It amazes me that people were able to get to their cars and turn on their headlights for us in just a few minutes. Such great, loyal, and thoughtful supporters we had that night!

You're watching this because drum corps can play in the dark but professional football players can't.

I was there. I still remember it today. Nobody knew at first what was going on. Some thought it was part of the show. Then you can see the staff try to light up the front part of the field. But the corp just kept going. The crowd just went NUTS...

Putting the old saying "You should be able to march this show with your eyes closed!" to an extreme test.

It's a mindset. You go out and do everything in your life as a champion. Doesn't matter what it is. At the end of the day/season are you going to say "if only I practiced a little harder" or are you going to say "there was absolutely NOTHING I could have done more than what I already did?" It's a lesson that isn't about drum corps, it's about life. If you apply it to corps, you can apply it to everything you do. Even if you don't walk away with a ring, you are going to walk away being successful

I'm grateful for this upload and I'm glad I got to hear this performance. The principal soprano bugle screamer sounded better this night than he did on any other recording out there of the remainder of this season. He was pretty much spot on with the double high Cs here. The rest of the season, he usually played double high Cs under pitch, lipping up the pitch of the B natural harmonic below double C rather than actually playing on the double high C harmonic. 5:18 was his strongest double high C of this show and of this season.

The same reason the corps kept marching and the guard kept spinning and tossing. The same reason that every single member cares about attention to detail with their individual posture and movement. It's a way of thinking and what we are taught "To be a Champion you must do EVERYTHING in life like a champion, eat, sleep, shit, practice and perform like a Champion. Do everything like 30k people are watching just you". It's a big reason why the corps is so successful & has won more than anyone else

now just imagine, how much better could YOU be as an individual and person if you applied that mindset to EVERYTHING you did in life? Now imagine what it would be like if every member in your corps did the same thing. There would be NOTHING stopping you from achieving your goals and being successful. This is why BD wins and is so successful. It is a mindset the members have about winning.. not "to win DCI" but to live their life with the attitude of a champion, and that they WILL win.

I marched in a Corps style high school marching band. I think these 15-16 year olds that are saying "we've played in the dark and it was easy" don't realize back in 94, there are no street lights on every corner. Did you know if you shut the lights off at a football field (which I have done a couple times after night rehearsals) you can't see anything. I think these people played under street lights at least and don't realize. When you walk your neighborhood at night, you only think you see well in the night because of street lights
@ez830810 жыл бұрын
True, but this was in 99.. the power to the entire city went out so there was no residual light anywhere.

My school was performing at a football game and the school the football team was playing was having the “blackout” student section theme. No one in the schools cares much about the band (even though we are the only somewhat good thing our school has) and they turned out the lights in the middle of the bands performance. My friend was in Guard at the time, the band just kept going! Show never stops

@SHOTiRiGHTi 1. This was about 9:30 and pitch black, yes you see city lights in the background, but there was nothing behind the front sideline after the stadium. 2. This was a performance 3. This was the first performance of the year. 4. This is not high school band 5. If your high school band is practicing in complete darkness on purpose, it wasting it's time, putting its members at risk, has poor time management and probably not very good.

@VerySnowy no.. we pretty much couldn't see much the entire time. The only time it really adjust was once the power came back on, not long after the show was finished... but yes, your eyes do adjust however we were half way through the show when the lights were out.. there was only a couple minutes left, not really time to adjust.
