He is a minister has to say positive things. Every small thing is over amplified. But reality is India is not doing anything in semiconductor or AI innovation. Only thing we have done well is IT services and Services exports have done well and has immense potential to grow if India can produce good talent in larger numbers. If we can achieve $1 trillion Services exports by 2030, govt will get more finances to do more things. We have long long way to go and really nothing in semi conductor or AI. Most of the semi conductor firms have moved to Malayasia incuding NVDIA, infineon , TSMC , ASML etc. Not one major firm has come to India for semi conductor production. India has paid $15 billion for getting outdated 28 nm tech which really wont generate much returns for decades.

Yeah the market isn't big. Goal to being self reliant is about ability to support local actors in the face of competition from outsiders. But india doesn't have enough local actors to lift up the initiative. Outsiders will not going to opt for india made chip for their products. Smartphone chips are less likely will be sourced from india. Same with chips for TV, laptop, Tablet, smartwatch, Set top box, high end product etc. So only industry that would buy india made chips are automotive industry, electrical appliance industry. But with limited local actors(tata, mahindra, force, layland) their consumption of chips isn't enough to elevate india semiconductor industry. But it at least give india some self reliant advantage. MNCs like Suzuki, Toyota, Hyundai etc would likely import most of their chips bcus their chip suppliers are mostly operate outside of india.

I think this is an exaggeration. While Malaysia and Thailand have advantages in manufacturing higher value electronics, India has a more complete ecosystem from chemicals and mining to fabs even if the fabs are of 2000s generation. India will also be the go to place for data centers in Asia, though there is going to be tough competition from the gulf countries especially the UAE, as they have abundance of land and energy. But states like Gujarat, UP, Assam and Rajasthan can be the answer to compete with the UAE. Indian billionaires and IT firms need to get into the data center space in a massive way.

Sophistication of steel has progressively increased and now India has access to some of the highest grade steel. So technically higher grade chemicals are possible using existing chemicals manufacturing ecosystem. Also, Japan is a friendly country and JVs between japanese and indian companies are very possible. The initial manufacturing R&D has to come from pro government billionaires like Adani, Jindal etc. under a public-private partnership model. I do not see anything preventing India from elevating to higher grade chemicals, as happened in steel sector.

USA under Trump will push manufacturing in America for years they basically force TSMC to manufacture in locally. 2. China under sanction goes full in into R&D and already reach full scale for 7nm chip estimate only4-5 years behind the latest high end chip. India been talking about manufacture chip for years but no yet produce result so even if now India want to start it mostly too late as 1. USA won`t be needing India chip anymore instead if India can produce result they will get sanction instead and when it USA it mean all their allies country. 2. China once manage to produce will flood the market making India chip can`t compete at all unless India can ramp up even cheaper production.
