Bought my 2005 Silverado in 2007. 14 years later I just rolled over 211k miles, and she is still kicking it. I've addressed 4 out of the 5 issues you mentioned (never dealt with a knock sensor). Here's a couple more: 1) Day time running lights 2) Airbag (impact) sensors behind the bumper 3) Stepper motors in the dash 4) Transfer Case encoder motor sensor 5) Castech heads Overall this has been a rock solid performing truck. Michigan winters have taken their toll on the body, but that's to be expected. I'll keep her on the road as long as I can. With the limited maintenance I've had to do, this truck doesn't owe me a thing.

I have a 2006 Silverado 2500HD with 145,000 miles. I have only had the tailgate latch issue and the steering column issue. Each was really easy and cheap to fix. The tail gate latch fix is a $2.00 plastic clip to reconnect the rod(s) to the latch. I solved the steering column issue not be replacing the intermediate shaft, instead by an almost free solution. I used a zip tie between the steering column plastic housing and an adjacent metal structure under the dash to pull the play out of the steering column. This held up for 3-4 years, problem developed again, so I has to put in a new zip tie, problem solved yet again, total cost 5 cents. This has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever had. I have only spent money on things that wear out such as tires, brakes, wipers, shocks, a couple of ball joints, belts, and fluids.

I’ve had my ‘03 Silverado now going on 21 years. Just had a recent surprise when I was pulled over for no brake lights. First thing I thought, a fuse. Never had fuse go out on this one. Checked a 10 amp at dash fuse box. Fine. Then tried a different switch at the brake pedal. Nope. Center brake light working. Didn’t know there were two separate fuses for brake lights. The other one I found out about when I Googled. VEH 15 amp was the culprit. As for common problems, haven’t had these 5, but had an early recall when the distributor was getting moisture. An alternator, the pumps, hubs eventually wore out. But went many years w/o anything, so I’m not complaining. The best vehicle I’ve ever owned.

I would add the following items to your list for any truck of that era. 1. Brake lines, they are very prone to rust and your going to have to replace them. 2. 4 Wheel Drive transfer case pump vein leaks. There are some nice kits out there to alleviate this problem. @@trevorjameson3213 The northern states have rust on most vehicles that see winter use. Rockers, cab corners, fenders, door bottoms, wheel well lips, rear bumpers, and even frames rust out up here. The fuel lines and brake lines get destroyed from the salt in the winter weather. I bought a 2002 Avalanche from Florida and had it shipped up here back in 2013 and kept it spotless by avoiding using it in the snow as much as I could. Rust free trucks of this generation sell like hotcakes up here. Could make a bunch getting them down south and filling the back of a car hauler to sell here.

How do you make this list without including the 4l60e......everyone i know with one of these trucks has had too replace the 4l60e trans because if 3rd and 4th gear... i know some people on their 3rd before 200k miles. The 4l60e, tailgate handle, and balljoints are by far the most universal issues for these trucks.

have changed tons of those knock sensors. up here in northern Alberta, the rear ones rot out, usually because of all the mud and water that gets under the rubber plug. more often than not i have to replace the valley cover also, after that rear sensor breaks off, then you have to pull the cover up over whats left of the sensor. with the seal staying underneath it usually holds all the mud in place, which is a good thing since its open to the cam shaft underneath it. and the rear hole of the cover is so rotted that it can't be reused. then i usually put a bit of silicone around the rubber plugs before i seat them in the holes, the put the little dam of silicone around the holes like GM says.

Had a 2004 Silverado 1500 for 14 years. Only had few major problems. For the Front Wheel Bearing, everything I read or watch said 30 minutes to repair. They were partly right. Took about 10-15 minutes to disconnect everything and 15 minutes to reinstall. Took many hours to get it out! Heat and penetrating oil over the day a few times and some 5 pound sledge hammering finally got it out! :) Replaced the dash instrument cluster, easy fix. In the end, wouldn't pass emissions test. It wouldn't clear two OBD, Cat and Eval. No matter what I did, they wouldn't clear. Wanted a bigger truck so traded it in for a 2021 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD WT.

I think the speedometer issue should be on this list too, along with the heated seat elements (if you had the leather interior). Great truck overall. Engine has been SOLID. Oh... the three I've had is the fuel vent canister, knock sensor (I replaced both and the wire harness when one went), and of course the tailgate latches/handle that just failed after 17 years of use. My truck used to be my mining vehicle and has seen many many rugged off road miles over the years and now just pavement and beach sand these days.
