Its a bit of late actually, Dreamcast was already out a year before that brings that same tech achievement even more (like 480p support) and PS2 a bit of a downgrade with its 240p or 480i output only capability (some exception like GT that support 1080i).

@@bpcgos I agree. DREAMCAST beat PS2 to market by a whole year. I remember seeing Madden 02' on display at Babbages and being like "THIS is the emotion engine?!? It's barely better than Dreamcast!" I was NOT impressed with PS2, it barely edges out Dreamcast. I did get a PS2 in 01' and played the hell outta GTA, but once I got XBox it was game over for PS2. I love all the consoles from that era but Xbox was the one to own, graphical powerhouse plus true online gaming. Such a great time to be a gamer!

I remember being so hyped for the PS2. I read every gaming magazine that I could get my hands on to see screenshots and read all the articles talking about how powerful the system was. It was a great time to be a gamer. The last console I was ever really hyped for was the PS3 but the PS2 hype was the peak.

We got to sit, put in a disc, wait for it to load with sounds and play what was in front of us. That’s all gone. Especially with free to play and subscriptions. Can anyone really remember the ps4 or Xbox one chimes? Now compare to ps2 and ps3 . Ah well. I’m still playing my ps2.

Yes. The generation leap will be getting smaller and smaller. The 2D to 3D was the biggest one. Super Mario World to Super Mario 64 was mind blowing... not only the graphics were 3d but the gameplay and design... we had to learn how to play video games again.

@solidsnake8572

Well, that's pretty obvious. Going from 2D sprites to 3D models was the first big leap and it came before the mid-90's. And the other leap was from N64-PSX-Saturn to, first, Dreamcast and then PS2 and the others. Those were the two biggest leaps in the industry in terms of graphics. Going to 3D was the biggest game-changer in history and achieving human-like bodies and faces in the next generation was what defined all that is to come. Actually you mention PS3, but that wasn't really a leap, just an upgrade. Ever since Dreamcast, everything that has come in these 20 years has been a refinement of that. Just look at games like, for example, Shenmue, MGS2, Final Fantasy X and some others from 2000-2001. They hold really well nowadays only increasing the resolution. However PSX era games don't age well even if you increase resolution to 16k, because the models were very basic, something obvious since it was the beginning of 3D.

New consoles used to revolutionise the industry back in the 90’s - 2000’s. The new capabilities were genuinely mind-blowing. These days new consoles sport ‘faster loading times’ and ‘online capabilities’. Barely exciting, but understandable considering how far technology has come. We’re normalised to consoles now, but back then, new generations posed incomprehensible possibilities and experiences.

@@KingNez89 No offense bro but I think your point of view is guided by technology and mainstream games. Yeah, ps5 obviously is more powerful than the previous ones. But PS1 still to this day have little gems getting translated and popular to more people like Baroque or Aconcagua. PS2 have classics like GTA SA, VCS, LCS, GoW 1 and 2, MGS 2 and 3, DMC 1, Silent Hill 2 and 3 , Dragon quest VIII , FF X, PES 6, etc. And PS3 had great games (and bigger catalogue than ps5 if im not wrong) like GoW 3, Heavy Rain, og The last of us, Uncharted 3, dbz raging blast, MK 2011. I agree that maybe ps5 have more popular exclusive games than the ps3 but the variety and quantity of games of previous consoles is unmatched imo. And from the list of games you gave for ps5 I think most people are just interested in Spiderman 2, ghost of tushima and gow ragnarok more than anything else.

Only true at the level of game output on console in 2001 (not much later, though). The PS1 and PS2 are not even close. However, PS1 and PS2 games were very similar in 2001. There were a few major differences, though. For example, PS2 loaded much faster than PS1 in general. PS2 also had far better save mechanics and far larger storage. But, if we just judge the graphics, the PS2 was far beyond PS1 in 2001. Not endlessly better, but still far beyond it. You have to go to about 2006 to see the true power of the PS2, as you start to get down-ports from Xbox 360 and PS3. The entire game dev landscape had improved, along with controls and games in general. The ones that were capable of going to PS2 without real issues showed just how great the PS2 was over the PS1 and 1990s' consoles. On the other hand, PC and PS2 were very different in about 2002. But, it depends on what you care about most and judge as 'large jumps', and how the average player feels these differences. 2004-2006 was a major turning point in gaming and game dev and more, on PC, Xbox 360, DS, PSP, Wii, and PS3. So much of what we saw here was impossible back in 2001 or so. The largest jump in general was clearly the PS1 between 1994 and 2001. It went from a mostly 2D, small-world, non-analogue stick machine to a fully 3D, fairly large-world, dual stick machine with decent controls and inputs, and far better design overall with very good save mechanics. The most remarkable 6-year period in history. Actual 3D itself was invented around 1993-1996, also, both on PC and console. We also got the really advanced arcade games starting in 1994. We got MMORPGs and related with RuneScape in 2001, and a few others before that. The true first- and third-person shooter genres were also invented around this time, as it required 3D. This is the first time we see a major jump in resolution/pixel count. And, it's maybe the greatest period for IP growth, and was the period of some of the best game mechanics and series of all time (mostly from Japan and America and the UK under Rare, Rockstar, Nintendo, Sony, Naughty Dog, Xbox, Valve, and a few others). (A few other genres were invented at this time, too, among other things, such as the analogue stick.)

But my most memorable and I considered the golden age of gaming generation is the ps1 & n64 eras. The ps1: Tekken 1, Soul Blade, & Ridge Racer is all I needed, but when it came to the n64 my first ever gaming experience: Super Mario 64, Star Fox, Smash Bros, Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time, Perfect Dark, Donkey Kong, and GoldenEye 64 was the true definition of golden age games.

I remember watching this same video at Gamestop when I'd come in and make payments on my launch day PS2. This is a nice throwback to a simpler, more innocent time when hype had it's full effect on me and micro transactions weren't a thing.

I rememrber playing Gta 3 on ps2 for the first time on both at my friend's house in 2001. It was mind blowing. Then he put in silent hill 2 i was awed. Went home told my mom we need a ps2. We got one a year later.

@Ashitaka0815
@Ashitaka0815 4 жыл бұрын
First it was announced for Dreamcast if I recall it right, then PS2, then Xbox - Itagaki simply wanted the most powerful system he could get at the time. And as much as I appreciate working around hardware limits, it was the better for the game, all team ninja games looked stunning on the og Xbox. Doesn't mean PS2 didn't have good lookers, especially considering the hardware - the lush density of the jungle in MGS3 Subsistence comes to mind or Gran Tourismo 4...

You couldn't be more wrong , 6th and 5th gen games were THE most groundbreaking of any era , there was no greater generational leaps , and It's not nearly as exciting today there's nothing mind blowing or revolutionary anymore merely minor detail Improvements and larger size worlds.

It's fascinating looking back at these. The PS2 games really progressed from this announcement to when the PS3 was released. It does put things into perspective though. Compared to the Dreamcast, only Gran Turismo seems to be a major improvement. Not a dig on the PS2 but it makes me wonder how much more could the Dreamcast have been pushed when compared to the PS2?
