I'm a retired builder, yes people underestimate the amount of damage we do to our bodies lifting heavy objects everyday, I said to my accountant once, I can claim depreciation on my work vehicle, I can claim depreciation on my tools , but how come I can't claim depreciation on my body in my tax returns, my body is the most valuable thing to me , and its irreplaceable, if my body is deteriorating because of my work, I should be able to get a tax deduction for it, what do others think ?
@SublimeWanderers2 жыл бұрын
The people making these rules have never done any physical labor. Certainly none after the age of 20. They'll never understand what you just said. On the other hand, they own and drive cars, so they'll benefit from that rule. I think you're absolutely right. Unfortunately, that would require that we start respecting the knowledge and skill trades people have instead of treating the trades like a consolation prize for not being an academic. Quick note. I am a relatively young tradesman who switched to carpentry after being an English teacher. The number of people who think I'm kinda dumb before realizing that I'm actually well educated, and often more "classically educated" (I took Latin, I have read many of the classic of western literature)than they are, is astounding. Even nice people assume you work trades because you couldn't hack it in school, and not that you just have different preferences. I understand why they think that, but it is disappointing.

@@SublimeWanderers yes I know exactly what you mean, one of my clients was a lawyer, he told me one of his lawyer friends was doing an apprenticeship as a carpenter, because he wanted to do something different than law, something more satisfying, he was already 50 so money wasn't an issue , he just wanted to build things. I read about another young lawyer here in Australia, where I'm from , who took 12months out to travel the world, when he returned, he said he couldn't go back to an office to work , so he started a tree felling business, he said he couldn't be happier. I've heard people say tradesmen charge too much, I say if you think you are smarter than me because you have a degree, then why did you call me , fix it yourself. I say do what makes you happy.
@Khaab002 жыл бұрын
@@kingdomfor1 very well said. People don’t seem to understand that the labor fee is not just for the work, it’s also for the experience. They think because they watched a KZbin video or a home renovation show and it looked easy that it should be cheap. It only appears easy because of the years of experience behind it. There are a ton of college graduates but not many tradesmen left. Law of supply and demand states that tradesmen should actually be charging more than they currently do. We need less white collar and more blue collar workers.

Used to design residential landscaping & my stone masons from Centeal America were theee best co-worker/artisans I ever had the pleasure of working with. I would spray paint an outline of the patio, walkway, retaining wall, steps for whatever hardscape material I bought (brick, flagstone, etc) & they would craft the most professionally perfectly crisp finished product. Made my designs look so good! And clients were so pleased. Worked in all weather, never said no, were willing to move boulders around to my liking for best finished look. I know they weren’t getting paid enough or had benefits. I wish our country could take care of workers better. One guy had a heart condition & his wife came to work with him every day & did the work too: selecting rock, trimming it, placing it carefully into the patio or sidewalk (true skill & strength there)! I miss working with them on days I’m stuck with fools. Masons rock!

Joe Lstiburek has an excellent series "The Perfect Wall" outlining this from an engineers perspective. (And Meandering about to berate Architects who forget function in their quest for form :) So, getting back to Neil, in the US we do aim for an air cap and expect the shething to breathe. As for the pipe/conduit, I can't say... It does seem like it would be more dificult with on, but it put past anyone to imagine it being "the next guys problem".
