Disassembly of a 1999 Jeep NP247 J Transfer Case. Trying to determine the cause of the whining noise. Probably due to bad ball bearings, but never really found the "smoking gun".

Thank you for taking the time to make this in-depth video! I learned a ton and look forward to watching your other vids on this transfer case.

Nice job with this thoroughly detailed breakdown. @ 42:22 you may have found part of the problem with the excess silicone in the oil passageway, limiting oil flow, as well as the low fluid that you mentioned in the beginning, and having the wrong fluid type. I would certainly replace all bearings while it's open. Again, nice job!

thats wat my dana 35 in my 96 jeep grand cherokee sounded like when the gears were using the wrong diff fluid. lucas ruined my dana35. i needed mopar diff fluid thats clear. i took out my driveshaft and axles and put hudge bolts and nuts and a couple thick grade 8 washer on the back of the wheel bearings so they wouldnt seperate and brake off my brake calipers as well. sounds great now. most the time a transfer case like my 249j just uses transmission fluid. i bet sombody used gear oil in there in yurs.

In lieu of the Mopar NV247 synthetic transfer case fluid, I have been using Amsoil Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid for years in both my 2004 Jeep NV247 Case and in the transfer case of my 09 Silverado. The Silverado transfer case (similar but electronically controlled) developed a loud moaning sound at about 60,000km with the recommended Dexron VI. The dexron was black with clutch particles, so I flushed it three times until clear with more dexron VI and then changed it out for the Amsoil MTF and it's been quiet for the last 180,000km. I changed it once at about 150,000km and it was only slightly dark. On the Jeep at over 300,000km, I changed the Amsoil once, but it came out looking like new oil.

We have a old ZJ with the 249 case, has about 185,000 miles, changed the case fluid 4 four years ago with atf ➕ 4 which we mixed with 25% Lucas oil stabilizer, and it works excellent and does not make any noise. I would say that case you have is most likely noisy because it was operated without fluid in it. Or very low on fluid

One thing I didn't see in the beginning of the video is mentioning the possibility of low front differential fluid. That will cause a roaring noise.

The Mopar fluid is a requirement for the Quadra Drive systems. The Selec-trac only requires ATF+4

Mopar fluid is a requirement for NV247/249, not for QuadraDrive particularly. QuadraTrac was also using NV247.

Well....I am a Mechanic and a Mechanical Engineer to boot, (Mechanical Engineers should ALWAYS be Mechanic, bye the way), and You could have fooled me. I see you as a Mechanic, and you should go ahead and drop that disclaimer. Good job Jim.

Do you have to add the MOpar Limited slip 4oz bottle of fluid to the Mopar Transfer case oil, or does the Mopar Transfer case oil already have the additives in it?

I`ve got the same problem with 247 transfer case noise. Noise dissapered through the front cardan shaft removing. So i've replaced front wheel shaft bearing just like you in this video, but the noise level didn't change. I guess that reason is the front shaft needle bearing. Have you ever had problems with needle bearings on 240`s transfer cases? I heard that likelihood of needle bearing breaking is too low and small quantity of people are faced with it. And thank you very much for your videos, It`s hard to find such detailed information about american cars of 90-x and 00-x repairing, especially in the Russian internet space

It might not be the transfer case. It could be the front differential. It would probably be a good idea to check the front differential oil level. Also, with the 247 or 249 transfer cases. You must use all the same tires. If one is a different brand,it might be a little bigger or a little smaller than the the others. They will rotate at different speeds and cause alot of wear to the transfer case and/or the differential(s).

Excellent videos!! I have the same t-case. My 4H is not working. It runs only the back axle. 4L works fine. Any ideas what is causing it before I tear it apart to try to figure it out? The correct mopar oil is in it.
