My 1998 C230 has 255,000 miles and is solid as a rock. Service records indicate regular maintenance by Mercedes trained shops. These are solid machines, were used as taxis in 3rd world countries and are still on the roads. Enjoy! They have a good many features that are not obvious, so read the manual or watch YT videos. The other car in the garage is a 2019 Subaru Legacy. There's no comparison. The M-B seems better, solid, and is more fun to drive.

Really enjoyed the video, Joe! Would like your opinion (or anyone else): I'm considering a $1600, 208k mi 1998 C230 in similar condition with records from a friend who has owned it for three years. Like you said, it "defies its age" and has been VERY reliable for him the last 50k mi or so other than a spring perch snapping off nearly causing a wreck (yikes). I think it's a good value, but I also think it's $1600 that could be put towards a lower mileage example that isn't approaching the age where everything breaks. My other two vehicles are both 200k+, Volvo 740 and old 2.3 Ranger, but don't need much to stay on the road. Thinking this C230 might be a good fit for my fleet, but I don't know the cars well.
@JoesGoldenGarage5 жыл бұрын
Spring perch broke! What! Are u in a rust state? Because that can happen to them in those states. If you go check it out. Have some start it for you while you listen for a rattle at start up. If you here noise from engine At start up. It can be the timing chain. They are more prone to fail on this engine then any other Mercedes engine. If you hear a rattle sound right when the cars starting up that means the chain has already stretched so that’s never a good sign. Otherwise they are a very good and reliable way to get around. Hope this helps.

Hi Joe - enjoyed watching your videos. I too have a 1998 C230 and I just love it (my mom passed it down to me. I leased a 1997 C280 back in 2000, but when my lease expired I chose to return it. My mom on the other hand chose to purchase her 230 once her lease expired, hence that is why I am in possession of the car now). She kept up with all of the maintenance just as your previous owner and that's probably why it's in such good condition (engine wise) - fortunately for me it only has 125k miles on it! I was wondering if you could help me with something. The wood grain panel (or strip) on the driver side door as cracked on part of it has come off. I've tried looking online at some of the car parts sites, but unsuccessful at finding a replacement. Might you know where I can find a replacement? I would really appreciate your assistance and I would like to talk and compare our cars since I've never known anyone who actually happens to have the same car in such great shape (if not better) than mine! Hope to hear from you - Sheila Oh, and by the way, I watched your other video on how to change the head lamp and brake light bulbs - thanks...you saved me a lot of money :).
@JoesGoldenGarage2 жыл бұрын
I never found replacements. The previous owner put woodscrews in Each broken piece And screwed them back on to the door. It did not look the best because you can see the screwheads but if you would buy a dark brown screw instead of a silver screw you probably would not notice. That would trim brakes on every single one of them has Time and years go by. I sold mine a couple of years ago I really enjoyed that car and I wish I hadn’t sold it because it was such a well taken care of Car. It would be real hard to find another one in that good of condition. Good luck with yours and it should serve you well for years to come!

Hello thanks for the video. What would you say the mileage expectancy is for a vehicle like this that has been properly maintained? Thanks in advance
@JoesGoldenGarage3 жыл бұрын
Timing chain is main thing to look for. Frequent oil changes help that. The chain on this one rattled a very little bit
