Not a vintage Derby really.The first two filled the last two places in that year's King George(there was injury excuses for both). That said Dubai Millenium won that year's Jacque Le Marois and QEII and of course went on to win the World Cup. Val Royal won the Breeders Cup Mile and Compton Admiral went on to win the Eclipse. Both Housemaster and Daliapour won G1s in Hong Kong and Daliapour won the Coronation Cup the following year.Salford Express(a Dante winner) ended his career finishing 14th in a Class 6 race at Catterick.

Because he was running in the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly 24 hours after this.

Dubai Millennium was hell on wheels at a mile and 10f but just wasn't a 12f horse. Never should've been in this race. Should've been sent either to the Prix Du Jockey over 10-1/2f or St James's Palace Stakes at a mile instead of to Epsom for the Derby, IMO.

You only get one chance to run in The Derby and if you think you have one good enough to then you take it and I'm not trying to be rude here but it's easy to be wise after the event. I personally feel Frankel would have stayed 12f but we will never know now but we know Sea The Stars stayed because they took their chance to find out when many doubted his stamina due to being sired by a miler. Very few runners line up on the day without the unknown element regarding their ability to stay the trip but if they don't then they can always drop back again afterwards.

I know the Maktoums all thought Dubai Millenium was the best racehorse ever, but his limitations were ruthlessly exposed in this race. I don't think it was a coincidence that Channel 4 Racing, sponsored by Dubai, consistently bumbed up Godolphin horses wherever they ran, so Dubai Millenium was always going to be overhyped, and that's a bit unfair on the horse, because up to a mile and a quarter he was a brilliant racehorse. Andre Fabre, another trainer who at the time didn't have any particularly good mile and a half horses, and who was never frightened of spouting off whenever he felt like it, expressed his opinion that the most important races were mile and a quarter races. That changed of course when he won the Derby.

Not trying to be a dick here as I get the overall point you were making but I don't think that sponsorship deal was in place yet at the time of this Derby and it didn't happen until around 2008. I also don't think it was so much a case of Dubai Millennium being over-hyped and more just that they were going into the unknown when trying the trip for the first time but it wasn't an unreasonable ask consider it had already won the time before at 10f.

You're very probably right, when I read over my comment after I'd posted it, it did sound rather abrasive. Also I totally recognize that DM was a brilliant horse up to a mile and a quarter.
