Let me preface the video with this statement: "Dalton and I are the two greatest woodsmen to have ever existed. We are a literal force of nature with an axe and our technique is impeccable.)
I'm totally just kidding...
This is one of those videos we like to show because:
1) part of being transparent is showing the not-so-perfect things.
2) It's fun to watch things go south.
3) We had fun making this content.
Although no one should look to this video as a tutorial on how to fell a tree it is still a great video for showcasing the 22" Camp Carver (check out our second attempt video as well.)
The point of this video was to push the limits on the Camp Carver and show that the longer handle makes it a bit more than just a camp axe that can carve.
In a pinch, if you needed to, you could fell a tree probably 5" - 10" bigger than the tree featured in this video.
The issues did not have to do with the performance of the Camp Carver but more the inexperience of the user - our dear Dalton.
But the wacky thing about experience is that you can only gain it by doing "The Thing" - whatever that may be.
Unfortunately, when "The Thing" is felling a tree there's the added bonus that in the pursuit of that experience you might be flattened until dead by mother nature herself.
I hope you enjoy watching this - this tree is still going to good use - and if the comment you are currently typing is in all caps and/or includes a phrase like "learn to swing an axe why don't chya" you can save us all some time and just delete it for us!
Stay sharp, stay weird, and try to not get flattened until dead by a tree!

Just a hint...when you're making a second cut on a hung-up tree, you make the notch on the compression side of the tree, which would be just the opposite of the first notch. And the back cut should line up perfectly with the notch, not above or below. Always try to picture which side of the tree will close up on the cut and which side will open up. You're lucky you didn't get your saw stuck. When it comes right down to it, it's all physics. You should never have to kick a cut tree down. You'll eventually figure that out, but if someone leads you in the right direction, it's quicker and safer. Keep up the good work!

Dang man that literally happened to me almost exactly except I didn’t have a chain saw. Great job guy at trying your best out there, unfortunately we can’t always have the perfect scenario . I do like that you kept all of issues that were coming about in the video versus editing or picking a different tree to make it look perfect. Honesty for the win !! Great job guys 👍

I really appreciate this video. Great idea to show the CT Camp Carver at a job that is beyond what it's designed for. When you're in the woods and have a job to do you use the tool you have. This is a big job for a smaller axe. Yes your technique isn't perfect, but neither is mine. I would say you showed the tool is quite capable of cutting down that tree, twice. When I received my CT 24in Pack Axe, I went out and cut down a couple dozen 4in birch trees along a stretch of my trails. I used all the axes I owned so that I could see the difference is using the (in)correct axe. All of them capable of doing the full job of felling of felling and bucking. But the larger axes fell better, and the hatchet sizes prune off the top limbs better. Then I made spoons with some of the wood with different tools. Again all "can" do it, but they each have a range of tasks they excel at. Honestly in hindsight I feel like I should have processed at least one tree with a 4in bushcraft knife and a batton. Since I've done the split and spoon tests with that tool, but not the initial felling and limbing. Thanks for this video. I'm glad to see your not too afraid of internet trolls with nothing nice to say. It's almost refreshing to see they haven't peppered this video!
