Appreciate the video, but this is why I do most of my own mechanics. Even the KZbin videos are rough. No reason she had to bash that lower bolt in and bend the mount or cut off the old top bolt if spinning. No reason to jack up the diff either..... The top threads have a flat spot to put a second wrench so the shock does not spin when removing old bolt and the bottom of the shock can be compressed and moved into place by hand and the lower bolt slides right in. Just finished my install without removing spare tire with truck on the ground. Job took about an hour to complete outside with no shop in minus 5 degrees Celsius. Also did front struts a couple weeks back and both jobs are relatively easy if you modify/plan this project as you go along. 10 years ago I had a mechanic do the same 2 jobs and it was about a 1000 bucks. Front KYB struts where toast, but I do lots of off road driving. The rear Blistines from 10 years back were still pretty good, but changed them out anyway. Perfect backyard Covid19 project.

Valid points. I can’t believe she bent the bottom mount bracket lol

I found that a 12 inch metal blade in a saw all works great to cut off the top bolts to remove shocks. Be careful on driver side not to cut into the wire harness. Easy reach thru fender well

Before you waste time with a torch, try using a Cresent wrench and a 14 mm wrench, and lots of patience

The KYB shocks I have are similar but came with 3 washers instead of 2. Is there a different arrangement on the stud to put 3 washers on with 2 bushings?

If you have enough thread, you can add two stacked nuts on the top and leave enough gap for you to loosen the actual nut while keeping the stacked nuts tightened with a ratchet/wrench.

Please include all tools needed. Just because you’re in the rust belt doesn’t mean we are. Would be helpful to have the wrench size for top shock mount nut.

You don’t need to jack it up for this job. You can, but it’s not necessary

Put some PB Blaster on those top nuts a few minutes before you take a wrench to them.

Vise grip pliers for the top and a ratcheting 14mm wrench for the tower nut. You're welcome.

I don't know. Both of those tools seem useless when the shock mount is rusted out

im guessing that stuck nut thing way up top can get some coca cola on it :) those usually come loose after being painted with coke :) and while i wait for it to bubble, i read the pamphlet from berkshire hathaway on being less white! ;) hahaha

Would a propane torch work to get the top nut off?
@arontesfay25202 жыл бұрын
Nope. The acetylene torch was used to cut the mount, not to heat it up.

If you haven't totally screwed up that nut? How do you get the shock from spinning. My chevys always had a spot where I could put a wrench underneath and hold it. I dont see anything like this on toyotas
@hoglyfer_r70274 жыл бұрын
Vice grips with a really strong grip if you have to tach weld the vice grips to the shock
@dodgeramsport013 жыл бұрын
Never had one to spin on any make or model, must be doing it wrong
@Loojmemhav5 жыл бұрын
Why didn't you bolt the bottom first before you tighten the top nut? Wouldn't that be easier so you don't need to jackup the truck to fit the bolt through on the bottom.?
@Motokarts5 жыл бұрын
Or hammer the bolt through, damaging the mount and likely the bolt threads 🔩🔨😞
