Underrated. Voice of a generation. Small minded people thought that because he wasn’t writing the songs. His harmonies are incredible. I was 15 and walking down a dirt alley in Lake City, FL listening to my little transistor radio the first time I heard "Sounds Of Silence". My two friends and I stopped right there and listened to the whole song. I can still see the alley in my mind, and still feel that "Mesmerized" feeling that we all three seemed to feel.

Much is made of the recent cover by Disturbed, which ain’t bad, at all-but I don’t think young people today understand the significance of the song to the culture, all those years ago, and how Simon and Garfunkel were just the perfect duo to deliver it.

@@AegisNova, you’re right, the youngsters today don’t grasp the context of when Simon & Garfunkel wrote & performed The Sound of Silence, because the kids live in their own context, and maybe most of them don’t always have the patience or desire to “get historical” and research the 20th century’s mid 1960’s Vietnam War and counterculture movement of that time. It’s also challenging for us Baby Boomers to grasp and understand their context.

As I age I am SOO thankful to have grown up with the incredibly fantastic music of the 50's, 60's & 70's. I don't know if there has ever been a musical revolution like this in human history or if there will again. I hope so. People deserve to experience what I did.

Their has been such a revolution before; we call it “classical”. Mozart was “The Beatles” of his day.

The 80's and 90's did it, too. The early 2000s were good, but that was more like an extension of the '90s. After that, it continued to morph, but seldom into anything that will stand the test of time or influence someone great. I was born in the mid-'80s, so I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to experience the music of the '90s and early 2000s. In my opinion, the '90s was the best because it brought a variety of new styles that were amazing, but I imagine most people feel that what they heard during their youth was the best.

when I was 13 years old (in 1968) I was hitchiking down Wilshire Blvd in LA on my way to the beach. Anyway, this guy walks up and starts hitchiking next to me and we started talking and had this great conversation about all sorts of stuff, ranging from politics and philosophy to music, and at some point he told me his name was Art. After about half an hour of not getting a ride, he said he was just going to walk to his destination and as we were saying our goodbyes he told me that if I had a chance I should turn on the TV that night because he was going to be on Channel5 or something. So I turned on the TV and it was a Simon and Garfunkel special.. For many years I thought I imagined the whole thing because why would Garfunkel be hitchiking in the middle of LA when he was a rock star? It seemed so unlikely. Then a few years ago I was reading an interview with Simon where he was talking about how difficult it was to do gigs with Garfunkel sometimes because he would do quirky things like hitchike to gigs. What a cool guy!

He's a beautiful guy, and he made me cry. Again. Thank you for this grand walk down memory lane and the new knowledge of how this man thinks. Also he has my hair :)

This is great! A goldmine of information! Thank you for this! My 25 year old daughter LOVES Artie. She went to his concert in Phx a few years back. I guess she was the youngest person there. (not surprising!)

Eschew the mainstream - if we wish to move ahead, to tread on different ground and not endlessly re-visit the familiar, we have to eschew the mainstream, well said Art.

What an elegant man with a lot to say about many things, such an interesting intelligent human, and I can't get enough of listening to him and Paul Simon harmonizing. A remarkable duo the world was lucky to hear.

My mother had all their albums and as a young child, I fell-in love with the musical poetry. I played those albums all my life. (Cannot tell you, how wonderful it was, that my mom never struck the song “Cecilia.” Hahaha) Love and appreciate this.
