Awesome, it always makes my day to hear comments like this. Are you using a Garmin Striker 4 by chance? If so, here is a little trick...use the flasher as a portion of your screen on the right hand side, and look in the lower corner...it tells you about how big your cone is.

Ok, make sure you have the flasher on the side enabled, and then look in the lower right corner, you should see a number and that number should be your cone diameter. The Garmin will tell you your cone angle, but many others do not. Your content is really useful. Thanks for sharing. I’d like to use a striker 4 mounted on the transom of my 23ft sailboat as a marine electronics budget option. As an old boat, I don’t have electronic depth sounder. Will I’ll be able to know the structures like rocks ahead or it’s only able to see the bottom straight under the transducer?
@1Cast1Fish8 ай бұрын
It will only see what is under the transducer...If you want a better option for what's up ahead, I would buy a higher end Echomap model and add a updated mapping card. The mapping card will have local water depths and most hazards marked.

Thanks again Paul for these awesome tips. Which transducer would you recommend for the striker 4cv unit,I plan to fish at 1500ft max at sea. I don't have the resources to do a full upgrade but it would be nice to get a transducer that can go the depth or close to that dept.
@1Cast1FishАй бұрын
So I always want to be as honest as possible with my opinions on questions like this. I personally would use the GT20 that comes with the 4CV, it is a upgrade over the standard transducer already. The truth is, even though the transducer may say a max depth of 1500ft, that is perfect conditions...that never really exist. Normally transducers are functional to about 1/2 to 3/4 of the advertised Max Depth. Sure they will go deeper, but I think performance starts to suffer. As for a new transducer, you will spend 200+ on a higher end transducer, more than the fish finder itself. I would save for a larger unit with a bigger screen for those depths over a new transducer. The bigger screen will help much more IMO for seeing targets, especially at those depths.

Great videos! I finished installing a Striker 4 on my kayak and I'm taking it out for the first test run tomorrow. I've reviewed all your videos and it's going to save me a lot of time, so thank you very much. This is my first time with a sonar fish finder, but I have over 35 years of radar experience so trying to understand the commonalities. The arch symbols and the time for the return in distance from outer edge of the cone to directly underneath, I understand. My problem is where is the outer edge? Let's say you are stationary. Is there anyway to tell if fish are approaching bow to stern or port to starboard? Thanks again, real good work to help us rookies.

I tend to call 50-75ft deep. You can also use both and see which works for you best. The good news is that on the ice there are less variables such as boat or wave motion to fight as well

I just bought the Plus(my first and I'm a newbie ) I have been looking at videos for a couple of weeks and am still having trouble comprehending that most agree that when a fish enters the screen, it is behind the boat.(transom mount) It seems to me that in 30 ft of water and set on 77(24 diameter of cone at the bottom), that fish entering the screen would not have cleared the back of the boat unless it is very close to the boat. Also, how can you tell if the fish is below the boat or 8' right or left at a 30' depth? Like I said, I'm new....lol By the way, the video is full of good info. Thanks

Hi you were very informative thank you for your efforts man. But I Wonder if old CV-20TM transducer have better view angle than New GT-20TM transducer? I have Striker Plus 5CV but it includes GT-20TM and not the CV-20TM. I have heard that the old transducer have more angle of view than the new one. How can I improve my angle of view? Thanks
