Hate to the bearer of bad news, but that's not Russian or even a sniper rifle. That's a Romanian PSL, it was used as a DMR rifle simply because they just aren't that accurate and use the 7.62x54r, same round the Mosin Nagant uses. Bass Pro used to carry this round but its gotten a bit more scarce since much of the cheap surplus has dried up from the import bans with russia but it can still be found pretty cheap online. Also, that ammo is corrosive, make sure you break your rifle down and clean it out well with something like ballestol flooded down the barrel and gas tube or else your gonna have a bad time cleaning the rust out of rifle down the road.

Came here to say this. The only thing is for corrosive ammo just use a garden hose for 2 min, then a hair dryer. Make sure the gun is completely dry, then use CLP, Balistol, rem oil extra.

Since nobody else will say it, that is not a Dragunov. That is. Romanian PSL. It is very similar because whenever the USSR wanted Romania to make a version of their weapons, Romania pretty much always said, "Well yes... but no"

@boredvet That's not exactly true. Unlike many think, many weapons of russian or by extension Soviet Union members(including Romania) during the cold war were not inherently inaccurate or unreliable. That is just something that old fudd's and whoever will listen to them think because of their own opinions. If a weapon of any Soviet Union country was inaccurate or unreliable, it was user error or poor training, or a combination of both.

My guy finds a Romainan PSL for 3 Fucking Grand. Thats the cheapest I've ever seen them. The guy behind the counter says 7.62x54R is hard to find. 54R isn't really hard to find, most collectors sell it, you can find the ammo online for bulk , mainly surplus which the gun will run it perfectly fine. (its the same caliber as the Mosin Nagant, so think of it as a Semi auto mosin) Gun shows sell 54R a lot as well. The RifleLine branded boxes for ammo has 54R too. You will have to be careful with buying Surplus ammo because some of it, if not all, is corrosive so make sure you clean the gun after shooting it.

A couple things. 7.62x54R is made in the US but is still uncommon. Any ammo thats designed to beat armor has a small steel rod inside bullet. That ammo is way to hot for that rifle and could possibly damage the rifle.

The rim being torn is due to the shell being stuck in the chamber. The bolt tried to extract it, but the rim wasn't strong enough to pull the round out, and instead broke like you saw. This would've happened after the initial pressure and everything.. so it should be fine. Also, thermal expansion happens whenever you shoot any brass cased ammo. Also called fire forming.. not really a big deal, in this case I think you guys had it right that the possible extra powder is causing increased fire forming. Looking at the shell, you could also try just cleaning the chamber out, might just be gummy.

The 7.62x54r ammo made for machine guns (military use) is a little bit of a hotter round, (larger powder charge) after you shoot, the shell expands more therefore getting stuck in the chamber. The ejector is what ripped open the bottom of the case from the shell being stuck. If you buy standard 7.62x54r you won't have any issues with ejecting.

Also be sure to check “headspace” on that rifle, if it’s out of spec, it could cause that blow out backfire too.. there are several KZbin videos on how to use headspace gages. Always a good idea to check to avoid accidents
