I have been “training” since 1984, when I left the farm and joined the Infantry. Now at 58 I still weigh the same I did at the end of basic (160ish) and I think I’m stronger. To be honest I have never trained (for strength) seriously. I have spent 38 years doing general conditioning. I started programmed barbell training 2 years ago and really enjoy it in addition to all the other work I do. My goals are life driven, like keeping up with my kids. While I never will be a monster, I follow you because your advice works and is scalable to my personal goals. But mostly I follow you because you are so damn welcoming, real and nonjudgmental.

I was a farm kid on small dairy farm, carried 10k bales a year, worked as a sewer and water labor, and pile drive, wrestled a lot of concrete and iron. Never really lifted seriously, but have always enjoyed the sport of lifting and strongman.

Started training in 1967 for football. Got real serious when I went into the Marine Corps in 1976. Still powerlifting, bodybuilding, metabolic conditioning, with barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells and resistance bands besides body weight exercises (pushups, air squats and a host of others) we are looking at over 52 years training. I am now 70 yrs. old. and train every day except Sunday.

I haven't lifted hard in a decade. When I was lifting, I did about 6 years of serious lifting and competed in power lifting. Now, I just bought THE MINIMALIST PROGRAM! New father. 12 hour shifts. I went w/ the minimalist. I can't wait to get in the best shape of my life, and just maybe get my big lifts back, but even if I just get close to what I did before and be in better all around shape and more explosive, I'll be happy. Starting this week. Wish me luck!

My age comes into the equation. Earlier in life I was that skinny, shy dude, who was awkward, wore glasses, and was scared talking to girls...I was that guy you probably laughed at. My wife told me to get in the gym, so I did it by age 22 (yes I had a wife even though I had a hard time with girls not with her) but I trained as a powerlifter from age 38 to 42 and set all my (still today) 1 RM's...but fast forward & I am 62, and my focus is totally on living the best life I can at 62 yrs old. God bless you for your messages & motivation, it's much appreciated.

30 yo. Stepped into the gym when i was 15. Started seriously training at 22 when i joined the local olympic weightlifting team. Had to quit at 25 due to financial difficulties of the club and we had to shut it down (long story short), if i could i d still be doing that. I did go back to commerical gyms for a couple of years but i had to stop due to personal issues. At 29 (28?) in the middle of the pandemic i picked up sandbags for the 1st time, and thats how i found the channel, cause i had no idea how to pick up sandbags. Right now i am back at a commercial gym and trying to get my groove back. I do feel that i left stuff unfinished and i want to get better and stronger than ever before. I am more determined today than when i was at 22.

I did and I kept going with it. I didn't get into strongman till four or five years ago. I started training for a strongman competition at that point, hurt my back for a fourth time since wrestling and decided to not do a strongman competition and just stick being healthy and fit but I still utilize strongman aspects

I took training very seriously in my first year of lifting with a deadlift goal in mind, which I smashed and then continued until I burned myself out. I then took my training less seriously and am happy where I am. Not so much about numbers now, more about a healthy mind and body and if my numbers go up and I feel good in a t-shirt then that’s a bonus.

First off. out of all the strongmen out there, you were the one to light the fire under my ass and do strongman training. I trained seriously for about 2 years and got strong. March 2021 I got surgery on my left knee (meniscus tear) work related injury. And after losing all that strength, I can’t find that fire again. I still work out. But with the pain I get in my knee weather it’s sitting to long, working to hard, or soreness from squatting or DL. I’m worried that I may re injure it and so I think that plays into the loss of fire.. I’m glad your back buddy. Always love the videos!

A buddy and I just finished your power builder strongman, and we loved it. My wife just finished the mass builder and her numbers went up across the board. More importantly I’ve watched her closely. I would say my training has been split up into 3 phases. 25 years total, I started at 12yo for football all the way up to 23yo after Arena football, but the focus was always on sports and using strength training to help that. Then I started coaching as a strength coach and competing in Weightlifting for the next 10 years, but most of that time was experimenting training styles on myself and weightlifting was just a hobby that I would do if there were any local meets. The last 4 years I have been all-in on strongman and Highland games. It's fun looking back at my own training evolution, if you will, knowing that at 37yo I'm still finding ways to challenge myself and get stronger. Great question man!

And finally, overhead press 100lb. Maybe my view is just distorted by social media?

You are still young and have many many years ahead of you. This is my opinion if I was still 14 and in your shoes. I wouldn't worry about any 1 rep maxes right now and only focus on technique of the main lifts and conditioning work.
