For those who are wondering why it’s pronounced as E’z but spelled with “1z”. It’s a word play using mandarin, the numeric 1 is pronounced as “yī” (character: 一) in mandarin.

I was going to post this same thing! In Taiwan, where 1zpresso are based, Mandarin is the national language. And for those wondering, yes, many people also speak Taiwanese there as well. Plenty of folks in Taiwan speak 3 languages or more. Really smart people over there for sure. And super kind as well. GO TAIWAN !!! 🇹🇼 🇹🇼 🇹🇼

I have the J-Max and I couldn't be happier. I wanted a 'do it all' grinder that would allow me to brew with my Flair without frustration as well as drip and batch brews. Speed of grind was also something important to me. This thing absolutely chews through a 15g v60 dose. Even though this is an 'espresso focuses' grinder I'd say 60-80% of the time I use this for filter coffee. I didn't want two grinders for different jobs and so this for me is perfect. If you're just brewing filter others will be better, but if you're looking to do everything I can't recommend it enough.

It was a tough decision between J-Max and K-Max for me since I'm mainly having espresso but also do pour-over occasionally. It seems that K-Max has better tastes overall, but I was concerning whether its 22-micron adjustment is too wide for dialing in the espresso. Suddenly the K-Ultra came out with a slightly smaller step size and I went for it. Although I'm not a big fan of the handle design, I had no issue dialing in espresso with K-Ultra and found myself using it more often than Niche Zero because shots grinded by K-Ultra are generally having more vibrant taste notes and more stable (with less channeling). In my opinion, it just nailed the espresso, not mentioning it's already good at pour-over.

I can highly recommend the 1Zpresso JE-Plus for darker-roast Italian style espressi (mellifluous, warm, bitter, etc.). Most people not too familiar with espresso prefer that kind (in my experience), so I tend to gravitate towards it when making espresso for family or guests, and I myself have also gotten used to that style, and consequently even prefer the JE-Plus to the J-Max. This might be partly due to the difficulty of getting good light-roast espresso beans in my region though, so take my experience with a grain of salt. One word in favor for the Max, would be that I fairly often find myself frustrated with the JE-Plus's imprecision. Great video! Keep up the great work :)

I have had a Baratza encore for a while, I was thinking of getting the zp6. Do you think this is worth it in your opinion?
@SMspazzle
@SMspazzle Жыл бұрын
@@sal6794 use to have a baratza encore before it died on me. The difference in my opinion is the grind consistency. Zp6 is more consistent with grind quality and has less fines. Which results in a less muddy bed on a v60 and slightly better flavour. I do recommend it but I do not think the improvement is that much. The encore is a very good filter grinder and easier to clean and put back together than the zp6. All you would be getting with the zp6 is slightly better grind quality.
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick Жыл бұрын
for sure! The look of the burr seems similar, but they actually are manufactured quite differently with different tolerances. The burr in the ZP6 is more precise. and, the alignment is much better. All that plus a lower rpm (around 120 with handgrinding) will give a much better particle distribution

About those magnetic catch cups: They're nice, basically - but they can be dangerous, at least on finer espresso grinds that require a more vigorous hand motion. My step-dad (late 70's) was visiting last week and wanted to take over grinding duties for the espresso machine. He hadn't realized how much strength it would require; about 25-30 turns in, he bumped the catch cup, sending it flying across the kitchen. Besides the mess, the aluminum cup took several good dings, one of them along the magnet line. It still works OK, but there are now a couple catch-cup-positions that don't hold as well as they should. Before grinding I have to jiggle it a little to make sure it holds right. That wasn't the first time this has happened, but definitely the most spectacular.
@rather-reverend
@rather-reverend Жыл бұрын
Oh, also, about the blind shaker thing: If the o-ring gets even a bit messy, it doesn't hold quite as well as it should. I've accidentally knocked it loose a couple of times. The results weren't TOO bad, but it's fiddly.
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick Жыл бұрын
oh wow! I've not experienced these issues, but mainly because I grind in a very controlled manner. I have found better results grinding under 120rpm. I find most people go really fast, and this is what can cause the mayhem it seems you experienced haha! I understand the desire to rip through the coffee quickly, but you'll likely have a better result slowing down (and loads more mess ha!)
@rather-reverend
@rather-reverend Жыл бұрын
@@LanceHedrick Heh. It was more a strength issue on espresso settings. He wasn't grinding very fast, but when you're struggling to keep your rhythm you tend to kind of jerk the handle around. And if the bottom of your palm is right on the line between grinder and cup, that can knock the cup off. I've had a couple whoopsies of my own, but nowhere near that extravagant.

@cinemapigeon4898
@cinemapigeon4898 Жыл бұрын
Normcore is great. I have it, and I prefer it to a higher end/more expensive 1zpresso (JX-PRO) I had a year ago. The fewer clicks per revolution (still plenty for dialing in) makes dialing in brews easier/quicker (can still grind for any brew), and my JX-Pro was very off with its recommend settings that I wasn't able or willing to spend the extra time to get determine what setting worked with what brew (I calibrated, took it apart, etc... never got it right, seemed like I had 400 clicks/settings which was insane, should only have been a few hundred). Normcore will realistically stay within 70 clicks. However... I am perhaps interested in the JX Manual due to larger grinding capacity and faster grinding. I don't grind for espresso (Normcore would have JX Manual beat in that regard), but the quality of life improvements with larger batches and faster grinding may be nice. Normcore is dollar per dollar one of the on the market though.

I ended up getting the Jmax which has been grinding perfect for espresso. Funny thing is when I had ordered the Jmax, they had accidently sent me the Kplus and almost considered keeping that instead of the Jmax but couldn't decide what differences made the difference. I did end up getting the correct one though. I can get very fine grinds for slayer type espresso pulls but I am glad that you went over why I can't get a great pour over with the burrs and fines. It took me so darn long to figure out how to calibrate my J-Max, it took over a week of playing with it and watching various videos and I nearly gave up but I eventually got it figured out. Your explanation is about as helpful as most of the other ones, which isn't very much, but at the same time, it IS kind of hard to explain, and for me I just kind of had to mess with it until I figured it out. If you are confused as to how to calibrate it, don't feel bad! Just think of the top nut as kind of a limiter, and it's hard to move if you're tightened all the way, so you might need to coarsen, then push up on the burr, and move it a click or two, then fine up the burr to make sure it starts at 0. That probably didn't help either, but again, it's hard to explain, but once you figure it out, it'll make sense, I promise!

After reading what GOAT had to say on burr spacing vs burr gap in conical burrs, and running tests on my Lido and Kinu, I think a quick and dirty conversion is to divide the burr gap by 3 to get the approximate burr spacing. So for burrs that are 300um apart, that roughly translates into 100um burr spacing. Again - quick and dirty, and better for a starting point rather than directly translating between grinders.

I want to buy X-pro for pour over but afraid from the point that X-pro tends to show more acidity . Does this mean that the sweetness in the pour over coffee is low ? Can I adjust that by grinding finer ?

Just an extra titbit. the pronunciation "1z" in Mandarin is the same as the word (意式) in Chinese, which means Italian style and is used as a synonym for espresso.

Lance, I have a Kingrinder K6 that I have had for about three months now and I am looking to upgrade. No, I don't have upgraditis, I really think a different grinder would be ideal for me. It isn't that the K6 produces a bad shot of espresso or even on that I don't prefer, it is good. However, I do worry about the longevity of the grinder. After around two months it started acting up, in that it was not changing grind settings when I dialed the ring in. Well, when you push on the bottom of the burr to remove it for cleaning, it turns out that it was getting stuck that way I've not actually disassembled it though just pushed up on it to clean. Turned out to have a tiny bit of rust where the shaft goes through the bearing (or something, I'm not mechanically knowledgeable) and some food grade lubricant fixed that issue. I've not had it happen since. However, it did change from zero at -4 clicks, to -9 and now to -19 without ever actually disassembling it, fwiw. Anyway, my concern is the build quality more than the shot quality. However, I will note that I get about 1 click to dial in the perfect, for me, shot of espresso. I like a tight 2:1 with darker roasted modern coffees like Onyx Eclipse. So, I was thinking that the J-Max might be a good addition as I might be able to squeeze a setting in with a click on either side when dialing in. However, I travel and thought the X-pro would be interesting too for the size difference. Flavor wise, I like more chocolates with a balanced acidity most of the time. (I like the profile from my modified C2 (half clicks) fine as well). I am not against a bright shot though as I do occasionally pull shots with natural Ethiopians. As an aside, I will note that I grind out, on average, 5 shots a day. I know this makes me a candidate for an electric grinder but I am moving country in about 7 months and the voltage is different so that will have to wait. Besides, I don't mind hand grinding. Also, I almost never drink filter coffee so that isn't really a consideration. Any thoughts, if you get a chance to see this book would be great. Whether, it be one of these 1zpressos or something else. Anyone else feel free to jump in with recommendations if you have them too. It'd be much appreciated. Thank you as always for the wonderful content.

My roommate and I use a JX for our daily coffee grinding, not only can we dial it in really well to our very different coffees (I drink light roasts and they drink dark roasts) but it's also grinds so smoothly and wish such ease that I don't really see the point of buying an electric grinder.

Amazing video! Suprisingly i did a blind taste of the zp6 and k ultra and we both preffered the k ultra. Any recommendations for dialing in the zp6? Maybe how you pour? Grind? Temprature? Coffee proccesing?
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick 12 сағат бұрын
If you enjoy darker roasts, you may simply prefer k plus! Zp6 isn't objectively better. It just gives a more clear and pleasant brew, highlighting florals and juicy aspects the k ultra can't give with lighter roasts.

I emailed 1zpresso about the ZP6 Special, and the possibility of them making an upgraded version with a magnetic catch cup. They said that the JS burr set that it uses might not be continued and the ZP6 Special will not be restocked after the current stock runs out, which just feels ridiculous. Every review I've seen of this thing is stating that it's the best conical brew grinder out there. I don't get why 1zpresso would just decide to forgo such a significant market.

I ordered the zp6 special. I am using it in combination with my April brewer. Still playing with the settings a little bit. But such a clear and well tasting cup right from the get go. You can’t ga wrong with the zp6 when it comes to filter.
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick Жыл бұрын
Oh yes! The zp6 rocks. April dripper is a bit difficult, though. It is built to underextract. I would recommend either double grinding your coffee to add some fines or try to flatten the filter to slow up the drawdown!
Жыл бұрын
@@LanceHedrick I have really good experience with April dripper + April recipe if I grind much-much finer than they recommend, like Aeropress - almost moka pot fine. Because of the recipe there is still no clogging and reasonable drawdown and I prefer the higher extraction I can achieve this way. I can still achieve better taste with other methods (even when using the April dripper), but the method's simplicity has its charm.
@remdehair.
@remdehair. Жыл бұрын
@@LanceHedrick I did not know that yet. But my experience did tell me something like you are describing. I have been experimenting quite a bit now and start to get the hang of it now I feel like. When doing everything quite right it delivers really great coffee I must say.
@remdehair.
@remdehair. Жыл бұрын
@ I feel like I have that same experience. I can really grind way finer then most people recommend the only “drawback” is a bit more bittery after taste but with the zp6 it is not a unpleasant taste. Though when grinding coarser you get more of that really nice light fruity taste with less bittery tones. So I also do understand that wat Lance is recommending is probably going to be the best of both worlds possibly.
