Thanks for coming out and (now) reviewing all my Saturns! And for everyone; if you're in the midwest, come to our May 24th 2025 Saturn Nationals show!

I’m going to say something I thought would never come out of my mouth. That saturn has aged really well, and the looks are actually more appealing to me now than they were when they came out

Exactly how I feel. I thought they were uncool when they came out. Now I’d absolutely love one. And it looks great.

i walk past a manual sc2 on the way to the train every day, nothing embodies the daily drivers of the early-2000s more than these cars. they're beautiful, in a slightly quirky way (as expected from saturn) i'd love to own one as a beater lol

I was working at a dealership that had Saturn and saw the fall of Saturn Saab and Isuzu. Great Review
@drewzero12 ай бұрын
I had a Saturn and a Mercury for years and still have my SAAB. Always joked that I needed a Pontiac and an Oldsmobile to round out the extinct club... Guess maybe I need an Isuzu too!

Great review, Zack. Being this is my son's car, I have driven it a lot and I agree that it's so much fun to drive. When I bought an SW2 new in '97, I regret that I didn't get a manual one.

I always thought our first-gen looked like a spaceship. It had a chunky shuttle-like vibe to it, and the backwards-raked instrument cluster looked kind of scifi to me.

I had a 2000 Saturn SL (no number) these are the most base entry level car. You either get A/C or power steering; not both. Mine had A/C. It was a great, reliable little fuel efficient commuter. But the lack of power steering did compel me to get something else after a couple of years.
@eddiefalcon83162 ай бұрын
So they were not available with both?
@dustinkauffman58682 ай бұрын
I had an 02 SL "sport"- It had power steering and a/c- SL2 interior.. 5 speed manual but the single cam engine with all 100 hp 😅. Was easy to learn manual on and fun to drive.
@alexbellotti84232 ай бұрын
The SL1 and SL2 did come with both a/c and power steering. Mine was just an SL. No number. The most basic entry level model SL

I was looking hard for a good one of these for over a year (with a manual)...eventually gave up. Now I drive a 98 5 speed Sentra....has been amazingly reliable on cross state trips over 50 times in the past year.

I owned 3 manual S series cars, great cars for the money. Small things go wrong but the powertrains are solid! I miss the simplicity and cost of maintenance.

I learned how to drive in an 02 SL2 automatic, then about 15 years later bought an 02 SL1 5 speed and taught myself how to drive a stick.
@rustyshackleford16872 ай бұрын
I own an 01' SL2 5-Speed and you're absolutely right. I was really surprised how fun it is to drive with that powertrain. It's probably the best shifter I've had after my '14 Mazda3 6-Speed and it's zippy enough to keep up with modern traffic, no problem.

When GM was selling these. Saturn was doing great you had simple choices. Either automatic or stick sedan or wagon then later coupe or SL1 SL2. That was it at very competitive pricing. It's only when they tried to change the formula and make Saturn another GM brand they started to struggle.
@Aran.Tech.Television2 ай бұрын
Yep, the whole point was "a different kind of car company", GM ruined that.

I would have to disagree with you on the looks. I think the first-gen Saturns looked awesome (especially the SC2 with pop-up headlights). The second gen got a little "bloated" looking. Growing up I learned to drive stick on my mom's SL1. That thing never had an issue until the clutch went out at 187k miles.
@drewzero12 ай бұрын
As a former first-gen SW2 owner, I concur. The first gen had a very coherent design, some echoes of the 80s with their hard lines and corners, but surprisingly beautiful for what they were. For the second generation GM busted out the sanding block and made everything way too blobby, which in my biased opinion hasn't aged as well. (Ours broke the odometer gear at 164k two owners before us, and we estimate it must have had at least 250k on it by the time we gave it away.)
@owenauto2 ай бұрын
I grew up in the back of a burgundy one in the early 00’s. Unfortunately my parents decided to scrap it when the clutch blew and the frame got rusty in 2012.
@bwofficial17762 ай бұрын
My neighbors across the street had one of these in blue, along with a base model blue Mitsubishi Lancer. I haven't seen a Saturn wagon since they got rid of it. This design aged fairly well. Saturn lost the plot when GM started badge engineering just like they did with Saab. The window switches are in the middle because Saturn dabbled with right hand drive for the postal service and export markets.

I wish I could've had you review our '94 SW2. It was the first generation, so there were a lot of differences from this one, and it was the last year for automatic seat belts. 💔

I had a 99 SW2 with a stick back in 2012. Loved that car until my stupid back and leg told me my days of enjoying low sitting position cars especially with manual gearboxes is no longer for me.
@drewzero12 ай бұрын
I can't imagine driving stick in a Saturn. Our 94 SW2 had little enough legroom without adding an extra pedal. That's probably the biggest gripe I had with the car besides the fact that people in huge pickups never seemed to be able to see it.

Saturn was such a squandered opportunity for General motors. When they first came out they were truly special and they were as good as the import competition. The problem is in typical GM fashion they sat on it didn't improve it and their competition continue to evolve and get better. Then GM corporatized Saturn and ruined it. Saturn was GM's opportunity to be mentioned in the same breath as companies like Toyota or Mazda or Honda. Instead, they went from being the world's greatest automaker to being a laughing stock.
@drewzero12 ай бұрын
So true. I owned a 94 Saturn for a long time and loved how it felt much more like my '90 Camry than my friends' Cavaliers and Corsica. The Saturn never felt like a cheap car, just a small and basic car. A good little car, something GM otherwise never seemed to be able to get right.

It's sad what happened to Saturn. In the end, GM mismanaged Saturn. Saturn were never supposed to be rebadged Chevy, Pontiac or Buicks. After GM's 2009 bankruptcy, they shut down Saturn along with their other car brands. GM doesn't want to make small cars and sedans. They only want to make big expensive SUVs and trucks because those make higher profits than sedans. So, they didn't want to invest in Saturn anymore. When Saturn started they were just as reliable as Toyota and Honda, but as the 2000s went on they went downhill

"fast" auto cars are so boring , feeling the power between the gears is where its at. the base model would also have manual sterring i bet the twin cam has different gearing too.
