I think the reason why Kung fu has failed to grow in comparison to other martial arts is that other Martial arts approach it in a competitive or sport aspect and therefore are more willing to share and compare in order to get better. Chinese Kung Fu from what I understand had military applications as body guards and escorts and so was tied to their life and livelihood. From that perspective you wouldnt wanna share techniques that are likely to get you killed or make it so your competition gets hired and not you. So there is that secret door guild mentality associated with how Kung Fu is taught.

It depends on which kung fu organisations etc There r too many kung fu styles And different styles within styles Many do lots of sparring But some don't do anything The problems is that Chinese powers that be wanted to replace Martial arts with. . Table tennis .. That was just b4 the founding of shotokan In the 1920s Many training methods got lost But r still done in other parts of Asia All muay Thai And Muay boran styles R derived from Chinese styles In Thailand they have merged shaolin with various styles of kung fu and Karate That's been happening for a few hundred years Living in the west We don't Get to learn what is really going on

I'd say that the issue one thing that is killing kung fu is the lack of real understanding, alot of bad practitioners of any martial art or combatives generally have no real understanding of thier craft, the only way to improve on this issue is meditation, self reflection and creative thoughts as well as good old fashioned pressure testing and sparring. I think that kung fu needs challenge fighting and the old fashioned style body conditioning and building that you used to see. honestly i've seen non kungfu practitioners try out even the most bazarre kinds of movements and they have worked very well, I think that martial arts in general needs better regulartory watch and scrutiny due to Mc dojo's and fake practitioners.

Thank you for responding to my comment! Yes, I also believe that 'crossing hands' dueling retains some good applicability to when arguments escalate into fist fights. IMO, Full Contact Crossed Hands Leitai could also be done competitively given the right environment and marketing - especially after Karate Combat was able to make a thing out of fighting in a literal pit. I would love to hear your thoughts about the King of Dragons (龍中之王) fight promotion in Taiwan where some TCMA guys have been mixing it up competitively recently. Another thought. I hear a lot of other folks opine about the prevalence of Japanese and Korean martial arts systems in the States, but they seem to forget that many of those styles were brought over by US Military servicemen stationed in Korea, Okinawa, or Japan. For TCMA, that US Military talent pipeline ended in 1979 after diplomatic relations were switched from the ROC to the PRC and US troops left Taiwan. Chinese immigration trends also started shifting pretty dramatically to arrivals from Mainland China starting in the 1990s, and their Taolu Wushu + Sanda tournament format has since somewhat displaced the earlier TW & HK TCMA Kuoshu Leitai tournaments. The Kuoshu Leitai rules remain a bit different than Sanda rules and you see some more traditional flair in their fights, but it's also a bit rarer, sadly.

Hello I can see that you researched. I came to same conclusion and have same dream. 59 years studying and working security using training I also cross trained however we emphasized fighting sparred a lot no pads or gloves we got hurt. Never reached high level though someone got hurt and stopped. But all through it I can tell something missing. I did sanda and Muay Thai BJJ jujitsu and more - although I wasn't a high level. My king fu helped me. Lot more then I thought forms kicked in here and there and I figured out added hitting grappling etc. I think the key to Kung fu- rebirth is promoting sanda and the lei tai fighting with safety of course introduce more arts techniques. Elevated MMA limited grappling

I just saw a Kung Fu demo....it was boring and slow like Tai Chi and some Wing Chung. I don't think they could defend themselves in a fight.

What you see in demos and forms is far from being the whole training. It's just the visible part of the iceberg.

@@Jenjak I know this. But most people today who practice Kung Fu have no interest in self defense training and just don't because they think it's super spiritual and deep and make excuses for why they can't fight or train students to be good at fighting.

@@Jenjak Most King Fu is practiced by weird people. Like new age hippies, nerds, super fat dudes, and chinophiles who literally want to turn into a Chinese. I hardly ever meet capable fighters who do Kung Fu. I know they exist and KZbin has stuff, but in real life it's weird. And the instructors never talk about actual combat stuff very often and mostly want to promote world peace and unity. It's so boring. I never see any of them spar. What's the point? To be fair Aikido is like this as well and the Karate and Taekwondo scenes have problems but at least they spar and Taekwondo is full contact.
Traditional Chinese Boxing - context is SUPER important!
