Thanks for uploading the video. I was doing this same with lighter stock in a welding class. From watching you, I had my arms properly positioned, but my face wasn't close enough to the weld. You have your hands just above your ears at the start. I will try to remember that on my next try. I am getting a better helmet to see the outline of the weld too. I had trouble seeing the edges of the metal bevels using my current helmet. As a result , I wasn't going straight like I thought I was.

Put some strong backs on the root side, with a mouse hole cut out . Ie two pieces of 12mm thickness flat bar,with a half circle cut out in middle of flat bar , doing this also will stop the plate being tacked on the root. And keep the plate welded more flat ,unless this has been preset for distortion.

I work in a building that has some exposed w-shapes that look to be 1" thick, or close to it. These beams have been mechanically coupled when a connection is required and I always wondered why as there are 4 rows of 9 bolts each sandwichng the beam connection with 1" plates that extend at least 24" each side of the connection. That is literally 24x6x2=72 bolts! I assumed it has something to do with the difficulty in welding members of this size and watching this video helped my understand possibly why mechanical attachments might be favored due the amount of heat this many filling passes generates. Thanks for sharing.

After the hot pass on base metal that thick you need to transition to a 5/32 diameter filler rod. I worked at Newport News Shipbuilding and you would get reamed for welding flat down with 1/8 electrodes. These schools need to teach students to carry a larger puddle and get that joint filled.

With beveled open root, does material thickness really effect Amp settings that much? I was doing 3/8 material with same rod, bevel, same gap and land and 80A was just too hot. Hard to control keyhole. 70A turned out being the ticket. With equal gap an land an bevel the point of penetration is equal in both cases. that means the only difference is heat absorbance from the sides right?

It's not structural, it's not tested. It HAS to hold. And...it does. I will say, nobody's life depends on it. When I did structure, it's a whole different ball game. Where I'm at now, it's more rush. The Welding Charts from the Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding suggests a width thicker than 1/8" of electrode for 1" material. Please help me to understand this discrepancy.
@jclay66802 жыл бұрын

After hours of frustration, I got it, maybe it will help others: 1) go slow-feel it biting into the metal, 2) grind a groove and you 'feel' that stick evers so slightly against the metal as you drag it.

Question? Why are the 1 inch plates so warped? The welds look nice but thr plates have excessive warpage. How do you prevent that in the real world?
@chrisraczak6931 Жыл бұрын
By not welding continuously and allowing a cool down period between welds. Also, this piece will be so hot when it’s done that you can just throw it in a Vice and straighten it, I know it seems impossible at that thickness but it will work and it’s easy.
@chrisraczak6931 Жыл бұрын
Also, the chances of you actually welding a 1 inch plate in the field is highly unlikely unless you’re building bridges

What do you do to counter/correct the distortion? I noticed the plates distorted quite a lot by the time you'd done several runs.
@chrisnation12792 жыл бұрын
you'd really just have to let the metal cool down if you don't want it to distort. I'm guessing he was trying to finish this test plate quicker for the video and he likely didn't give it as much time to cool. it really however you prefer to do it.👍
@SyengSyeng2 жыл бұрын
Give each electrode pass at the very least a 1 minute cooldown. He was burning the shit out of the metal causing distortion that would fail him a test. As the previous comment said, most likely did it for KZbin and tried getting it done fast. Just remember, fast is slow, and slow is fast. Rushing will cause you major headaches. This is true for distortion to even welding weaves. When I had to take certified test, I had melting sticks that would melt on your metal if it was too hot. Had to make sure it was a certain temperature to even weld on it. Gave it 5 minute breaks because quenching wasn’t an option of course. Passed the bend test.
