PlayStation 2 is almost 20 years old. It's very strange. So long ago, yet I still vividly remember getting the console from my mother in November of 2002 as an early birthday present. My parents are no longer alive, but the console she gave me is still in my possession and working. It's always there for me, as well as the games I enjoyed on the system : Devil May Cry, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Onimusha: Warlords, Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Grand Theft Auto III, Final Fantasy X, Tekken Tag Tournament, Shadow of Memories, Virtua Fighter 4, Red Faction, Moto GP, WRC: World Rally Championship, Dark Cloud, AirBlade, Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil, Dropship: United Peace Force, Armored Core 2 and many, many more games that released later in the system's lifespan... all the way up to Pro Evolution Soccer 2014, the console's last game. :)

@maximillionroivas38934 жыл бұрын
@@AksamRafiz I'm 35 now. And what do I think of the current industry? I think that it's sad that traditional gaming is almost dead in this new age of digital distribution. There was a good long time when console gaming was special because each company put out games that could only be experienced on their console(s). Now...exclusivity is almost dead as well and consoles don't mean what they once were. I don't think that consoles will be here much longer. I think the Series X will be Microsoft's final console, as their next XBox will be a digital App for all devices. XCloud is Microsoft's future. And that is the next XBox after the Series X. As for Sony, I think they are slowly but surely following Microsoft and will soon jump on the cloud gaming bandwagon soon and abandon traditional gaming. I think Nintendo will keep tradition alive for another generation or two before they too will follow suit. The new generation of gamers missed out on the golden era of gaming, but I think that gaming in this day and age can still yield memorable moments and experiences. Just different from what we had, though.

Ya im a huge fan of emulation and pushed PCX2 pretty hard on my 980ti and 1440p monitor back in the day. But, i just picked up a Fat ps2 from the thrift store (with the intention of selling it) and im telling you there is some magic to those blurry, smeary, fuzzy, ps2 graphics on a 4:3 monitor or crt. Not to mention just seeing the console and using the official ps2 controller. Its like going back in time. Im gonna load all the iso's on a micro sd card so i don't burn out its optical drive and party like its 2000 on original hardware. It was cool to take it all apart and service it too. Plus PCSX2 is missing some effects and cant play everything 100% accurate. I used to not care and play with any old controller when using the emu but its just not the same.

@darkone18034 жыл бұрын
Li TT per object motion blur is fine at any resolution, it helps give things like say the bolt a rifle moving a proper sense of motion, bullet casings being eject, bullet traces or helicopter and plane propellers spinning at very high RPMS, people need to stop following this trend that all motion blur is bad, if you want to say camera motion blur where the screen blurs when you move your head, I'll agree in most cases it's not needed unless the game is running at 60-120fps+.
@SaturnJap4 жыл бұрын
@@aninfinitemindofmusicandreams Actually chromatic aberration is used since many years in photography as filter to give a sense of chromatic stereoscopic depth to the picture simply increasing or/and reducing red and green on one of either x and y axys offsets. In short pretty much what anaglyph glasses did with the early 3D. Unfortunately it's very rarely applied to games in a proper way, and I'm not mad about the effect, but when it's done well it can give anxiety vibes to the mood of the game, especially when drama or horror, e.g. dreaming, remembering or under drugs effects situations. The filter for retro look you're talking about is crt scanlines emulation.
@SaturnJap4 жыл бұрын
I really liked and still like MGS1 motion blur and in that case it was used on Ps1 to produce various effects and not as antialiasing. Talking about AA: GT3 motion blur is very well made and implemented, apparently it works in a circular way and jaggies are quite reduced, while I will never understand the pixelated effect they applied to GT4 instead, which weirdly works the other way around. There are, nonetheless, many Ps2 games that abused of blur with the result of having a lot of ghosting on screen, which I really couldn't stand and still. There were other software resources to antialias the Ps2 picture, e.g. in Tekken Tag Tournament (western versions only) in which an effective antialiasing (a simple one, of course) was emulated through an apposite routine. Someone says that it's just an anti-flicker filter, but I'm sure that it's more than that, because all the polygons edges are clearly smoothed compared to the japanese version (that has also a lot of flickering), and a mere flicker filter can only "freeze" the shimmering of the screen, but the jaggies would stay there, freezed, but there.

And ps3 to ps4 is almost the same but with few extra details like better draw distances, better fps and more detailed textures or anti aliasing. Video game technology is advancing slower and slower. Just check how crazy changes were from 1990 Sega genesis period to 2000 dreamcast. And now 2010 ps3 to 2020 ps4.

Rendering in huge worlds is also a constraint. The PS5 is supposed to have a 4x better processor than PS4, and a SSD built in so hopefully PS5 should perform.
@litjellyfish4 жыл бұрын
Kyle Hayes why would rendering a larger world been an issue? If we talk mostly non dynamic geometry that has not been a scaling issue really the last 10 years or so. (yes of course an SDD will allow to stream in more quicker but my questions is more related to the “render” and CPU statement)
@kylehayes64324 жыл бұрын
@@litjellyfish Rendering or image synthesis is the automatic process of generating a photorealistic or non-photorealistic image from a 2D or 3D model (or models in what collectively could be called a scene file) by means of computer programs. Also, the results of displaying such a model can be called a render. you ever play a game like dayz? To be fair it's a 10 year old game.
@litjellyfish4 жыл бұрын
Kyle Hayes I think you miss understood me. I did not ask what a render is. I asked why you saw rendering a huge world a constraint. I then followed by explaining why I found the statement questionable. My statement is that for huge worlds there is plenty good systems in software and hardware already. Occlusion culling and distance based level of detail. So pushing those polygon data sets around for pure rendering is not really a big problem world based. It’s like manage those data set in memory and also to update the dynamic stuff in it. And for this more memory, quicker storage and more powerful CPU is great. But that is just to handle and update the huge worlds. It’s separated more or less totally from the actually render pipeline Hope i am more clear how :)

Meh... I still think it was largely over-hyped and most people bought into the hype like from this video with claims like "Emotion Engine" and "Real-life characters." In reality, the Dreamcast, which came out two years prior had even better graphics in ways as it didn't have to rely on interpolation techniques to render (so it was much clearer/more stable looking). The Dreamcast was also easier to program for, included a modem for online play, had 4 controller slots with visual memory units, had tons of great launch titles, and cost significantly less than the PS2 at launch. The DVD-playback and PS1 backwards compatibility were the two main reasons I and many others still got a PS2 initially but technologically and even games-wise, I would rate PS2 behind the Dreamcast, GameCube, and Xbox. It’s amazing the leap of power we had in 20 years. Imagine the next 20 years it’s going to be fantastic
@thiagovidal61374 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. The growth is not proportional and it's getting smaller and smaller in every generation. Next gen we might not even get an upgrade in resolution. The largest generation leap came from 16 bits (Snes/Genesis ) to 32/64 (PS1/N64)... then to (PS2/GC)... Still, nothing was as major as Super Mario World to Super Mario 64 for example... A Link to the Past to Ocarina of time.. we will never see this leap again. The leap from PS3 to PS4 was the smallest we've ever had and it probably will be even smaller to PS5.
@ChanceB3064 жыл бұрын
Thiago Vidal you’re right I was thinking we will get a breakthrough in the next 20 years. Graphene has always been promised as the next gen material and if we can get it too production it’s might create the leaps in power I’m hoping for.
@thiagovidal61374 жыл бұрын
@@ChanceB306 But also, let's not ignore the potential of raytracing. commonplace in pre -rendered CGI for decades, only now became possible in real time, although limited, it can be what the industry needs in order to make this leap more visible in the next 2 generations, as the system get's more accurate. At least we have one exciting new feature to look forward to for next gen. This can make a big difference... perhaps higher than PS3 to PS4 if done right.
