Just putting the tank back in after doing this challenging job. The fuel lines being the biggest. I wound up cutting the line from tank to filter at the rubber/nylon junction. A previous filter change was done aggressively enough to have bent the line going directly to the quick connect at the tank. This is the right side from looking underneath. Bent enough to not allow a straight on push with the disconnect tool. Once I got the tank out was when I discovered the bend in the line. Straightened it out and the disconnect tool went right in and released the old line. Now to rebuild this line.... or pay a fortune for a used replacement. I may even replace the pusher pin at this connect point to ensure a proper seal. Not enough video resources for this job but having gone through it myself now I can understand. Thanks for sharing this.

@friendlyuser1 I would say they are reliable. But i have had some problems: tentioners (elective job) Battery cable bad connection (battery is in the trunk) Fuel Pumps died headliner is falling down Cost of running one is higher than a Toyota Camery for instance. Tires, parts are more expensive. To put it in perspective they cost around $80K new in 98. It has been the best performing, most luxurious car i have ever had. I would not hesitate to get one.

Nice job ... would be really nice to see how to release the fuel lines under the car and how the tank comes out, Robert

I’m just about to tackle this job, somehow. Checked local Jag only shop - $1400 which is a tad rich for my situation. My car was driven into a garage 2.5 years ago by an elderly lady. It’s now in my garage. Everything works and ether in the intake gets a sputter and short run time but 0 pressure or fuel at the rail. All fuses and relays are good. Anyway, as much as I dont want to do it, cutting the package tray out and dealing with rebuilding that might be the easiest thing. Thanks for the video details.

I tried to get the lines out through the bottom--unless you have long slender arms I don't think this is possible without dropping the whole rear subframe... at the very least would have to disconnect the e-brake if attacking from the front of the rear differential. Basically you can see the connection of one line and see part of the other hose that goes into the tank but I couldn't even get my hand on it much less be able to manipulate a tool in there. I decided to be the bad guy and cut a hole in the top of the package tray behind the rear seat. Took about an hour and put a couple of welds back there and sprayed a little undercoating and finished. I applaud those of you out there who can do it the hard way because without dropping everything this wasn't possible....

Thank you for creating this video. I had 3 XJRs before. They were fun cars but they were difficult to maintain. 1999, XJR 100 2002 & 2004. That is amazing that you were able to get the fuel tank out.

Thanks for this.. your jag videos are great.. I also have a 98 XJR.. I'm a bit of s novice but I'm wanting to learn as much as I can about my car and I've learned quite a bit from your videos already.. keep it up.. unfortunately it seems my XJR may have blown a gasket!. it's getting checked out tomorrow. fingers crossed it's just something simple! :)

i am doing a 2001 xj8 fuel pump right at this moment for a friend and enjoyed seeing some foresight from this vid before i did it. I have one question. How in the $@#* did you get your arms over the diff to get to the quick connects?! Between the shafts, the diff, control arm, exhaust, brake cable its nearly impossible, ended up dropping 3 subframe bolts to tilt it down, got one line with some blood, now working on a stubborn second one. 30 minutes to undo the rest of the stuff. Wow these stink!

Throttle bodies respond very well to being cleaned. You can get this in aerosol form

Great vid! I see it's a metal tank... I wonder how it would work with E85, i.e. would the ethanol (or water in it) corrode the tank?

I'm working on a 2000 model but there seems to be something blocking the siphon hose when I try to insert it from the filler tube. Makes it about 10 inches down then gets jammed up. I thought maybe the bend in the filler tube going to top of tank would restrict it some, but it will not go any further. I though maybe in later models they put something in there is prohibit someone from stealing fuel (?).
@mustangtyson

Its just a metal flap near the top, you can use a ice pick or small screwdriver to hold that back.
@DaytonCarCare
@DaytonCarCare 10 жыл бұрын
mustangtyson I know that. The flap is close to the top of the filler nozzle where the cap goes. I'm talking about several inches further down once it starts it's 90 degree bend. I thought the bend was binding it but there's something definitely in there to prevent a siphon hose from getting down into the tank.

When you use this style Siphon you need to slice the end of the hose. Cut it on an angle so that it will glide past a spot of metal that is in the way. about an 1/2 " will do. the hose tends to have a memory and the inside of that curl is where you cut it. I hope your Siphon works better than mine. I had to do away with the bulb ( trashed it) had never worked in the years I've owned it" I go the old route with my mouth. I hate !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Edward S…..I have a question for you since you are so knowledgeable about cars in general. I have a 1998 Jaguar Xj8 and I am having some problems with it having a rough idle, jerking at 30-40mph, and having a slow or hesitant take off from a complete stop or vibrating a lot at about 50mph. Other than that the care drives just fine. If I were to disconnect the negative battery cable, the car drives perfectly for about 20minutes then the trouble start all over again. Whenever the trouble starts, the check engine light comes on with a Restricted Performance light in green. Upon checking the codes, I get the P1396 and the sometimes the other codes which tell you that the gas is too lean or the car may need a MAF sensor. I'm all tapped out since I had the timing chain, tensioners, guides, and gaskets replaced about a week ago so I cannot see why all this is happening, The funny thing is that I when I clean the MAF sensor and the throttle body with carburetor-choke cleaner, the car works perfectly fine for the next 45minutes or so then it reverts back to the same problem. I need help please.

Tyson, I wanted to thank you for this video. Really helped me out!About 1996/7 I worked at Jaguar Whitley and was involved in the design of the AJ26 and AJ27 engines. Even so I didn't know about all the intricacies of changing the pumps. Mines is a later model and it has an anti syphon device - so it was a ball ache draining the fuel. The Evap flange looks different on the later cars too (probably the AJ27 cars as they had to meet a different emissions requirement). How is the car running these days? Do you still own it?
@mustangtyson
@mustangtyson 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, still own it. Fuel pumps still working good. I keep it inside and don't drive it much. Only has 75k miles.
@mds2465
@mds2465 12 жыл бұрын
many cars these days have it so that you can access the fuel pump from inside the car, without having to drop the gas tank. With Jaguars of this generation it's probably not that simple, but you might want to check with the manufacturer about that.

Thank you for uploading. I have a naturally aspirated XJ8 (2000). I had to replace the fuel pump in 2008. Do you have any problems with the throttle body? I had to replace it back in 2005 under the warranty. But now, I have my engine stalled frequently. If you have some thoughts/comments, I would appreciate for it. Happy motoring!

Dang man, it's a free video I made out of my love for cars. Lol. They were not hard for me to get out. I did cut up my arms getting to it though. My dad made a special tool to get them off after he had trouble. Check the Jaguar forums.

Reconnecting the battery with the ignition on can harm the ECM... I'd have a helper turn the key instead to test the relays.

Thanks! Well if i had to do it again i would say it would take me 16 hours. Mechanics will quote you the hours it states in the repair system for the job. Look at alldata for this. That being said, they are going to quote you a hour number based on their labor rate, not the actual time they take to do the job.

Mine are still working. Although if i did it over again i would use the "Fuel Injection Corp" pumps. They fit perfectly unlike the "airtex" pumps.

He got one thing wrong. The fuse sends voltage thru the relay. The ecu activates one side of the relay to open the circuit for the fuse. He said it backwards lol
@axlejohnson9156
@axlejohnson9156 4 жыл бұрын
Your are incorrect. I know it unusual but in the Jag the voltage travels through the relay and then to the fuse before it goes to the pump.
