I have a 2003 4.3L V6 powered Sierra with 294,500 miles, I bought it new in 2003. It was my first truck, I bought it as cheap as I could, it cost me $15,600.00 out the door. The engine still does not burn oil, very reliable with mostly minor issues. Now as I look back in hindsight if I were to change anything I would have maybe bought two of them instead of one.

If you guys dislike how your beds rust, Stepside, Protec, and quadsteer beds have fiberglass and plastic in the areas that would commonly rust away, so concider one of those beds instead of a steel bed.

The one thing iv learned is that these engines can't be killed but forget to change the oil and you'll have a nasty tick coming from the lifters always listen for a tick when you buy one of these to ensure it was taken care of and not abused also look at the exhaust manifold bolts especially on the right side near the firewall because they tend to break off otherwise these are the best truck iv seen they just don't die

Did all the regular work brake lines fuel lines. Drone that truck till 356,000 miles and then sold it. Most need the frame cross bars replaced. If you can do the work you're self it's worth it. I'll go ahead and put this here in case someone is having this issue and can't figure it out. But, if you're slowly burning oil and have small amounts of white smoke come out on start, it could be the drivers side valve cover. A problem from when it was made, is that the valve cover where the pressure escapes, oil would get in there cause the hole was too big, and the hole for that excess oil to drip out was too small, it would get clogged. You can either drill it out to make it bigger, though you risk metal shavings, or buy an after market part, I haven't had a problem with it since. I have a 2007 chevy silverado 1500 classic.

Just picked up a 2000 2500 LS extended cab with 148k on the clock. This truck os in pretty good shape. Replacing the seat covers, putting in a spray in or paint bed liner. Some scratches and a nice bubble in the hood paint but overall this thing is a beast. Bought it to haul my travel trailer around. Traded an F150 for a Volt a little over a year ago and the Volt, while a fantastic vehicle, just laughs when I put it near the trailer. 14 months of the rv sitting in storage is about to come to an end with my new/old Silverado 2500

About the heads all 4.8/5.3 came with either 862/706 heads and not all of these had that issue replacing the head to either 243/799 heads are common but not necessarily a have to on a stock application as these were used on newer 4.8/5.3 (combustion chamber 64cc) but 317 is a no go don't replace the stock heads with the 317 castings as those only came in the 6.0 these heads have a larger combustion chamber (71cc vs 61cc) resulting in a drop in compression and poor engine performance when used on a 4.8/5.3

I had an '05 GMC Sierra quad cab with the 5.3 V8. The speedometer would quit going down the road after about an hour of driving. If you followed the computer's oil life percentage values, the engine oil would have clumps in it when oil change time arrived. I had to keep the spare tire in the bed as the cable winch for holding it in the bed froze up and I couldn't find a replacement either from the dealer, aftermarket or in a junkyard. Apparently that was an all too common part to fail and replacements were just unavailable. This was the truck that finally made me swear off GM products.

Have an 01 with a 5.3 with 165k and it still runs and drives really good. They get weird quirks but are such good trucks and easy to work on and maintain. Just had to replace the water pump super easy and cheap. I do hate the abs systems on these I prefer them not to work. I love my truck and just keep looking for excuses to replace it but I can’t find any reasons. Just wash them good and often and it will prevent rust make sure to spray off in wheel wells and underneath too. Wish GMC made vehicles like this still

03 Silverado 1500... Only issue is persisting check engine light with evap code... everything has been replaced and it still persists. Wondering if it's the fuel pump?
@AcmeRacing
@AcmeRacing 3 жыл бұрын
These are prone to problems with the front hubs. The tone ring rusts, the bearings get loose, and antilock triggers at low speed stops on dry pavement. Fuel lines, evap vent lines, and brake lines all rust out. Rear spring shackles rust and break if you don't catch them in time. I had the 4.3 with a chronic oil leak at the front seal. Had to have the intake manifold gaskets done when I found coolant leaking into the oil, too. Dash and radio light bulbs are soldered in and hard to replace. Minor but annoying problem: the pivot point behind the tailgate handle gets sticky and keeps the tailgate from latching. If your tailgate is falling open, pull the plastic trim behind the handle out and lube the pivot in the middle of the latch cables. Mine was a 2002 Chevrolet WT bought new. It had the rare 5 speed manual.

My fix for the ABS is to get rid of it. I have never liked the activation of the ABS and the few occasions it has gone off it was because of a failure in the system. I've had a few of these trucks, they are really solid overall. Rust is manageable if you clean it often. I live in MN and never had a frame go bad on any of mine but the lines and shackles have.
@AcmeRacing
@AcmeRacing 3 жыл бұрын
@@KoaGuy At 15 years old with 170,000 miles my frame was still good. The bottoms of the doors were rusting out and the second gear synchro was worn out. I traded it rather than investing in a trans rebuild, clutch, and door shells or patches. I got my money's worth but the recurring front hub/anti-lock issue was annoying.
@loritobin2578
@loritobin2578 Жыл бұрын
Fixes that worked for me with the antilock activating was to remove the sensors, clean the hub assembly as rust develops and with that swelling pushes out the sensor causing the ABS to not work properly and activates when you are almost stopped. Check the sensor head to make sure there isn't any rust on it and clean as necessary. Add some antisieze lubricant onto the hub and sensor head and put it back together, and you are good to go.

@@KoaGuy No, no, no. GM printed circuit boards are junk, just look up some instrument cluster repair videos. I found shoddy solder joints on my IC and rearview mirror. Driver's door module isn't conformal coated so moisture + dust causes bizarre behavior like the seat heaters coming on uncommanded. The HVAC control module is so bad, Dorman reproduces it. Dorman! Never had any of these problems with Fords. They're an electrical nightmare.

These are the best modern trucks made and if it wasn't for rust, they'd go for 40+ years. The only trucks that compare for their generation are the 67-72 c10 and a lot of those are still on the road.

exterior wise, the only hardware problem is the rear tailgate handle, and handle housing. Interior, the window actuator trim, or the whole unit would just fall out. on the extended cab, the door handles on the rear would VERY often die, and the rod connecting the handle to the latch would fall of. The engines, the LB7(01-03) had some injector problems, and oil cooler gasket problems. the LLY/LBZ (Late 04-07) didnt have problem, the only difference between the LLY and LBZ is the transmission, although there is literally no difference what so ever, at all, the LLY shares the same transmission as the LB7 which is the 5 speed A1000 Allison, LBZ had a 6 speed Allison 1000. the only difference is the TCM, the A1000 has the 6th gear its just not programed to use it

Pop the plastic trim out from the tailgate handle. Behind it you'll see two levers on a pivot, with each one attached to a cable that goes to the tailgate latches. Lube the pivot and your tailgate will latch and stay closed. You're welcome.

You dont want a 317 head on a 5.3. That is 6.0 head and is designed for 4.0 inch bore. It would loose a lot of compression on a 5.3 and run poorly. If you change cylinder heads only use 4.8 and 5.3 castings on 5.3 engines.

Evap codes, g80 rear ends going out, trans not the strongest, tcase likes to put holes in the case. Ball joints are weak, Blend door issues, driver side heated seat goes out. Never heard of the pump snapping a steering shaft in half. And the only time Ive seen G80s go bad is people abusing the truck beyond reason. Ball joints are stout and greaseable, only seen big wheel and tires with lift kits wipe out ball joints (aside from having a gazillion miles). And not all the transmission options are weak.

Have the U joint caps tack welded in. If ya don’t. They WILL fly off resulting in a driveshaft falling out And service not. Get the transmission serviced around or near 100k. If not about 125-135k.
