Ive done this job on three different trucks. My tip is take a very close look at the provided screws. Every time, they have been a different thread. I learned the hard way on the 1st one and it cracked the base of the distributor. Now, I just re-use the old screws every time.

My truck would not start. When it cranked, it acted like the 350 was out of time. I remembered limping it in 10 years ago and having the same symptom. After way too much time dealing with the back torx screw, I finally removed it. The cap was badly corroded. The replacement cap had metal screws instead of the machine screws. I used one of those new screws in the front and reused the old good machine screw in the back. The truck started right up and runs great. Thanks for the reminder video!

I just did this thanks to their video. I was laying on the engine from the front. And getting that back screw is all be feel only. A massive pain. Makes me wish for the old days when I had straight six cars with EVERYTHING right there. You could do a full tune up in a half hour.

Do y’all recommend putting dielectric grease on the metal components before install to reduce corrosion over time?

That’s what i would have done.

One thing I noticed is your new parts have brass terminals that's a plus brass is a better conductor plus it don't corrode as much! Great video!

If the rotor isn't clocked right you will have misfires and possibly further issues with starting the vehicle. To align the rotor if you forget, the engine needs to be at top dead center. There are some good youtube videos showing how to do this.

These flat cap distributors are famous for misfire issues. Here is a YT video of a mechanic putting current to one terminal showing how spark can jump to another terminal. I have a boat powered by a GM 350 Vortec and have had numerous issues with these caps, i found a boater chat blog and many guys with boats powered with a GM using that cap, all having same problem. It is a BAD design so even buying a new cap & rotor is like rolling the dice it might work or be bad right out of the box. GM does not make the Vortec engine anymore so it appears they have no interest in fixing the problem their engineers created when they re-design the traditional style cap. Here is that video and worth the watch for all people dealing with this issue. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqXWo2Snhc6HsKs

good video. question for others is: weren't you amazed at the 'tightness'' of area to get back screw off with torx 20. ? now weren't you pissed this damn general motors used a t-15, and a t-20 for what shoulda been a single screwdriver? either a or b ? still angry at the cheap effort to make me buy, rent 2 wrenches !! pisses me off. But this host here is fair presenter and has clear voice.

Worst tune up I've ever done. I'm 6 ft tall and I had to lay a blanket of the motor so I could crawl up in the engine bay to get the distributor and rotor off and back on. Not so easy for a 43 year old man who has back problems.😂 I wish I was 25 again.
@johnsb1550 Жыл бұрын
I know this is late, but why can't they make screws that have the little keepers on them, like they used to? Obviously, they have never performed this task. I would also advise anyone doing this job to be a little more gentle, because alot of these past are cheap plastic. Also, dielectric grease is your friend here on the plug wires, NOT inside the cap and rotor!!!
