The Wandering Warrior

Күн бұрын

Wow guys! I got my first real taste of arnis / Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) linking up with my folks in metro Manila. As you can see in the matches, I've got potential and a whole lot of refinement and learning to do. I'm truly blessed to be able to hang with and spar these guys...
Our sparring for the night included:
Fixed feet - hand, hand to shoulder
1 Foot Planted - all targets except head
Moving - all targets, minimal grapple
00:00 Introduction
00:57 Elrik Jundis
04:02 Ipe Obejas
14:20 Raymundo Lucero
18:42 Closing thoughts
My gateway to all this is Elrik Jundis. He is a practitioner, teacher, and researcher of various FMA styles as well as Judo and Chinese Internal Martial arts. My brother is also someone who is a point of contact for foreigners visiting Philippines looking for FMA lessons.
Stay tuned for more! In the meantime...

Always a pleasure to see Ipe, Raymundo, & Elrik. Did Sonny spar? If there’s no mango shakes in the video, Sonny’s presence is dubious.

I'm not sure if Elrik and the guys explained the historical backgrounds of the stances as well as the rulesets that you have sparred in (maybe it did not make the cut in the edit or I skipped it in the video) but I'll comment what I know from being in the same community: 1. The no foot movement and only 1 foot moves ruleset - It has existed before as a tool to train hand awareness as well as hitting the opponent's hands, and is emphasized by some styles more than the others. However, it was recently popularized by the recent rise interest for historical Spanish saber fencing within the community. (Technically, it came from the Philippine HEMA community but since the HEMA community in the Philippines crosses-over heavily with the FMA community, they are almost one and the same). This is also a more "modern" development of the traditional competition ruleset which is known as the "arnis sa banko" (tr.: arnis on a bench) where two arnisadors fight on top of a long bench, so there isn't much lateral movement or overt footwork, if at all. Interestingly, "arnis sa banko" is a more "Luzon" thing. It is known in the Visayas, but the more famous arnis competition tradition in the Visayas are usually in an "arena" of sorts (search "sabong pit"/"sabongan"). 2. The very low stance - I don't know the exact origins of it, but some people have hypothesized that the styles which squat very low seem to be from the mountain communities, while the more upright ones are from the urban/plains communities. There are some styles which fit to this categorization, but there are also many that don't. In the modern context however, everyone learns from everyone so even the more "upright" styles now have techniques from when they need to squat. Some say it is a holdover from FMA's more south-east asian roots (especially with how Silat and Kuntao are very low) while the more upright blade techniques were learned from the Spanish. We can't travel back in time, so we can't know for sure.

The low stances used by Ipe are from classical Leyte methods. From his grandfather and from the late GM Andy Abrian whose method is preserved inside of RRK. With Ipe Being one of the top RRK practitions who specialized in Moro-Moro Orabes of GM Abrian. The planted leg sparring and one leg sparring are part of older methods in the Philippines. Documented in books and kept alive in stories of some elders. But I started using them as assessment tools after being introduced to them by Kalis Magani whose the top Manila expert on 19th century HEMA saber methods.
Traditional Chinese Boxing - context is SUPER important!
