2024 Honda RC213V MotoGP testing at Mugello Circuit: Launch, Accelerations & Raw 1,000cc V4 Sound!

Here's a video fully focused on the four Honda RC213V prototypes I recorded last week during a test session among some of the 2024 MotoGP teams at Mugello Circuit, in Italy.
The RC213V was introduced in 2012 as a successor to the RC212V model. Rules for 2012 allowed motorcycles up to 1,000 cc in capacity, with a limit of 4 cylinders and a maximum 81mm cylinder bore. It's name has the following meaning:
- RC= Honda's traditional racing prefix for 4-stroke bikes
- 213= third works bike of the 21st century
- V= V engine
Compared to the RC212V, the most significant new design features of the RC213V were its 1000cc displacement and 90° cylinder angle (RC212V's engine was a 75.5° V4). Of course the bike has been developed and modified over the last decade to adapt to the obvious changes in the rules, but as you well know they are currently going through a rather dark period of their motorcycling racing history.
At the moment Honda, together with Yamaha, is placed in the lowest rank of the new MotoGP concessions system, an attempt to help the manufacturers most in need from a performance point of view, stipulated by a ranking depending on the percentage of the possible maximum points each brand has accrued in a determined time frame.
One very beneficial aspect of being in the lowest rank is the possibility to carry out test days with the official riders, limited only by the number of tyres available (which are higher in number than the highest ranked constructors). Other advantages for these teams are the development of the engine, which, unlike the constructors ranked higher, is not frozen, and the possibility to test on an unlimited number of circuits where a World Championship race will be held.
Riders taking part were Repsol Honda’s Joan Mir and Luca Marini and LCR Honda’s Johann Zarco and Takaaki Nakagami. Many aero solutions were tested as well as different exhaust pipes (for what I managed to spot in these scenes), but most likely they have also tried something from a mechanical and setup point of view.

@Shadowboost kind of. But it was them that manipulated the FIM into the 4 stroke 1000cc era, and now they're the bottom of the barrel in the rulebook they helped write. Same with moto3, KTM owns that class now.

Yes. Too bad the MotoGP bikes will sound worse in 2027 by the time they drop their engine cylinder back to what it was used in 2007 to 2011, with 850cc down from 1000cc.

That sound is really something! Thanks for sharing. Remember attending a MotoGP weekend last year. One end of the grass bank I was on was really close to the tarmac. Managed to have a good look at all the three classes. Moto2 sounds the sweetest of all three I felt. The MotoGP bikes sound like a different beast. The words that came to mind were 'All muscle, all grunt'. LCR Hondas especially sounded "rustic" somehow, for lack of a better term. Fantastic machines these...

hoping better result after this test for that team after reading last week rumour about both factories riders are willing to leave the team after what they've tested just painful to read that no big names who want to ride Honda ever again. finishing 40seconds after leader to finish and only both satelite/independent bikes finishing was 💔 to watch. but yeah they need to improve and growing to catch up the european bikes with Yamaha as well.

Well honda (and yamaha) technically could do that in this season. With their concession status their engine development wasn't freezed and allowed to use more engine per season. But building another new bike during season isn't guaranteed always working and causing big budget and logistics problems.

The screamer sound was not used during the 2017 season and lastly 2016.. I prefer the screamer. Now it's like a mix of Ducati and KTM.

I dont about you guys but it seems to me like Taka is riding the bike the way it should be ridden. It just looks like it seems really heavy off the fast turns and corners. Way too heavy, like the aero or the electronics is pulling it down way more than it should giving a lot of grip but less acceleration through the corners. The Starights seems fine. Taka looks so smooth man.
