SIDE DRUMS: Following a long history of battle tactics developed from the Romans and even earlier, battles of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries were fought by deploying infantry soldiers in rigid formations. Lines or squares were the most common formations as they were difficult to break up and gave virtually constant volleys of fire, sometimes in multiple directions. However battles could become become chaotic as they progressed and the side drum was the most audible way of giving signals to maintain discipline over the roar of battle. The drummer was therefore a key person in battle, as important as electronic communications today, and was posted near the command point to relay signals to the field commanders. Tight formations and their precise movement to marching pace, change of direction or change of location were signalled by the crisp drum beat which was crucial in maintaining the battle formation, and was practised extensively in drill. Whilst it was usually easy to identify the enemy, it was sometimes difficult to distinguish soldiers from your own different regiments and battalions in battle, so the system of Colours was developed, flags depicting a particular design of the battalions, and a marker for the command point and rallying point of that battalion. Drummers were charged with protecting the Colours and assisted in visually identifying the battalion command points by having contrasting tunic colours to their battalions/regiments. If the regiment had red tunics with blue facings (the colour of the collar, cuffs and trim), the Drummer would have a blue tunic with red facings. As this proved to make them an easy target for snipers, soon drummers were issued with tunics of the regimental/battalion colour, embellished with decorative lace. To this day, regimental drums are considered as important as the Colours they have historically protected. The sight of your Colours, and the sound of your battalion's drum signals indicated that the battalion still stood firm. As a Platoon within the combat deployable 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, the side drums of the Corps of Drums are fitted with drag ropes which reference the historical use of drag ropes to carry the drum on the back when on the march to battle and the use of the drum in battle. Side drums of the Band of the Grenadier Guards are not fitted with drag ropes as the Band is not part of the 1st Battalion and the music is essentially for entertainment rather than a direct connection to battle. Developed for The Royal Marines by Pearl Instruments, and first used by them in April 2012, the drums recently introduced to 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards Corps of Drums are Pearl Viscount Military Snare Drums (Twin Snare - top and bottom snares fitted) and Pearl Viscount 28 inch x 12 inch Bass Drum, each with hand-painted enamel and 24 carat gold leaf Regimental emblazonment under three coats of clear varnish. The fifes are Viscount Bb and Fb keyed flutes.

Do the guys in the corps of drums have some previous musical experience or are just picked some way and ordered to do this job?

+Aleksi S They are not required to be accredited and certified musicians like the members of the Regimental Bands. Firstly they are members of a Platoon within the respective 1st Battalion of their Regiment. As such they are combat deployable soldiers first. They volunteer for and receive training in drumming/flute/bugle/cymbals/bass drumming if accepted to the Corps of Drums. Obviously if they possess skill with any of these instruments, they stand a better chance of acceptance by the head of the Platoon, the Drum Major. Like any part of the Army, career advancement, personalities (!), promotion, workplace location, family commitments, reality of the posting, timing, can lead to considerable turnover in most cases.

GrenadierGuardsDmr Thanks for the answer. :) I would like also ask is it a though process if someone wishes to be a drum major some day? I understand that he should have skills in ceremonial, leadership and of course to be a excellent infantry soldier. Greetings from Finland! Hopefully we could see at least one of the Guards Bands and Corps of Drums here some day. :)

Excepting the Appointment (it is an Appointment rather than a rank) of Drum Major, all members of the Corps of Drums are referred to as "Drummer". For example, the cymbalist is a "Drummer". The current role of the Corps of Drums Platoon of 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards is clearance - demolition and removing obstacles for operations. Other regimental Corps of Drums have other roles. Leading this platoon is the Drum Major whose primary role is operational readiness of the Platoon and all associated skills. Drummers must attain the rank of Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) to be appointed Drum Major. Some senior Drum Majors are later removed from their respective 1st Battalions and moved to Household Division Drum Major, leaving combat duties and concentrating on ceremonial only. Ceremonial duties in London District are performed on rotation with the other Regimental Corps of Drums (Coldstream, Irish and Welsh Guards - Scots Guards now disbanded). For 2013 to 2015, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards performed London Ceremonial with 1st Battalion Welsh Guards. Currently Colddstream and Irish Guards are providing London ceremonial.

I'm guessing that the battle honours on the drums would be the same as those on the Colours, but I see in the video that you mention that only some of them are on the drums. So in case they are too many to fit, they would have to be "ranked" somehow?

I have two questions. What did they say at the end? Something about escort. And I know usually two guards run to the front. What does it mean?

Thank you. The Chapel Royal, to the right of this Friary Court ceremony, and the Queen's Chapel on the opposite side of Marlborough Road, both part of the St James's Palace precinct, conduct services on Sunday morning. The accompanying bands/corps of drums do not play on Sundays until on The Mall and out of earshot.
