“Colonel, do you see those colors?” “Then take them!”

"Colonel, do you see those colors? Well, take them!" Of all the many, many heroic vignettes to come from those three days, the story of the 1st Minnesota has always been way up there with The 6th Wisconsin and the 20th Maine.

Slaughtered. 262 men that went in to battle, 47 walked away unharmed. 215 men were either killed or wounded and the regiment suffered a casualty rate of 82% by some accounts.

Hancock asked for 5 min they bought him 15 pushing 1,400 under Wilcox 75 yards. Those 47 were richly rewarded with the opportunity to help defend against Pickett's charge the very next day. The were joined by I believe it was about 100 of their comrades who had been detached on the second day.

When I was little and playing soldier, I used an upside-down trash can for my 'drum'. I thought I invented that drum cadence but I guess not.

This regiment was practically annihilated at Gettysburg.

Not practically. It was annihilated. I think less than 40 returned to Union lines.
