This was special to watch. My grandfather took me to my first (and sadly still my only) NFL game as a kid. He had been raving about this "Peyton Manning" guy a whole bunch, and he wanted to take me to go see him play. I remember it was Colts versus Dolphins, and the Dolphins absolutely crushed them, but it was still such a fun time. I never actually realized all these years later that it was Peyton's first game ever. I was also too young and didn't know enough about football to realize I got to see Peyton and Dan Marino play in person. This was obviously the game... And it's cool as hell to watch it 25 years later.

Really unfortunate for Dan Marino that the Dolphins didn’t have this kind of defense in the 80s or early 90s. Jason Taylor, Zach Thomas, Trace Armstrong, Tim Bowens, Terrell Buckley, Sam Madison…that’s pretty damn good!

Solid between the tackles runner who could carry the ball 25-30 times a game. His lack of break away speed is the reason for his 3.3, 3.6 YPC average. He should've played ten years in the NFL but once teams figured out his limitations they preferred to try other backs, even though most were never as good. The Browns let him go and no one picked him up after only 4-5 seasons.

The young man whose early life I read about in a children's newspaper, Peyton Manning made his NFL debut in this game. Manning was always my favorite quarterback of all-time. Manning may have struggled in the playoffs but it was satisfying to see him finally get two rings with the Colts and Broncos. Brady and the Patriots always seemed to have their number.

For Manning, it wasn’t quite as bad as the final stat line indicates. There were some beautiful flashes throughout the game. But man, those last two throws on their penultimate drive were about as bad as it gets - just absolutely dreadful.

One thing you can't help but notice watching these old Colts games is that Bill Polian's defenses were soft. The Dolphins receivers just had their way with these DBs for years, 98-02. Bill Polian's teams were 1-5 in Super Bowls. No match for the bigger/stronger NFC East teams, 0-4 with the Bills.
