I attended Game 1 of the 1988 World Series. Reserve level, last section in RF, halfway up....my brother and I in the commerative white t-shirts given out to kids under 14 at the game....I was 11....a few years ago I finally found the footage of the whole game, and sure enough, I saw my brother and I on the TV footage. I shall never forget it.

The A's came into this series overconfident. They thought it was their's when the Dodgers took out the 100-win Mets. But the Dodgers out-pitched them, and were more clutch in the big moments. And the same thing happened 2 years later, against the Reds

Game 1 vs the A's, I remember Canseco knocked the ever loving crap outta that ball - It left a DENT in the center field camera that it hit. After that at the end, though... Close the book Nothing tops that. I will never forger that, just about to leave when Davis drew the walk, and heard Scully on the radios everyone had on, saying "look who" and and the place. went. NUTS... It was like a fairy tale. Unreal. I think if I could go back for a vacation in time, 1988 would be a fine year to visit again...

The '88 Dodgers were phenomenal. If I was to pick an MVP - it would be Dodger announcer, Vin Scully. We in Southern California were so blessed to have our friend, Vinny, calling the play-by-play for over half a century! Except for the player names, you really can't tell a 1959 broadcast from a 2016 one. Vinny's voice and his enthusiasm for baseball never changed through the years. Vin began his career as a young announcer for the Brooklyn Dodgers! LA loves you, Vinny!!

I lived in England at the time, and 1988 was my first year of Baseball fandom. This was on a Channel Four video called the best of Baseball. The first 15 minutes of said VHS video was an explanation of the basic rules of the game. Then this NBC highlights package with the excellent Bob Costas, and the imperious duo of Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola. I watched it and rewatched many times. Happy times and great memories.

For all we hear about game 1, I truly thought the series was still up for grabs going into game 4. The home team won the first 3 games of that WS, and the prior 2 years, the team that was down 0-2 got back in the series (1986 Mets, 1987 Cardinals) They had a chance to tie the series. Being tied 2-2 instead of down 3-1 against Orel is a big difference. When they blew game 4 at home with Dave Stewart against Not Orel Hershiser, that was pretty much it. I also wonder if the series might have gone differently if OAK had the home-field advantage. This was back when HFA alternated between leagues- who knows how that series plays out if game 1 is at the Oakland Coliseum.

Exactly...Game 4 is the one I remember more than Game 1. The A's established themselves as LOBsters long before the Moneyball Era. SO MANY CHANCES to win that game. It really should've been 3-2 going back to LA.

The Dodgers were probably the 3rd best team in 1988, but they played the best in the playoffs. In 2017, they did not play their best, but were arguably the best team. You win when you play the best in the playoffs. They'll have to regroup next year and play even better next year to get the result they want.
@billny33
@billny33 6 жыл бұрын
Jason Lee I would argue the Dodgers were the most dominant team in both the LDS and LCS rounds. They still looked like the regular season version of themselves. Because Houston struggled against the Yankees, a young wild card team with no playoff experience, I didn't see how they could beat the Dodgers. I think it was just a great WS upset. It was only for that series that the Dodgers did not seem to be themselves.

billny33 A chance to win it all. Regan, 29 yrs ago, said when a team who won 104 winning games and lost can come back and win it all. As did in 1989 when they won 99 games and won. We can see the same thing to the Dodgers this year, I guess.

Kirk Gibson More than deservedly won the 1988 National League MVP Award as he was The Key to the Los Angeles Dodgers 1988 World Series Championship! All of this would have not been possible had it not been for Jesse Orosco filling up Kirk Gibson’s Cap with Eye Black. Pissed Gibson off to High Heaven, but it showed the Dodgers what he was all about as they all took wing and started playing at a new level in 1988.

After this year, as a Dodger fan, I kind of lost interest in baseball.. I felt like I had seen everything worth seeing already. Best. Year. Ever. Some of these moments still give me goosebumps. Helluva season, that was.... from start to finish, it was like a movie . Major League and the '88 Dodger Season make me almost equally happy to watch. Mickey Hatcher was probably one of my all time favorites. I just realized he is the reason I named the dog "Mickey" - wasn't sure where that came from at the time I named him, but watching that enthusiastic right field dive , I recognize the inspiration at last. Perfect naame for a dog who is obsessed with playing ball - always with that same energy and joy....

I didn't even know who Jack Buck was at the time, but what a moment! Watching it as a Dodgers fan growing up and hearing those words. "This is gonna be a home run! Unbelievable! @ 14:36... In a pitching rich 1988 season in the NL where Tony Gwynn won the NL batting title with a .313 average... Kirk Gibson was the 1988 NL MVP... with only 76 RBI. I am not a Mets fan when I give the next opinion. I think Darryl Strawberry should have won the NL MVP. He hit .269 with 39 HR 101 RBI 101 runs 29 steals and led the league with a .545 slugging pct. The Mets won their division with 100 wins.

The reason Gibson was chosen MVP was because of his leadership and the things he did to win games and single-handedly will the Dodgers into the post season and beyond. He had 18 go ahead base hits, would get on base, steal bases, score go ahead runs, make a great catch or throw to nail a runner. Without him the Dodgers go nowhere. That's why he won it. The Mets had other good hitters, the Dodgers not really.

A Mets vs athletics series would have gone more then 5 games probably. But think of all The magic that would not have Happened. The ‘88 dodgers were a team of destiny. They really were kinda magical. All these guys stepped up for each other. They all made plays. They all contributed. And the great Tommy Lasorda out coached the great tony Larussa, which is not a easy task. I’m really not sure if the dodgers win that series if Gibson doesn’t hit that homerun.. it absolutely sparked that team, it gave them the momentum and I think it really made them think that they would do it. They never Gave the momentum back. The dodgers came out and hit the a”s right in the mouth and they never recovered.
