Elephant versus Helicopter

A chopper flies low with a loud engine above Meru National Park, Kenya. Bushes are a standard shelter but not on this Friday morning within the park. Aerially, the pilot can see herds of elephants. It is unsettling for the jungle giants and intrinsically, they scatter. Some jumbo families are broken up in the clamber but babies will not leave their mother’s side.
The Vet Doctor carefully takes aim at the elephant from the helicopter to make sure he darts the right elephant and at the right position. It's usually, a clean shot, delivering a cocktail of Thiafentanyl (an opioid), and Azaperone (a tranquilizer), into the elephant's hindquarters. The drugs are meant to make the elephants drowsy/sleepy.
These drugs usually take full effect within 10 minutes and that is usually a problem, because, with just a few minutes left on the animal’s feet, it will quickly stumble through the thickets in search of a place to hide. This is where a great Pilot and his chopper come in handy to ensure the darted animal doesn't run off into the jungle or cross over to people's homes. Between darting and the drugs taking effect on the animal, it's usually a battle between the elephant and the Pilot.
Finally, the elephant pauses, sways his feet, then tips over, drops, and falls to a deep slumber. While the animal sleeps, the ground crew takes over to ensure the animal is safe and undertakes the intended procedure/s on the darted animal. When the ground crew is done, another Vet Doctor working in tandem with the grounds team administers an antidote to resuscitate the animal. The crew then signals to the Aerial team to head off in search of the next elephant.

The Helicopter is a Kenya Wildlife Preserve Helicopter it's not teasing the Elephant if you look closely on the animal's left side you'll see a Tranquilizer Dart embedded in it's left flank meaning this elephant was darted for medical checkups and the chopper is just preventing it from rejoining it's herd by forcing it on the defensive and to let the dart take effect.

It's a shame the whole process wasn't shown rather than just the footage of 'Elephant v helicopter' - (which does make it look like the poor elephant is just being tormented for the sake of it) . That said - if people had read the description of the whole event before mouthing off ....! While I do agree it must be stressful for the elephants - I can understand the need to keep them from disappearing into the bush before being given the necessary veterinary treatment. I do hope all the elephants get back together again safely.
