"Damnation Alley" is a book by SF author Roger Zelazny. In the book, there has been a nuclear war and the hero goes on a drive across post-armageddon America to deliver a consignment of anti-radiation serum. He drives in an "8-wheeled anti-radiation tomb", as Calvert sings in the song. The lyrics to this song are written with Calvert's (RIP) customary wry humour, referencing Dr. Strangelove (the classic 1960s anti-war movie), the sky "raining fishes" and the devastation of cities as the hero drives across America. "Thank you Dr. Strangelove /For going doolally/And leaving me the heritage of damnation alley" indeed. Anyway, a great reaction - so glad you have gone down the Hawkwind rabbit hole. But be warned - it's very, very deep. :) Thanks for reacting to Hawkwind!

@@playitagainsuethank you. I will indeed check out the other Hawkwind song you reacted to! If you want another recommendation, one of my faves is "We Took The Wrong Step Years Ago" from the 1971 album "In Search of Space". It's an environmental warning about humans destroying the planet, which sadly nobody seems to have heeded. All the very best to you and good luck with the channel!

Hawkwind are my favourite band of all time. The variety of musicians and styles they have included on their 35 studio albums and numerous live ones from 1970 to present day (the latest album came out in 2023 and another is due in 2024) are just amazing.

Hawkind has been around with various members since 1969. They tend to reinvent themselves every few years, but always stick to their core of literary and cultural references. I have been a fan of theirs since the late 1970s, and still am. --Dan

Many people who played with Hawkwind came and went on a revolving door kind of basis. Robert Calvert had been in and out of the band for years, but he is credited with writing Silver Machine(which Lemmy sang). You are right with the pink stuff. About this time punk was in the forefront of British music and John Lyndon often stated that without Hawkwind, there would be no Sex Pistols. Similarly, you will hear some keyboards that remind you of The Stranglers. As a note, off to see Hawkwind next month

Adrian Shaw on bass. The great Simon King on drugs, I mean drums. Simon House on Keys and violin. Your reference to Flash Gordon is correct. Bob Calvert (Vocals and lyrics) Used to dress up as character from the songs and yes, he went doolaly. Hawkwind recorded a lot of things live in the studio at this time. There is a recording of Bob singing "this is the one" before they rehearsed the song.

For early Hawkwind, I recommend Brainstorm from their first album - Doremi Farso Latido - and Master of the Universe from the In Search of Space album. They also did a concert called The Chronicle of the Black Sword, which was released on VHS (and maybe later on DVD, I don't know). But it's available as 16 clips on KZbin (between 2 and 6 mins each) here - kzbin.info/aero/PLoIDt_C5y1LvZ1J_Yr7bgxri9k4ql0W-8

Always look forward to getting home from work around 5pm and seeing what your listening to on the day, but Hawkwind, now we're talking, my favourite band of all time. Have seen this band 18 times all over England and Wales from 1973 onwards. The singer and lyricist is Bob Calvert on this album. That's the beauty of Hawkwind your going to hear just about every sound under the sun... and the universe. Can I recommend Nuclear Drive, it has a Silver Machine vibe to it. And talking of Pete Shelley and Kraftwerk... hint hint 😉. Keep em coming 👍

'Ole Audiophile to Sue: You managed to effectively stumble into one of our favorite albums, amazing in itself. I'm impressed you made it through, that took some listening talent. Most listeners are much to much in a rush for a rush. This whole album proved effective over time, it aged like fine wine. That was probably Dave Brock singing, Lemmy did not join up until after the second album was released. That's a wild story all by itself worth looking up. As a hardcore Hawkwind fan from way back I'll offer this tidbit. Most of us did not know who Lemmy was until he quit. He formed Motorhead which led to a bit of a riff among some Hawkwind fans. My theory is there's always room for more in great music sources. Thanx

@@playitagainsue There's a ton of stuff out there that takes some serious patience to listen through to the brilliant end. This songs pretty much a good example of that. Plus you effectively waded through the heavy instrumental, what many listeners find objectable. If you've that sort of patience, I'd say you'd be well off trying out a bit of Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The song that immediately comes to mind is Earth Hymn, This song takes 4 minutes to break so be patient. Thanx. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4HTc3uam9WBe5I

Bob Calvert on vocals, slightly insane lead singer who had a big influence on the band in the late 70's - Hawkwind took a new wave direction after 1976, slightly ahead of fashion, before going in 101 directions in the 1980's. My nan used to say doolally, means going crazy, what a great lyricist Bob was. This is my favourite album from my number one group, note my username (also inspired by early Ultravox, who were one of many groups who have been inspired by Hawkwind, maybe try Hiroshima Mon Amour to react to). The Nuclear Drive suggestion's a good one - another 5 years on, but I'd play it with Star Cannibal which follows on on the album. Then the next jump could be Sword of the East from Xenon Codex, then Right to Decide from 1992's Electric Tepee, then Phetamine Street from Distant Horizons. Hawkwind are a very prolific group!

I stated in the comment section on your previous Hawkwind review that they are my all-time favorite group. They have been around for over 50 years with quite a few musicians passing through their ranks. I would have to say the late Rob Calvert was my favorite vocalist. I agree that you should check out the song "You'd Better Believe It", which is my favorite song by the group, off of my favorite album, "Hall of the Mountain Grill", which in my humble opinion is their best work. I have been into their music since the early 1970s and I am a devoted fan. The "Quark" album is one of my favorites. Another great song to review is "Master of the Universe". The best version is off of the Do re mi" album. Also, a great album to review would be their live "Space Ritual". I'm happy to hear that you appreciate their musical talent and creativity.

I first saw Hawkwind play at a small local venue before they released Silver Machine, the song that opened them up to a wider audience. For a while during the 1970's they did some collaboration with Sci Fi writer Micheal Moorecock ( check out 'Sonic Attack'). They were very much in the forefront of what was to become electronic music, much of the equipment they used being built by a band member, and have always gone their own way. An all time favourite band of mine. footnote, Quark, Strangeness and Charm is a quantum physics reference.
