No doubt the split was bad for open wheel as a whole, but people lose sight of the great racing that existed in the IRL. It also provided a chance for guys like Stewart, Boat, Ray, Lazier, etc that didn't exist in CART back then. Look at that crowd too! I would seriously encourage all open wheel fans (especially those who weren't born back then) to watch both the old CART and IRL with an open mind and enjoy them both for what they were.

@@jaxonjaxoff3291 Not so. Jeff Ward won at Texas in 02 by beating out Castroneves and Penske and he was old IRL. Airton Dare won against the same competition at Kansas in 2002 and finished a close third at Texas (also finishing ahead of Castroneves). And you can't ignore the fact that when Kenny Brack defected to CART after winning Indy and an IRL title he more than proved he could win against that competition.

The first half was tedious with all the yellows, but the 2nd half was great racing. One of the best races I've seen yet in this series. It was a pleasure to see the whole field pit under green for once. That should be the norm instead of such a rarity. After watching the previous season, I miss Bobby Unser doing commentary. He knew more about car mechanics than any of the other announcers seemed to, and improved the IQ level of the broadcast sometimes.

Its not the number of cylinders. CART used V8s at the time too, its just that they were turbocharged. The IRL was naturally aspirated, hence the noise.
@HK_Productions47
@HK_Productions47 5 жыл бұрын
@Alex Jarvie Starting in the 1997 season the IRL introduced a new engine formula that used a naturally aspirated 4.0 Liter V8 that had a couple key difference from the CART V8's of the same era. At the time CART was running engines that had a rev limit of 15,000 rpm, the IRL's new engines had a rev limit of 10,500 rpm. More important than the rpm's was the differences in crankshafts the the engines used. CART cars as well as high revving engines like Formula 1 and almost all super cars use what's called a 180 degree crankshaft also called a Flatplane Crankshaft, this kind of crankshaft can allow an engine to rev higher but causes excessive vibration. This vibration is fatal to an engine unless the engine has a complex and expensive system of timing and counter weight gears installed. Nascar's and most American muscle cars use a 90 degree crankshaft also called a cross plane crankshaft, this kind of crankshaft is much more balanced and causes no vibration making it significantly cheaper to use, but at a cost of a lower maximum rev limit. The reason the kind of crankshaft that the IRL and CART use is important is because the crankshaft determines the firing order of the pistons in an engine. A V8 with a 180 degree crankshaft is basically 2 inline 4 engines fused together. The firing order of a 180 degree crankshaft V8 ensures that 2 cylinders on each bank of pistons is firing at all times, this ensures that the exhaust note (which is the sound you hear of an engine) is very even and sounds like what a CART car sounds like. A V8 with a 90 degree crankshaft has a very irregular exhaust note which is why a nascar engine sounds so aggressive. A common misconception is that because the engines were naturally aspirated they sounded like NASCAR's, but in actuality both the IRL and ChampCar (The successor to CART) used Naturally aspirated engines from 2004-2011. For further information here are a couple of videos explaining the sound difference between 180 and 90 degree crankshafts Flatplane: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnvVoaCPa6Z8iqc Crossplane: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6iXo6SHeZlqb9E Further info: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYXWpIt8bd6Em80 kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6SYk4aHfraEqbs

But if you want it, there is a lot of CART races here too, the last was the grand prix of surfers paradise from 2006.
