Hawkwind are actually back oot on Tour and I'm due to see them next week. They have had their Ups and Doons but that's been 55 Years they have been on the go. Also check Hawklords. Hawkwind had to change their name to Hawklords temporarily for Legal reasons in 77/78ish and did One LP. Later in 2011 Ex members of Hawkwind reformed the band and are still touring. Check "Motorway City", "Valium 10", "Reefer Madness" or "Brainbox Pollution".

@@playitagainsue Ta, I will. There are a lot of Related bands worth checking as well. Inner City Unit who are much Punkier. Nik Turner (Sax) played with them until they moved on and became Krankschaft. Try Inner City Unit "World Of LSD", "Blue Rinse Haggered Robot" (about Maggie Thatcher), "Amyl Nitrate" (Punky Ska) or mi Fave, "Paradise Beach", the track to be Driving up to a Free Festival.

I was lucky enough to get this before it was banned as I was already into the band and would buy their albums and singles on the day of release. I managed to see them back in April this year on what is possibly Dave Brocks last ever tour (he's now in his 80's and had to take time out during the set several times sitting on the side lines).

Bob Calvert vocals on this song He was the original vocalist on Silver Machine but they were awful so Lemmy done them. One of the members of the group was raided by the bomb squad pulling up the floorboards. A song that you may enjoy is Levitation which had Ginger Baker on drums kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z160dqOInNhsqa8

Been covered a few times. Mudhoney and Primal Scream did it. The punks were well into Hawkwind, so were the grunge bands. They played with another proto-punk group at the time, the equally wild Pink Fairies (check out City Kids). Space is Deep is a good Hawkwind track to react to.

I tried to type several tracks from all of their early albums up to Chronicles of the Black Sword, but each time I was still typing by the end of the video and it moved on to your next one, wiping all I'd written. So, the following is just a quick idea. If you check out each of the Albums released up to 1985, you'll get a fantastic view of their career. Later albums are also worth checking out. Try Magnu & Golden Void from the Warrior on the Edge of Time album, or Orgone Accumulator and Born to Go from their Space Ritual Album.

They are sort of a missing link between garage influenced rock and punk. Also being associated with the new age travelers made them influencial to the outlaw rave scene in the 90s

The song was banned by the BBC (And still is banned in the UK today) In early 1973 an anarchist faction called `The Angry Brigade` sent a series of Letter Bombs to prominent people including British Home secretary Robert Carr. Hawkwinds Lead Singer of the time, Bob Calvert, styled himself as an `Anarchist` and penned the song. Amazingly the groups record label `United Artists` released it. Though banned it still made the lower reaches of the UK top 50. Calvert was quite an unstable man. On one infamous occasion in New York, he once pursued the rest of the Band (Who had tried to leave their hotel without him) wielding a huge Samurai sword. Along with Paul McCartney/Wings "Give Ireland Back to the Irish" "Urban Guerrilla" is completely banned by mainstream UK media outlets.

Yeah the band was based in Ladbroke Grove the nexus for squatters, anarchists etc

@@playitagainsue On Mainstream UK media it still is banned. There were waves of Terrorism sweeping Western Europe in that era, with the Bader-Meinhoff group perhaps the most notorious. A hard-line outfit in the UK titling themselves the `Angry Brigade` instigated a `Letter Bombing` campaign in late 1972 and early 1973. Most notable target recipient of their `attentions` was the then UK Government Home Secretary Rt Hon Robert Carr. It was very serious stuff. Old Lemmy got his IRA memory a bit skewed as their mainland campaign was in 1974 targeting my region of the UK, namely Birmingham in the Summer that year. Bob Calverts identifying with the likes of the `Angry Brigade` got an instant ban on the record. As with `Give Ireland Back to the Irish` and Lennons `Luck of the Irish` UK media a total no-go, even today.

Wow great selection Interesting your take on this song being forerunner to Punk It does have same feel as Stooges : Search and Destroy And of course Lemmy’s next band Motörhead were adopted by the punk movement and Ace of Spades was included on many a punk compilation. The IRA connection was unfortunate but it wasn’t composed in a vacuum and was reflection of the time

Hi Sue .. Musically, this is a pretty good song, and I agree with your impressions of the styles involved in it .. But I can well understand how it came to be banned by the BBC .. I'm a pretty big believer in free speech, but this song is pretty lyrically explicit in its subject about a bomb-maker and his intentions .. And any type of song or spoken word that appears to advocate for actual violence is wading into dangerous territory .. But nice reaction, as always.

I was afraid you were going to show the promo video that came with this. Lots of likes but YT might take a dim view...footage of Stacia dancing... Follow up single to Silver Machine but 'torpedoed' by aa mainland bombing campaign by the IRA...and they are not cool ! Nik Turner is 'honking' away on his sax at the end there. Shot Down in The Night was a single liffted from the Live 79 album. Different again. Huw Lloyd Langton back on guitar and Harvey Bainbridge on Bass, and it's a cover (Steve Swindells song) but sounds like the Hawks in full flight. There was angst in music (Animals 'Got to Get Out of This Place') in other genres but this was more of a Bob Calvert thing than Hawkind's (songs like High Rise and 25 years.) Mick Farren (another of the Ladbroke Grove set like Hawkwind (I'm a Police Car') was another one but Bob was also on the 'spaceship' too! And then there was Man from S.Wales getting the social comments in ('Hard Way to Die' and others) Calvert also Recorded a concept album 'Captain Lockheed and The Starfighters' about the imfamous Starfighter jet fighters that the Germans had bought . Your old Bonzo pal Viv Stanshall (tall blonde one) was among the caste.

No- Mainland Bombing by IRA was 1974. The Song was actually inspired by late 1972/ early 1973 `Angry Brigade` campaign of sending Letter Bombs to prominent personalities including then Home secretary Robert Carr.
