this video genuinely helps with my argument that past generations were not as good as people on Twitter try to make it seem. and no, before that one commenter tries to reply and say "oh, are the idols not going through enough hate for your liking?" no, im not saying that. but I feel so uncomfortable with kpop stans trying to make it seem like the past generations were SOOOO much better than the current generation (solely because male and female idols "could" interact even though they really couldnt if you look at the track record of female-male interactions) when this is one of the MANY times a female idol had to go through so much because she simply existed. I hope kpop stans get out of that mindset because its just not it.

I've lived in Seoul since 1992 and have a few decades of music industry experience here, and can confirm what you've noted...in many ways, tabloid papers (primarily daily sports newspapers, w/full-color 1st page) were even worse than a lot of Twitter banter in the pre-internet era in particular, since they had next to no means to be checked and reprimanded, and could easily jab you in the back even after doing a promotional interview a week prior...and suing for libel could potentially blacklist you in both printed media and even on TV mags like 연예가중계. It was basically the wild west of yellow journalism, and management agencies often had to thread the needle while treading lightly with their already dubious shenanigans, knowing that they were powerless when a testy reporter wanted to write up crap, or even just post a very unsightly photo with something neutral. They were essentially the origin of the 기레기/giregi (Korean portmanteau for "trash reporter") that continued their garbage years later on.

Just one correction at 1:40 . Kang Suji and her styling 100% yes... but the lukewarm response to the promotion of Lee Jiyun's 3rd album put her way out of the market picture by summer 1992, which is why *Lee Jiyun was never actually pushed in the press as a rival of Ha Soo-Bin* WITHIN the industry, by the time that the latter had debuted. And unlike the sleek, J-pop-influenced production that Yoon Sang was able to present Kang Suji's first two albums with, Lee Jiyun's repertoire by that time was still stuck in the 1980s in comparison, making it all the more easier for the very light and poppy production on Ha Soo-Bin's debut album by (folk singer) Ye Min and her pretty/tall looks to slip into the newer post-Seo Taiji trends of that were going on that year.
