In 1995, Dad and I rented the Japanese Sony Playstation months ahead of its US launch. Along with the Sega Saturn, the Playstation waged 32-Bit console war in my house! This video details that amazing day.

Seriously I was just thinking about how retro-gaming is gotten a lot more popular and seems to be getting more popular by the day people who actually experienced the stuff when it was new are in a weird position because they never knew this stuff is so popular they wish they would have kept their system or recorded stuff but you can't go back it's not very often though that you just happened to buy the buy record everything and have it documented already on accident

I mean nowadays it's more common because those of us who were kids back then more commenly keep up with the modern stuff.

Fantastic video, Tyler! I have been looking forward to this one for a long time. The original Playstation is one of my favorite systems of all time. I didn't own one but my friend had one and I would always be at his house playing games like Crash Bandicoot, 2Xtreme, Twisted Metal, Casper, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, etc. The PSone era is probably my favorite gaming era because there was so much innovation in gaming during that time. Developers were much more willing to take risks with games and there were so many unique games that came out. It was sort of like the WIld West for gaming. When that Playstation startup screen played, you really felt like you were being taken into the future. I still love seeing it; it is so iconic.

PS1 and SNES are where I have most of my gaming memories. Some of the greatest games ever were made on the PS1 and in the US this is when JRPGs were at their height of popularity.

Yeh, great machine and some great games. And there's loads of games, mainly rpgs, that were released on the PS1 in the US but never came out over here in Europe, unfortunately.

Yeah for me too. My 'Trifecta' of 90s consoles were: Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64 and PlayStation. Those 3 consoles have been essentially 80% of my gaming experience through the entire decade. With a honorable mention to the Sega Dreamcast, back in 1999 that thing was WAY ahead of its time.

Dude - this is one of the coolest things I've ever seen! I literally got goosebumps watching this. I grew up in a very, very rural town in northwest Kansas most of my life. Population ~300 people. So most of the people there weren't too tech savvy and a lot of my friends, myself included, weren't too well off financially. My grandma owned a cafe and did OK and she spoiled me rotten, don't get me wrong haha. But that being said, we were among the last people to find out about upcoming new consoles and video games. We would usually find out far after they had been released by either going to a bigger town that had stores with games and consoles or coming across gaming magazines which, for some reason, NONE of us subscribed to any until late in the PS1 era. My friend and I mostly had the n64 and were really happy with that. I didn't get a PS1 until the summer before 8th grade - so summer of 1999. I played a demo disc that had Metal Gear Solid and I was absolutely HOOKED. I worked all summer at my grandma's cafe and she sent me back to my mom's with a bunch of cash so I could buy one. I can't even fathom how many hours I logged on my PS1.... between MGS, many RPGs, Dragon Ball Z import games, etc. What an awesome time that was! I was head over hells in love with Sony at that point. Also, I can't tell you how freaking cool it is that your dad video recorded SO MUCH of your life. I barely have any photos of me, let alone any video footage. Again - small town. Only like 2 of my friend's parents have video cameras and they only used them on super special occasions. Kids today have it so good in that, because of cell phones, so much more of them will have their lives on video or photo to look back on when they're older. I had to subscribe to your channel and very much look forward to seeing more of your videos! Thank you for putting in all of this work to sift through all of those videos, upload them, edit them, etc. to share with us. I can't imagine how much time it took to do but I bet it was super fun for you to do!

Flashback to 1995 pre-ordering my PS1 at the Mall along with my best friend.. Picking it up that Fall and being on the phone with him for like 2 hours as we played the games and the demo disc that came with the system.. We knew video games had officially hit next gen.. He passed away NOT long ago.. I still think about those times..

This video out here making me feel nostalgic about a decade I wasn't even alive during haha. Very interesting to look back on being a 2000's kid. I grew up with a PS2, 3, and even 4 technically, but I did get a PS1 a few years ago as well. I don't think many people realize how interesting retro games are to younger people. I love seeing where many popular franchises today began, and seeing actual footage of the time is just another piece of the puzzle in my mind. Very interesting, and even though I wasn't around then, it really makes me wish I was able to experience these moments! But then again, I am still grateful to have all the memories I have with the consoles I grew up with. For reference, the PS4 came out when I was 10, and I got one when I was 12. I still love discovering and playing older games, though. Just wish they weren't so expensive nowadays!

Vidja Gamer give it time, content this great is it's own hype machine. And speaking for myself, I would imagine there's a healthy batch of us MRL fans that didn't care for PGS (these are two very different target audiences, it's only natural) and weren't subscribed and will slowly be trickling in as time goes on and people periodically decide to check on MRL's playlist over on PGS to see what's up (that was the case for me, being subscribed to PGS wasn't really a viable option as I disliked them).
