Great video. 04 xB here manual. I like watching these videos even though there's only a slim chance ill ever do me own brakes

@17:48 the star wheel adjuster arm is actually installed wrong. if you look carefully it has double notches staggered and that should face inward towards hub/dust shield .the first notch catches the brake shoe and the second notch actually holds the auto self adjuster in place. This is what prevents the self adjuster vertical arm with tab from running away out of alignment when the auto adjustment star / gear wheel starts clicking against it. The same applies for the opposite side of the adjuster wheel arm which has a bigger notch to hold the parking brake arm secure in place to prevent "walking" The brakes will never self adjust as installed in this video and might actually throw off the shoe alignment during braking. To confirm this have the brake shoe on bench before install and then position the adjuster arms accordingly. You'll see why the notches exist and line up as stated. Ensure the adjuster star wheel is fully unscrewed and anti-seize is installed on the threads and the the opposite end that slides on. This will ensure smooth movement of the star wheel mechanism and save some aggravation in the future. There are also lube points on the hub face where shoe makes contact that were missed and should be brushed with brake grease / anti-seize. The main shoe springs are separated by color - Green is passenger side rear and yellow is drivers side rear.. Raybestos H2343 is the kit you need for the rear drum job (i'd stick with oem toyota wheel adjuster if you can re-use it)

Stated another way.......each end of the adjuster has a "fork" with 2 legs. The front fork should have the longer leg facing toward the inside edge of the car. The rear fork should have the shorter leg (with the deeper depression) inward.....toward the inside of the car.

I just did mine right now and I tried to do the old school self adjust method but it didn’t work so I took the drum back off and manually spun the gear to adjust the brake pedal pressure and now the car has a better feeling pedal and the car stops much faster than it did before the adjustment. My front brakes are brand new as well so now this little car is good for a while. I just bought it a week ago and I did the valve cover gasket and starter.

I did everything and when I went to assemble the drum it didn’t fit I tried to adjust the adjuster but the drum still doesn’t fit do you have any advice?

I was told M12 but not sure of the thread pitch. Oh, another commenter says 8mm 1.25. That sounds more like it.

@@westhavenor9513 I use M8 x 1.25, length of 30mm on my Scion xA and Lexus ES300(rear e-brake shoes). Both Toyotas. Same bolt can be used for leverage to tighten alternator belt on Scion. There's a threaded hole on alternator bracket for it.

@@blakewade8697 if my recollection is correct, either 12 or 14mm bolts. And they do not replace the studs

Your video made me realize that I can can replace my own brakes also. I'd choose to bleed all my brake lines after I'd replacing the rear shoes though. Over time, brake fluid tends to break down and gets contaminated so it's good practice. Thanks for your helpful video. The front disc brakes are probably a little more complicated to replace.
@LujinCustom2 жыл бұрын
All great except for the very end. Brake fluid is hygroscopic and thanks to condensation, moisture is introduced into the lines. Also, heat degrades the fluid over time and brakes get hot. It’s good to have some one pump up the brakes and mash em. Then crack the bleeder open slightly. Once, per side, should be enough. Watch all the crud and dirty fluid come out.
