Fun little fact, due to the engines torque being available at 1,400 RPM, and the displacement the 2nd gen trucks with the 8.0 L V10 had more torque than a 2nd gen Cummins and would happily tow just as much as much weight. The only issue was the almost non existent gas mileage. But they cost less than a Cummins, in the RAM enthusiast community this earned them the nickname "poor man's diesel" because they basically took a Cummins truck, replaced all the fuel system and engine with gasser components, but kept the drivetrain and everything else the same because only the diesel drivetrain could handle the stress of the V10 engines low torque band.

I'd love to have a built one of these. Nothing radical, just a cam that actually moves the valves more than 1/4" and enough compression that you can't fit a tennis ball in the cylinder at TDC. I think the pistons should fit the same as the 5.9 Magnum so that wouldn't be hard to find aftermarket stuff. Dodge originally intended the 8.0 to have the same cam and compression specs as the V8, but in testing it kept blowing up automatic transmissions. They had to detune it, when the V8 spec is already a pig. That's part of why the fuel consumption is so unholy, on top of being 8L. The engine has so much potential though. The bones of it are improved over the V8s in several ways.
@modernmasterpiece10 жыл бұрын
The 8.0 Liter V-8 Magnum is in the Chryler LA engine family, the 8.0 Liter Viper Engine is also an L.A. engine and they both have the same stroke. So basically the Magnum V-10 is the same engine save some differences, like the Viper is an all aluminum block and had a slight bump in horsepower for those asking.
@caniwitech10 жыл бұрын
No, the viper engine and the truck engine are totally different. there is not one shared piece between them. the only thing they share is displacement. Look it up before you repsond. i am a 10 year dodge engine tech.

***** and I was responding to you?
@JETZcorp2 жыл бұрын
@@caniwitech They share a lot more than displacement. Bore/stroke are identical. Same rod length. Same cam tunnel height. Same deck height. The Viper engine was developed from the LA V8, at the same time the Magnum was separately developed from the same family. The switch to aluminum required some radical changes, but it was absolutely not a clean-sheet engine. I think Viper people are way too defensive about this. The engines are brothers, and their father is the mighty 340 Six Pack. Grandfather is the 318 Poly-head like you'd find in tailfin cars - one of the best and most underrated V8 engines of all time. But yes, it IS wrong to say the Viper was just the Ram engine with a different metal and some compression or whatever. It was a way more significant change, and people also forget the Viper came out YEARS earlier.

You don't need back pressure, that's actually bad for your engine it makes it work harder to push exhaust gas out, what you need is a good flow which could really only be accomplished but havin something suck the exhaust out or have a smaller pipe for better scavanging but removing the cats and muffler only affects emissions of your engine

More back pressure can take away some horsepower, but it will give you more torque. It's just finding a good balance for the engine and vehicle

Actually if that truck has resonators them it has all the back pressure he needs and if it has catalytic converter's that'll create a little bit more as well and muffle the sound somewhat straight pipe ain't going to hurt anything. I have a Dodge Dakota with a 3.7 L V6 that I have straight piped it sounds good runs better in my opinion haven't noticed any difference in my mileage. But it has two resonators and 2 catalytic converter's so it still has the proper back pressure I love it straight piped wouldn't have it any other way.
