How to repair a transaxle, sorry no mower mudding on this one..

Transaxle repair on a 4 speed peerless in a 12 hp Murray. The mower had been stuck in first gear in someones yard for a while

got the thing apart & found that the Check Ball was in the bottom of the pan, the spring was MIA and the disc brake was caked with a grease dirt sludge.... waiting on a new spring just now but anticipating the thing to work like new once it's all re-installed. (It's a MST-206-545C) interesting thing was it was overfilled with actual Gear oil, & someone did a bad rush job with the RTV (was leaking), the oil looked like gold paint though so im suspecting bushing wear.

***** got it all back together & installed & it still sticks "in gear" randomly. It shifts like a dream when the engine is off but start er up & it randomly doesn't want to come out of gear. Shift keys looked fine when I had it apart, so I'm not sure what the problem is. *scratches head* (Linkage maybe?)

found the problem, for whatever reason the clutch is not engaging completely unless the pedal is practically bottomed out. trying to find a way to adjust this out, will keep you posted.

This is the exact same problem that I have with my transaxle right now! Thankfully someone recommended that I searched your channel and sure enough you have the video that they were talking about! I thought that it would have been much more of a job to do but after watching this I'm going to get going on it. I have out up a video of the problem and a couple other updates

I had the same Model Tractor, it was even red too. I got it for the Engine mostly but I kept all the other parts that were good. I currently have a Yard Pro I am working on to drive around town this Summer ( it's a Very Small Town). I still have a few more modifications to do like Taillights, Horn. I already changed the drive Pulleys so I should be able to get the Legal Speed Limit. I have Four more coming in, one I will be putting together for a Neighbor Lady to use as an actual Mower one of the others is getting gutted and crossed with a Honda ATV I'm setting it up for more of an Off Road machine, I won't be using much of the Original mower other than the outside sheetmetal. I mostly fix things for other people here so I pick up Tractors, Lawn mowers, small Engines so the extra parts come in handy. It keeps me busy, basically something productive to do and it helps the Folks here who don't have much money to keep things up. I also pick up Bicycles for parts for the Kids too. I'm also doing the Bodywork on a 1959 Chevy Apache for one of my Old customers. Well I enjoyed your video I like to see what other people are doing with these machines. I tell you for a while after I had to give up working because of health issues I about went Crazy, but I found that I still have some usefulness left. Again Thank You for the Video!

Thanks a lot guys. I put the silicone on and it sealed it pretty good but it still leaks a little from the axle seals at the wheels. It still had that pivot. Maybe I put too much oil in. It shifts great now though. Im not sure what "brass bushings" you were referring too. Thanks again for the instruction!!!!!

I have same unit mower, its 14 hp... transaxle had same issue but top housing is worn bad because seal failed.

It has water in the transaxle where did it come from? 2:00 surface rust I don't think so either that axle seal/ bearing has gone and or the mower mower went for a long swim allowing water into the transaxle. You needed to clean all that old grease and water out of the transaxle FFS it also would be contaminated with metal wear and tear bits. The transaxle would then be clean and it would be easier to inspect other gears for wear and test operation. Really like your oil mix. I'm converting to oil (SAE 140) and would like to know what Lucas additive you use and what ratio. I have a Craftsman w/Foote 6 sp and your mix would work great. btw great vids

looks like my shift problem is the last piece of shift linkage the black bar directly om the trans the one hole with two flat sides is worn out so it has some play in it, dont know where to buy one or how to cut a hole like that so maybe the local machine shop can make ome

All I needed was to flip the main drive gear around. Slip the chain over I had the chain on after the gear and it needed to be in front

i will try to keep driving it see if it frees up also i need new belts so thatll allow me to actually drive it without problems ill check today to see if the pulley spins any better after i have ran it. also when reassembling for the shifter i kinda just guessed on placement of thr pin but if i can shify between gears it must be in the collar right??

G'day mate, I just rebuilt the exact same box as that,, the exact same problem, rust on the gear shaft. And the woodruff key and pulley on top were gone too. Anyway, after looking at several you tube vids, I put it all back together. Works like a charm,, nice and smooth. BUT I have 5 reverse gears and 1 forward, something is in back to front,, any ideas? I just subscribed.......love the videos!!!! I just took apart my mid 90's murray transaxle, because it wouldnt reverse. Sanded the rust off and it reverses now, but now the oil is leaking from the transaxle case pretty bad. When I put the case back together I kept wanting to pivot and it never really sat together good so It forced closed when putting the bolts back in it. I looked for something that was causing it not to fit together but couldnt find anything. Any ideas? about to start over

Hello.. I have a peerless 206 6 speed manual trans..in a craftsman lt2000. shift linkage working good on the outside.. but when pedal engaged I have nothing. No drive no brakes very strange.. Also brakes / caliber is working fine.. have nothing in all forword gears or reverse.. mower rolls very easy..I'm thinking I'm going to have to Crack it open. It was off a rear engine rider n I'm putting it on a front engine mower Explainess why I had to flip the gears n chain I had it made to where it had a short wheelbase but hated having the shifter in the back so I switched the gears around

it looks to me like the transaxle had gotten water in it, or why would it rust, it should not rust in there! i have never seen a rusty one, just broken pieces, or seized from being submerged.

Peerless 5 speed same as urs but no std stamp I flipped it it just had 5 reverse and 1 forward had to filp chain on other side

I just had taken apart a peerless 5 speed for the rusty shift collar problem it is from a john deere stx38 but when I finished and put it back together the pulley turns hard any suggestions??? maybe all the gears aren't lined up but I checked that once after I reassembled it and it turned hard put it back and it turned hard again what do I do

Hey I have a murrey hydrostatic rider. It won't start unless I jump it with my boat battery. I bought a new battery for the mower and does the same thing. I have replaced the key swith and the seloined, get the same thing. I set the boat battyery beside the starter,hook the pos. to the pos. wire that goes to the starter. Then nagitive to battery,then touch it to the outside of starter and it starts? THANKS

Thanks for the videos. I'm working to clean up my 6 speed Peerless transaxle that has some rust on the shifting shaft and am not sure what grease to use. I believe the recommended grease is Peerless bentonite grease but its pretty expensive. What grease do you use, which Lucas additive and how much of it do you use? I've scooped out most of the grease that was in there already and so I have a lot to replace.

I think my 3rd or 2nd gear is missing teethit has always surged in that one gear...how bad is it to crack the case? I see myself and a drill and many hours of drilling out broken bolts to put through bolts in lol

Hi, I have a Rally Plus riding mower, 12.5 hp. The gears stuck for a day or so, got them unstuck without opening the transaxle..... Gears feel pretty stiff, What and where can I add that will maybe free them up a little? I can't find a fill valve that is outright obvious to me! I got the transaxle apart and cleaned it up. I found one of the shift keys broke. Trying to locate a replacement. New is around 70 dollars, hoping to just find a used one. Do I need to add a Lucas additive to this oil, and if so, how much. Thanks for the help.

@@maurilioe1 ok I remember now. When I rebuilt my transaxle I cleaned all the grease out and cleaned all parts real well. I replaced with really heavy gear oil. I don't remember what weight but it was the heaviest I could find. I also mixed in about 25% of the total volume the STP oil additive. It makes the oil super sticky. This however will leak out the axles as the axles are not sealed. You might be able to find some seals to work properly if you take it to a machine supply store.

How ya all doing look got a 6 speed spicer transmission cleaned it up and reinstalled everything on the dry test was good fired had three gears out of 6 n no reverse what did I. do. wrong your help would be greatly appreciated thank you all for your time and consideration in this matter have a good day
