I've been a Yankee fan since 1956. Seeing Tony Gwynn for the first time reminds me of what it was like seeing Micky Mantle play for the first time. No team was going to beat them in 1998, but games 1,3 and 4 were all close. Let's not forget that the Padres had to beat Maddux, Smoltz, and Glavine to get to the World Series. Hats off to them for that.

What a ride ..when ken burns baseball first cameout and billy crystal used to talk about the 50s yankees how awesome that was...well we got atleast a lil taste of somethung like that in the late 90s..now approaching 40 and they havent been back in so long..i get it now mr crystal..u gotta cherish tjose moments in time..they dont come often..what fun it was 4 in 5 yrs and 3 in a row..no ones won two in row since..

1:23 that intro song is incredibly powerful. It has enough sorrow and heartbreak to carry a documentary on the aftermath of 9-11. Yet they still use it here to highlight the high points of the greatest baseball team of modern times. Go figure. Anyone know the name of the song? For bonus points I know NFL Films used it for their NFL's Greatest Moments video when describing the plight of Rocky Bleier who was drafted to go to Vietnam and was badly wounded and told he could never play football again. Bleier was devastated but refused to listen to the docs, rehabbed and returned triumphantly to the Steelers and carved out a decent career as a backup RB to Franco Harris. It helped that Bleier tells a good inspirational narrative himself to back up the music.

Actually, the Yankees didn’t have the highest payroll in 1998. The yankee payroll really started to jump after 2001 when they got guys like Giambi, ARod, Sheffield, bringing Clemens back.

Outside of game 2, this was a pretty decent WS. Games 1-3-4 were up in the air through the 7th inning stretch.

This is true. As a Yankee fan, I felt like game 2 was fun to watch though. You had homers from Bernie and Posada and a great catch from O'Neill. Game 4 was close but still a pretty dull affair. All the runs scored were on ugly, awkward plays. I think the only really cool part of that game other than celebrating a 125 win season was Mariano retiring Jim Leyritz with the bases loaded in the 8th. Leyritz was so clutch those playoffs for SD.

This WS sweep was moreso like 2005 (4 games, but the other team had its moments) than 2012 (Tigers didn't lead until game 4- at least SD can say they led TWICE)

No matter what happens tonight, here's hoping that this season will set the stage for something like 1998. If Sanchez improves defensively and Judge proves that this season is no fluke as well as Clint Frazier panning out, it can help. They should add some good bullpen arms just in case.

This 1998 Yankees was by far the greatest baseball TEAM, emphasizing the word team due to the fact that not one member of that team lead the league in any offensive category. Yet, they won 114 games while beginning the season 1-4. Put this in perspective please, this team won a total of 125 wins and lost just 50 games... Think about that stat...This '98 team lost just 50 games(only 48 in the regular season)... l doubt any one will ever see that again in their lifetime. Remember you must win the World Series after winning 114 or more (sorry M's)... BTW, my son was born the moment the Yanks clinched that Works Series... l named him Michael, but l was told l should have named him Scott.

Oldskool, I think I tried to reply to your comment when you posted it but when I saw the reply button was not appearing on your posts for whatever reason, I gave up rather than just post here. But since you miss me so much I might as well throw in some thoughts. Braves curse?? nah. That one title in 95 makes them curse free, as frustrating as the rest of that run must have been. I feel your pain though. The Yankees signed Randy Johnson in 2005 and look how that went. The Yankees also got Lofton in 04 and he fell flat on his face. I loved Kenny as an Indian and it was sad to me to see how his career ended. The thing that really stuck out to me with Lofton though was in the 2007 ALCS Game 7 in Boston. The Indians trailed 3-2 in the 7th. Lofton was on 2nd with 2 outs and decided to hold up at 3rd on a single. He clearly would have/should have scored and in his younger, fast-as-lightning days, forget it. The Indians did not score and never tied the game. The Red Sox lit up the Indians in the 7th and 8th and turned the finale into a rout, but I can't help but think if Cleveland had tied the game, everything would have changed in that game 7. No one seems to remember this though, it really could be up there with The Drive and The Fumble and Jordan over Ehlo, Renteria off Nagy, the Decision, etc. That 99 ALDS though, O'Leary's contribution usually gets overlooked, I'm glad you brought it up. Everyone remembers it as the Pedro game, meanwhile this dude gets 7 RBI's on 2 jacks, including the game winner. Tough break for a guy who didn't exactly have a lot of other defining moments. I would have loved to see what the Indians would have done against the Yanks in 99...wait, no I don't. Boston really was not a worthy opponent that year, they had no shot. But the Indians? That would have been scary competitive, much like the 97 and 98 Yankees-Indians series were. They would have met 3 years in a row in the playoffs and the Yankees-Indians rivalry would have become a thing, which it never really did. I know the 99 Yanks were relatively untested in their playoff run and I think the Indians being stunned by Boston in the ALDS is the main reason why. Also, don't forget, in 1996 the Indians were upset by the Orioles in 4 games. And Roberto Alomar, who was not suspended from the playoffs the way most felt he should, for spitting at umpire John Hirschbeck, had the winning hit in extra innings in game 4. Had the 96 Yanks played the Indians in the ALCS, who knows, maybe there's no dynasty to begin with. I know the 96 Yanks played Cleveland very well that season but I believed the Indians were the better team that year and we were very lucky to have avoided them. I forgot about the Sterling Hitchcock phenomenon that year because I remember being so stunned at what another ex-Yankee was doing with the Padres. Remember Jim Leyritz crazy string of playoff homeruns with the Padres that year? I was very proud the Yanks kept him silent in that World Series, including a game 4 8th inning bases loaded at bat where Rivera got him to fly out on a can o' corn to center field.

I wanted to see the Nats advance, and when I saw they weren't going to, I wanted a Dodgers-Giants NLCS just because. But Giants-Cardinals, I feel like I've seen both of these teams too many times and I'm getting tired of hearing about the underrated scrappy players featured on both teams winning in October while all the big stars choke. It's getting old.

billny33 When the playoffs started, I predicted that the Giants would be in the World Series, mainly because of who their manager is, especially compared to the rest of the managers in the NL. Don Mattingly is terrible, Mike Matheny is only marginally better, and Matt Williams was a rookie. And managers and coaches really do matter when the post-season comes calling, and the Giants have the best in Bruce Bochy, the same Bruce Bochy that led the Padres to this World Series in 1998 by defeating two 100+ win teams in the playoffs in '98, including going unbeaten in Atlanta in the NLCS. So by that alone, I had the Giants in the World Series, and I thought the Royals would be there, too. However, in all the years I've watched the World Series, this year's version may have been one of the worst I've ever seen, simply because there were so many blowouts by both teams, and not enough firepower on either side to overcome any kid of a deficit.

***** Well the Giants did overcome that 4-1 deficit in game 4, that was a big turning point in the series because it looked like the Royals were going to go up 3-1. Unfortunately the Giants then turned that game into a really ugly blowout and took all the excitement out of the late innings. I know only games 3 and 7 were really close unless you count game 2 which was close for 6 innings. But to have a good game 7 is really tremendous so I can't rank this as one of the bad World Series. I thought 2007 was one of the worst WS I had ever seen although it seems clear to me that 1989 was quite possibly the worst World Series of my lifetime. In addition to the quake, the Giants (much like the 07 Rockies) never even held a lead. And yet it still gets so many views on my page.

The 1989 World Series probably gets a lot of views because of the earthquake, because it certainly wasn't a good series. In fact, none of those World Series that those A's teams were in were very good, as none went past five games, and other than the earthquake, there wasn't anything worth noting about that World Series. In fact, that World Series marked only the third time that a team never led at any point in any game, with the others being in 1963 and '66. And even though Game 7 of the 2014 World Series was a nail-biter that the Giants tried to blow at the end, the 2014 World Series, as a whole, was a terrible World Series. In fact, none of the last three World Series were very good at all. 2012 was a sweep that was effectively decided in the first game and 2013 was dismal, as well. And as for the Giants coming back from that 4-1 deficit in Game 4, that was all on Ned Yost, who completely blew that game in the sixth and seventh innings.

I'm not sure how the Braves lost to those Padres but I don't think we would have beaten the Yankees anyway considering that we were swept by them in 1999. Maybe we don't get swept because we had a lot of injuries in '99 but we still wouldn't have gone more than five or six games in all likelihood. Atlanta's true title window was 1991-1997, with the '91 WS and '96 WS being the biggest missed opportunities.

You are correct in your suspicions. Ken Caminiti admitted to steroid use long before the Mitchell Report came out in 2007. In fact, he died very young and I believe the steroid use had a lot to do with it so yes, he was a cautionary tale.
