So is MIG/FCAW used commonly on pipe in the field or was this just a demonstration?

@@grimmfortelight1983 it is common for fab shops and indoor production of pressure vessels. If your thinking outside on pipelines this process won’t be used because the wind will displace the shielding gas. And it’s just a vid of my students doing it for the first time on schedule 40 low carbon pipe.
