These vans were tough as nails. I had a 97 model, picked it up for $1200 way back in 2004 for my delivery van. On a route my oil pressure dropped to zero, drove it an additional 6 hours without oil pressure. Figured I would run till failure, but it made it home. Will never forget the metal-on-metal noise. Dropped the oil pan over the weekend and found the oil pump laying in the pan, both bolts backed completely out. Put a new oil pump in and it ran another 50k miles when it was totaled in a wreck. True story, although I wish it had the manual transmission.

The Aerostar was based on the Ranger chassis, that's why it was truck like in ride quality. The competition was based on uni-body car designs. The Aerostar had a higher tow rating and parts commonality with the Ranger and F-150 of it's time. I loved mine. Unfortunately it was totaled out by deer.

"This was something you would buy if you needed to move a lot of people a lot of the time." I drove these in college working for the campus shuttle. We had them because we were run by Campus Police, so of course they bought Fords. They were very much of their time and a heavy duty minivan, with one major exception. The inside sliding door handles broke regularly. That little sliding window was useful so the passengers could get out. We kept a box of spare handles and I got to replace at least one a week. Oh, and the backlight would burn out out the radio. It still worked, but without a flashlight you couldn't see what station they were on. Eventually we shifted to Caravans which got better fuel economy and didn't have the handle problem. Thanks for the memories!

This car was supposed to be discontinued/replaced for the 1995 model year by the front wheel drive Windstar. But the Aerostar was a Big Time fave among the Building/Construction trades for its rear wheel drive and towing capacity.😎So Ford did the right thing and kept building it until federal safety standards for the '98 model year woulda required a multi-million dollar redesign of the Aerostar. 1997 was the Aerostar's final year.😟

It was cast in Ford's Cleveland foundry, and assembled in Lima Ohio. The 4.0 V6 was completely different. Available in the Aerostar, Ranger, and Explorer in North America it was built in Cologne, Germany, and traces it's roots back to the 2.9, 2.8, and 2.6 and 2.4L V6 engines available in the Ford Cortina, Capri, Granada, Sierra, and Taunus models in Europe (also massaged by Cosworth in the UK) in the 70s and 80s, as well as Mustang II, Bobcat, Pinto, etc. in North America.

But as you know from seeing the mid '90s Dodge Caravans... no windows at all that open in the back. Or they do, but they only vent. It's like a hot box o'death if the air conditioning goes out. And if you have kids who play with the windows, it's important to always check to make sure those are closed when you leave it for the night. We live in the NW, and my kids left those things open without my knowing. It started raining a lot, and we barely used that thing. One day I opened the door to hear monkey screeching and there were literal mushrooms growing inside. I think 1992 may have been one of the first years for climate control for passengers.
