Just did rear drums on a 2006 HHR. Had the big W shaped spring. The right spring tool made it a lot easier.

Great Video Couldn't Hear You Due to Noisy Back Ground. Had to watch over and over. Other than That Grrreat Video. Thanks

Question. To adjust the wheel-preset adjuster. There is a rubber boot on the backing plate you can remove to gain backside access to the adjuster wheel using a blade type tool or flat blade screwdriver for adjustment. . On the driver's side, it seems you spin the wheel teeth "up" from the backside....to bring the 2 shoes closer together or "narrower". Is it the same on the passenger side?.....or would spinning it "up" cause the shoes to get further-apart from one another? Bascially asking if there is a reverse-thread pitch on the passenger side to make things act the same?...or not?

The "teeth" are directional to the side that it's on. So yes.. if one side is up to tighten... the opposite side is the other way to tighten. That's why you can't mix up the springs.. they are side dependent.

@@dennismelville7532 ...no.....since writing what I did, I actually worked on the car to find out for myself...and in either case, ...on either side....backside "up" = narrower. That said, yes, they are side dependent as to parts used.

@@TheWilferch Kool, I haven't worked on one yet.. was just going off of other Toyota's that when you go up and hear the "click".. that the opposite side would have to go down to hear the click.. or outward adjustment. So the good news is that the adjuster can work on either side if it's the same "up" position to spread the adjuster.

@@dennismelville7532 ...the reason I posted the question originally, was to hopefully get first-hand experience answers, just to be clear on my original intent. That said, whatever thread pitch or possible reverse thread that MAY be used on one side or the other.....for a Scion xA the backside tooth adjustment "up" causes a narrowing of the original drum spacing, on either side. If someone's car looks to be different, or simply to confirm what I found on my car, would love to hear people's findings.

@TheWilferch 😒 ok... sorry for just I interjecting a different view.... but it seems like you answered your original question with your own observation.

What about adjusting it I don’t understand. To adjust with screwdriver is it up or down and what about when you put the drum back on don’t you have to spin it to check if it moves freely?

I attempted to do the rear brakes on my Scion Xa twice. What a bleeping disaster. I replaced the wheel cylinder and decided to test it by firing up the engine and pressing down on the brake pedal. Since the drum wasn't on - one of the pistons went shooting to the side and then brake fluid was leaking-I panicked and had it towed to my mechanic. Then there's the problem once you get the whole mess back together - it was hard for me to figure out - do I shove it to the side or what to get the drum back on. So about 4 months ago, tired of the embarrassing roll/squeak, I paid to have them done. All new hardware, shoes and drums. Four months later, it has started doing the whole - roll, roll, squeak thing again! 283,000 miles on this baby and they're all mine. Drum brakes are evil. I did all four rotors and pads on our 2016 Expedition and it was very easy. I hate, hate, hate drum brakes. Getting the holding springs back on, aiming the adjuster, knowing whether which way the bottom one inch spring should go...can really make you feel dumb. The video ends without telling you how to adjust the new shoes to where they should be and trying to rotate the adjuster - lift up the metal piece with a screwdriver while trying to rotate the adjuster...I promise you - just pay someone else to do your drum brakes. I'll do my own disk brakes - love those things but never ever will I touch drum brakes again!

Oh man. Feel your pain. Luckily I grew up in the 70's when drum brakes were common, so learned how to do them on my VW Bus. It was painful for sure, but now they're not so bad to do, especially on the Scion. Everything is tiny and the little springs are easy to get on and off.

Absolutely agree and oddly enough also feel this way on MY OWN 2005 xA with the rear drum brakes and 286,000 trouble-free miles. Ended up trashing 2-3 sets of cylinders too, as I tried to get everything "held together" ( you need 5 hands !) and then you lose control of the "tab" on the shoe....it breaks free of spring tension while doing this... and the tab tears up the rubber dust boot of the cylinder.... needing yet ANOTHER cylinder. Then.... trying to undo the hard brake line on the cylinder, the nut turns with the hard line and IT breaks too.....time to add new hard-brake lines !! Drum brakes are the work of the Devil and discs would be infinitely better to deal with !!!

So for the self adjustment bar you spin it to close it because the shoes are thicker I get that but after it’s installed do we drive in reverse and apply the brakes to allow it to self adjust?

Great lesson--thank you. I forgot that drum brakes need a dab of brake lube where they contact the backing plate. Too bad about the heater noise--otherwise a great video!

I can't believe this video was made 4 months ago, the video quality sucks, must have used a brick to record this and that heater is loud as fuck 🤣 otherwise, good info

I would NOT recommend clamping the brake hose unless you WILL be bleeding the brakes. If the internal spring in the cylinder pushes out the pistons enough, they will suck in air past the piston cup seal. While this will prevent accidentally blowing out the cylinder with the brake pedal, it can cause unexpected problems. Just be cautious and careful. Experience makes this much easier. Watch as many drum brake videos as you can PRIOR to attempting to do this yourself. You'll learn all sorts of tricks and tips as well as things to watch out for, or simply not do.
