You should have removed the radiator with the fans still attached. It's easier, faster, you'd have more room and you wouldn't risk hitting the radiator with the engine during removal. But you still did a very good job. I've been removing engines for 40 years.

Well done! A suggestion is to add time markers in your Description to help us go right to the section that we are working on. I will research the 1A head gaskets. I need to know how they are constructed.

Buy Subaru Turbo OEM Multi-Layered Steel Head Gaskets (MLS). The gaskets1A auto sells is a composite which breaks down just like the old ones. Also it is absolutely necessary to have the head surfaced. Fel-Pro gaskets are fine for valve cover gaskets and Spark Plug seals, but it is really important to by OEM Subaru MLS Head gaskets if you don't want to have to do this project again in the near future.
@jessfelty2131
@jessfelty2131 3 жыл бұрын
you mighty be forgetting to consider that the block was not machined. For a mls gasket you need a lower Ra (surface roughness) than a composite. I highly doubt the blocks Ra value would have been suitable for a mls gasket.

Thanks for the super useful video! But for anyone else using this as a DIY tutorial, here’s one thing to note: I would strongly advise against using emery cloth/sandpaper on the engine block head gasket surface. They leave aluminum oxide particles in the engine that can likely shorten its life span quite a bit, and they will also remove metal (you only want to be removing the old gasket material). Instead, first make sure to plug all the ports and holes on either side of the block where the heads go with lint-free rags or those disposable blue shop towels. Go back and forth between using disposable razors to gently scrape the surface, and brake cleaner or acetone on a shop towel to wipe away debris. Just make sure to not gouge the metal on the surface! Keep cleaning until only metal is left

I know nothing about cars and recently I've been trying to learn little by little and I've done stuff on my car I never even thought I'd be capable of, and in comparison are minor no big deal things. I knew mechanics worked hard, but to watch a pro work and so efficiently and with such fluidity is a treat to say the least. Props to all mechanics for their dedication, skill set, knowledge, and know-how. GREAT VIDEO! 😳

This lady did the best performance of changing a head gasket that I have ever seen, man or woman. She was very thorough and explained step by step what she was doing and why she was doing it. The only thing I would improve on it was the reinstallation of the battery and battery hold down. She cleaned the battery posts, and that was great and should be praised, but she didn't put a protectant, like "fluid film" on the posts to prevent future corrosion. The battery hold down also had a lot of corrosion on it and needed to have the corrosion removed and repainted to prevent future corrosion.

Subaru actually did issue an upgraded head gasket that supposedly fixes the common issue with the blowing head gaskets, so it's a good idea to make sure that the kit you're installing is in fact the same material of that of the upgraded head gasket for the boxster engine.

I liked that you called out the size of tool needed for each nut or bolt and called out torque specs.A buddy and I used to flip Subarus and I've done my share of head gaskets... We got out of it because it got to the point of doing them to EVERY car...The weak point of an otherwise great car.I'm sure that there is lots of owners out there that will get alot out of this video. Great video, very helpful and informative. The only issue I have is a commonly misused term when working on Subaru's - aligning the timing marks on the timing belt does NOT set any piston at Top Dead Center - the pistons are actually set to the complete middle of the stroke for ALL 4 pistons when all the timing marks are aligned. You can see that when she pulls off the heads.

From what I found out on these cars the most commonly affected models w/ head gasket problems are the Impreza, the Legacy, and the Outback models between the years of 1999-2004. The main reason that they have the issues is because they share the 2.5-liter SOHC engine. Subaru head gasket problems have occured in the Forester, Impreza, Outback, Legacy, and Baja in 2005. The engines, as she stated in the video, are boxer-style engines. These motors lay flat and the pistons move laterally, balancing weight accurately and quickly. They sit lower in the vehicle for an improved handling. HOWEVER, fluids have a likelihood to pool next to the head gaskets. This can cause acid in the fluids to erode the seals. There are various ways that you can decrease the chance of your head gasket failing when it comes to your Subaru cars. These tips can increase the lifespan of your Subaru, keep it working in a functioning condition, and prevent the head gasket problems. First, you need to change the engine oil on a regular basis. The combustion chamber in your car is where the compressed air fuel is met with a spark from the spark plug, which creates an explosion, and therefore, power. During the combustion process, not all of the fuel that enters the chamber is burnt. The fuel that isn’t burnt can mix with the engine oil, and the fuel that is a solvent can erode the seals and gaskets. Second, keep an eye on your Subaru’s battery in order to prevent a blown head gasket or head gasket problems. The battery is very close to the radiator and part of the electrical system in the car - this can influence the voltage in the cooling system, which might make coolant corrosive as a result. Third, you should start changing the coolant in your Subaru on a regular basis. The coolant can become corrosive and deteriorate seals and gaskets if you don’t change the coolant regularly. Fourth, make sure you are knowledgeable of the parts and services that have been implemented into your Subaru. For example, you should use spark plugs and specific parts that were designed for Subaru models. The combustion temperatures can be negatively affected by non original equipment, causing Subaru head gasket problems. Lastly, make sure that you have the vehicle inspected by someone who is a license and authorized Subaru specialist or technician. Bringing your car in to be checked by a specialist means that you can ensure you have the best care for your car, and that there will be a prevention of Subaru head gasket problems.

Thank you so much. I have couple of questions though? 1. Why you haven't used the OEM bolts if the head was not wrapped? 2.I am just not sure how reliable this head gasket compared to other types like the OEM, FELPRO and the six stars that most people recommend?. I would love to hear people that had tried this headgasket. After all this is the type of job you want to do once. 3. I don't see that tool to hold the camshaft and crankshaft from your list. Do you carry it?

1. OEM bolts were not used because it came as a full gasket set that 1A makes 2. 1A makes that head gasket I'd personally go with cometic or oem subi ones too 3. Just get one from your subi dealership

Good question. This engine use torque to tells bolts. She did the finally tightening in degrees not lb/ft. The bolts stretch as their tightened. Subaru are easier than ford powered strokes, I had a 4 foot breaker bar to get that last 90 degrees.

Great info here! One thing I would do differently: I would lube on and under the head bolt washer. Also I would cover the antifreeze holes with some plastic plugs or even a rag, before cleaning the o-ring groove. Amazing thing: you said very correctly, '6mm bolt with the 10 mm socket head"! That's extremely rare in the KZbin videos. Thank you!

Great video. If you have trouble removing the torque converter bolts through the little window, you can always pull the intake and coolant crossover pipe to get a straight shot at those bolts. Just need to place the intake back on top after so you can use the lift ring to pick up the motor.

This is an amazingly in depth video! great job to everyone that worked on this in front of and behind the scenes. informative, straight to the point and you actually cover the full tear down and rebuild with the little quirks along the way. I am going to be replacing my sisters head gaskets and up in her 03 Malibu 3.1L, you wouldn't by chance have one laying around somewhere you can record the same type of video do you? 😅

This is a great video. Very informative. The tech really explains everything in great detail. As far as the kit goes. I think it's a great kit. Very complete. However, I would like to see 1A Auto upgrade this kit to the MLS Head Gaskets. The ones that currently come with it look they are still coated with that graphite coating which unfortunately means that whoever uses this kit, will be doing it again after about 100k to 120k. If they fix that, this kit is set.

Great video, very comprehensive, but having wrenched on these Subie engines a bit myself, when you go through the trouble to do the head gaskets I would definitely check and adjust your valve lash clearances. It's tedious and sort of delicate work, but it's worth it to make sure it's right, especially as the heads were sent to a machine shop, and some won't set them or check them unless you specifically ask them to. So much easier to do while the motor is on a stand.

@@1AAuto Yer most welcome. I’ve been having some problems since we got the car. I’ve replaced the fuel pump and alternator and now it won’t start at all. Before it died on my daughter, just stopped while on her job. Was towed home and I put my battery booster on it and it started then removed the negative to the battery and it died telling me it was alternator but the guy we got it from mentioned the started may be bad or was going bad, The alternator was simple but now all I get is a click, has a brand new battery, two months old. All the lights bells and whistles work fine so I’m guessing he was right that it’s the starter. It had a few things wrong. Between fuel pimp, alternator, new head lights, hatchback lifts and now the starter. What is your opinion on this? I have to put my daughter car on the back burner to replace the water pump on my town and country in the morning and I can get the starter from Napa. Plz let me know what your thoughts are. Greatly appreciated!

As a former Subaru owner, I will say the most prudent thing to do about the head gasket problem such as this is to trade it in for another vehicle. This is by no means a permanent fix and will relapse no matter how you baby it down the road. Subaru makes junky engines and they leave their customers high and dry.

Why didn't you plug the oil galleries before sanding? How long do you expect it to last with all that debris going into the crankcase and galleries? Always block your oil ports off, never expose contaminates to the lubrication system. Other then that great video!
