a quart every few months or so. It's been such a solid and reliable little motor!

LoudProudNPunk1 mine hit 290 thousand. I had to mix 15-40 oil into it just to keep the thing from burning so much oil. it was burning 1 qrt every 1k miles and with the 15-40 it didn't burn much oil at all. sent it to the junk yard because I didn't want to put a clutch into it.

@EricTheCarGuy Dude! You just diagnosed my exact problem! I have a 2004 3.4l impala and I oddly noticed when I went to do a oil change and tune up, the symptoms you just described. When I drained the oil, only about 2 1/2 qts drained out. and the spark plugs were just like the plugs you had. 2 reasons, I believe. I use royal purple oil but was not informed that the stock replacement filter was not designed to last the 6-7 thousand mile intervals that I was changing the oil.

@EricTheCarGuy I just performed a lot of maintenence on it in the last two weeks and don't want it to fail my dad. (oil change, trans service, rad flush, brake fluid flush, power steer flush, fuel filter, plugs and wires) I just started about 3 months ago with major help from your videos. I plan on bore-ing out and rebuilding my small block 350 in my 82 C10. But that's a toy and pops car is my daily driver. I would really appriciate your advice. Thanks bro.

@EricTheCarGuy Hence the filter at whatever point (prob 3,000 mi or so) stopped efficiently filtering the oil thus plugging up my return holes on the piston, buring oil and fouling the spark plugs. This problem has probably been a long time coming seeing how I was paying a shop to change my oil and was never told that my fluid was low. So, now that I know that I need a long lasting filter to go with my fully synthetic fluid. (used reg ac delco filters for 5 yrs)

those oil control rings are even more important in engines with oil squirt right underneath the cylinders. its hard to see in this video but most stock pistons have two holes for the oil to drain. aftermarket pistons like supertech, je, cp, and wiesco have 4 on each side of the piston.

I had a 95 fiesta 1.1 when i was 19 it leaked oil like the torrey canyon so being a stupid kid i never changed the oil just kept topping up and the results were mutch the same when it went bang. It also put a hole in the block. I still keep the twisted con rod in my toolbox as a kind of trophy.

@psyfertech I've read and heard mixed messages about those additives. The main concern as I understand it is that in a very gunked up engine, you run the risk of a large piece of crap falling off and blocking a small oil passage. Quality modern fully synthetic oils (A4/B4/A5/B5) have plenty of detergents in anyway. If it aint broke.... Probably best to just change the oil regularly and use a good brand.
@TrueBlueEG8
@TrueBlueEG8 12 жыл бұрын
@skaterboy520c all engines burn some oil, hondas more then most, oil can get turned to vapour by a hot, high revving engine, and then it gets drawn through the breather system and burned during combustion, also a certain amount of oil gets passed valve stem seals and piston rings, to actually lubricate combustion chamber, and the upper part of the bores.
@ryancivil
@ryancivil 12 жыл бұрын
@SystemXpander I would say given the amount of oil left in the engine this car also did not see regular service intervals, so this would be neglect on the owners behalf. If you are going to be so ignorant as to not check your oil once and a while, you should at least make sure it is being changed within reasonable time frames. And watch what you say about Eric man, he has more knowledge and talent than you ever will

@ninjaseven1 It's also possible that the cylinder head gasket is leaking oil in combustion chamber. You just have to check oil level from the cars' dipstick, many recommend that weekly. Just wondering, how the owner of this car did not notice the oil pressure light? If the light goes on, the pressure has already dropped enough to do some sort of damage. Always stop the car as fast as you can, if the oil pressure light goes on to prevent any damage.

Just about every time I fill I check the oil on my truck. But, as much as I nag, it is like pulling teeth to get family to do the same thing with their vehicles. And I almost never see other people checking oil when they fill at the gas station. I guess it's surprising how rarely engines blow like this, considering how they get neglected.

Great Video! I learned quite a bit, thank you! Have a question though. I have a 94 corolla, and my spark plugs look similar to those spark plugs. The car does drink oil, a lot of oil! I put a half a quart in every time I fill the gas tank. I've been told the white spark plugs mean it running lean, but your video makes more sense. What would you suggest to clean the oil ports and the oil control ring without taring the engine down?

Since this was the 2nd engine on this car going on a 3rd. Is the primary failure of burning oil was that the 2nd engine had a problem from the get go, or was the oil burning problem caused by lack of proper oil checking & changes? I wonder if the owner of this car must have both money as well as oil to burn?

You should be able to get a F22B1 VTEC Accord engine for less than 700, but OBD1 H22's are kinda rare (especially auto). You may have to go OBD2 and use a unit from the last gen lude.

I checked the oil level in my 2001 Neon 2.0L DOHC Auto w/48,000 miles on it and it was low like below the "min" mark. It still has about 900 miles until its due for another oil change. I've never gone more than 3000 miles without changing the oil.I've topped it off now though. So is it normal for a good running engine for your oil level to go down after about 2000 miles?
