I just changed my mind about doing this job myself. But thanks for this video anyway, you did help me to make a very important decision! I think that I would rather pay someone else to do this task for me. If you pay a professional shop, one with a good reputation to do this, you will also get a nice parts and labor guarantee. That way when it fails again, usually in about two weeks with many re-manufactured components, you wont have to do it all over again, all by yourself. It also appears to me like there is very good chance that you may get your hands all dirty doing this. (Next time, turn off the radio!) Thanks again!

Are you joking? This job seems super easy, I'd advise asking someone to change the battery for you, it's probably too difficult.
@legion1a7 жыл бұрын
Norman Hammond, Thank you for comment, if you had not made it I would not know just what an idiot you are! Do you have a reading comprehension problem and you didn't understand these sentences: "If you pay a professional shop, one with a good reputation to do this, you will also get a nice parts and labor guarantee. That way when it fails again, usually in about two weeks with many re-manufactured components, you wont have to do it all over again, all by yourself." You said: " it's probably too difficult." Possibly for you, I am a retired ASE certified Master Technician who dislikes getting his hands dirty now, and I was pointing out the great value of having a guarantee, and helping my fellow mechanics to get some additional work!

You should always consider replacing the tensioner pulley as well, because when an alternator goes bad, the pulley typically fails putting more wear and tear on the other pulleys, causing them to fail as well, so if you just swap out the alternator and put on a new belt with an old tensioner pulley, your alternator could possibly fail again, just looking out for you. Thanks for posting.

The tension pulley is under the motor mount size 14mm deep socket.
@kealohanui8084 жыл бұрын
Amanda Long how do you take off the belt?
@amandalong76554 жыл бұрын
Dani Kealohanui you’ll need to jack up the motor. Put something like a piece of would on top of the disk before you jack it up. You’ll need to place the jack close to where the pulley is located but be very careful, if it’s like mine you’ll have to put it under the oil pan. Once you get it jacked up just enough to release the pressure. Then you’ll take off the bolts to the motor mount. Under that you should see the pulley you’ll need to pull the bolt in the pulley to the front of the car or to your right. That should loosen the belt. The second you do that you need to get the jack out from there and unless you 2 you’ll need to put it back where you had it to take the tire. It’s actually better if you had 2 one for each side it will help you to get under there better. If you have any other questions you can email me directly unsteady81@gmail.com send pictures of what you’re working with.

you don’t have to mess with that at all to replace the belt or just take it off to replace the alternator. you just relieve tension by turning bolt towards the cabin of vehicle and then you can slip the belt off and from there it can be moved out of the way or removed completely.
@amandalong76554 жыл бұрын
I did . And my car wouldn’t come lose enough to get the alternator out. So for me I had no choice but to do it. I was just trying to help the guy who commented above.

@@amandalong7655 I rotated the belt tentioner nut (in the counterclock direction to release it) with a long 14 mm wrench (from the wheel well side), then fixed it in the rotated position with another big wrench, put a belt on the top (on AC), checked everything, slowly released the tentioner. It would be way easier with the helper, who is pulling from the wheel well on the tentioner, and you adjust the belt from the top. Yes it can be done without removing the upper engine mount (though that way it might be easier). I did it myself.

I have 01 SC1 and just replaced the alternator twice today had to go back to autozone to get another one (both are refurbished) and they both read 12v and disconnected the battery while it was on and car shut off so seems to be the alternator still. Gonna try a new one this time and hope but if that doesn't help then what? Battery is brand new was just replaced this year

When I reinstalled a new alternator for me the hardest part was to attach that upper bolt, because it was very hard to start that bolt. I attached and tightened the lower bolt, the alternator didn't move much around and still it was very and very hard to set it in the position for the topper bolt to start. How did you do it? Did you experience any difficulties? Later I thought maybe I needed to place first a screwdriver threw that hole on the top. Thank you for the informative film.

Hi. Anyone heard of bad alternator causing transmission problems, like not shifting or engaging? Someone told me it could. Car is 96 sw1 1.9. Also car dies upon unplugging battery. Thanks.
@blazeitmichael27135 жыл бұрын
Short of maybe freaking out the computer, no, the alternator wouldn't cause any transmission problems. As for the the car dying when you unplug the battery, of course its going to die. It needs spark to run and without the battery giving it spark, the engine won't run.
@gregbelkiewicz97045 жыл бұрын
yes when the alternator isnt pushing enough volts the transmission computer goes into limp mode and seems like it stays in 3rd gear.

Yes. I have seen a bad alternator cause a NO REVERSE condition on a 1997 SW2 and a 2001 SL2.

How do you remove and replace the belt??
@tricksofthetrade43853 жыл бұрын
Locate the tensioner pully...use a 1/2 inch rachet in the square slot on the tensioner pulls arm...you will either pull up or push down to take the tension off the belt...then slide it off the pulley

@@marcusmosley6637 not really sure, as long as the motor size is the same the repair would be the same.

Just take the electrical clip off, huh? How? That clip is not coming off. How did you take your clip off? In that vein you could really shorten your video by skipping ALL the details and just say, "Take the alternator off."
