I have no definitive info on the reason for the handle change aside from Internet forum rumours. And plenty of 1zpresso grinders still have “the” handle design 🤷‍♂️ I also think the C40 is an excellent grinder!

it's a patent dispute that is a German market (and potentially EU) specific. the not to be named German hand grinder company holds a patent on the specific handle shape, which means that you can officially only buy 1zpresso grinders with the new handle shape.

After watcing again, I'm compelled to add a second comment! This review should honestly be pinned in the r/pourover sub. The explanation of the pros and cons of 'high clarity' grinders, plus the direct comparison to two other frequently discussed ZP6 competitors makes this a very informative video for those getting deep into pour over. I've owned the three grinders discussed here. I think your take is 100% spot on.

Very good review in a rapidly evolving market. How about the new Timemore S3? Supposed to be two steps up from their C2 and one from C3 with upgraded burr and tighter tolerances. Just a thought: perhaps the idea of one hand grinder for both pour over and espresso could be a chimera. Very different type of grinder needed for either, I suspect. I’m exclusively a pour over guy and use an old LIDO OE grinder that in its day was top-shelf. Probably no longer! 😊

I was inspired by this and the momentum vid, and as a Zp6 owner I had to try the following: Grinder Zeroed at 3 click before 0. Same coffee (10g) On a negotiated orea v3 & kalita wave filters. Same recipe. Clicks are calculated from 0 (not the 3 before). For the pour 1 I went as far open as the grinder would allow (45clicks on the second rotation), and then ground again at my normal test setting (at 55 clicks). For pour 2, I went with my normal tesr setting. Cup 1 was noticeable "cleaner" in its taste, while cup 2 was slightly more astringent. That being said the difference was only noticeable when tasted side by side & I don't know if double grinding my coffee is something I'll do on the daily. I'd love a deep dive into double grinding though. I think there's a discussion to be had on how this could change the value of low/mid range grinders. I'd also love your thoughts on how much closer it brings the cup to the tatse of the pietro, if at all! On a side note, grinding coffee straight from the freezer makes a much larger difference then the double grind.

Well done. So before watching, I was on the fence about ZP6, K Ultra, or Kinu M47 (with both burrs included). My current setup is Timemore C2, & an upgrade will give me an elevated experience (whether that’s “well-rounded” or with greater clarity). My guess is that I will clearly find separation and clarity with ZP6 or Kinu with the pourover burr. My wondering is if there is more bang for the buck with both burrs included w/ Kinu, and that my new daily grinder will work with most light to medium roasts (clean or funky) for a working dad who makes one big cup and has to get moving in the morning 😅

I am really always changing this around, but generally it's almost always a pulse pour recipe. Hoffmans 1-cup v60 recipe (A Better 1 Cup Recipe) is a great starting point. I go for a slightly longer bloom and mess with the temperature depending on the bean. I do have a Deep27 and UFO review posted recently if you use either of those that have a recipe too.

It's been a while since I had the K series but I remember it being pretty high clarity too but it is q bit more traditional profile and versatile as you say. Wouldn't say its low clarity for light roasts though which some people may have inferred. Glad you mentioned that higher clarity profile may not be what everyone really wants thats true or you may not want it all the time for every type of coffee. If your coffee has flaws or is bad coffee it makes it worse generally lol. My coffee set up has a lower clarity / higher body more traditional option, I want that at least for espreeso sometimes for pourovers I'm usually going to want a higher clarity one since I'm usually doing it with a fancy light roast.

I bought these grinder after owning the comandante and using it on a daily basis since 2020. I wanted to love this grinder more than my comandante, but so far it hasn't been the case, I'm still experimenting with it so my mind might change on it when calibrating the grinder to find 0, it seemed impossible because the handle locks up in certain places on the handlespin, but other places it's loose, making me thing it's not aligned, I contacted 1zpresso with a video of it and they say it's not faulty, I have made really good brews with it, but when comparing head to head to the comandante I've been favoring comandante (so far at least) maybe years of seasoning the burrs with the comandante, Maybe I've adjusted my brew method and perfectly dialed in the grind setting on the comandante What I don't like about the 1zpresso is to have to calibrate it everytime I clean it, especially since calibrating it seems like an inconsistant task because I don't really know what 0 is supposed to be because it locks up in different places depending on where the handle is facing

I got an 1zpresso K Ultra as well as the ZP6. The Ultra is superior in terms if usability. It grinds more than twice as fast, has the magnetic catch cup and is also capable of espresso. So you might think, jack of all trades master of none. But overall, I was surprised how well the Ultra performed compared with the "holy grail" ZP6. It comes across more "juicy" and fruity, but it is a bit more blended and less crisp. That said, I am not sure if it is worth having both, as the Ultra is by no means just "capable" of filter, it is a real pleasure. The difference to the ZP6 is there, but surprisingly subtle overall. We are talking of the last percents. And they both outperform the Comandante in like every aspect. Btw, great review as always, shoutout to your significant other as well, relatable and charming- really helps putting your opinion into perspektive

Thank you so much! And agreed here - the K-Ultra is an incredible grinder. Sometimes I think when people hear that the ZP6 is clearer they infer that the K-Ultra is muddy or overly complex. It’s not. The way you’ve described it as juicy really perfectly describes its vibe. It’s a “big” cup in a good way and full of flavor. Fantastic grinder and probably my current overall fave from the 1zpresso line.
@ph1ber

Personally my biggest issue with the K-Ultra was that while it's technically capable of espresso, I often had the issue that even 1 click was changing brew times a lot. Obviously you could then try to change other variables to achieve the best taste, but at least for light roasts it was kind of frustrating. I actually switched to ZP6 for pour over and J-Ultra for espresso.

I made a video demonstrating but never posted it due to myself being in the video lol. @dabougi8063 2 ай бұрын
@@BensCoffeeRantsmy zp6 works exactly as your friends one does. It is slow, but so is f.e. the comandante, and for filter I have no problem with that. I like the process and I am still faster than the water is heating up. The last popcorning is a bit annoying- strange that you do not experience this yourself. Anyhow, the contrast to the Ultra is massive, even for my 16g Espresso Grounds I am done in about 20-25sec, you really feel how the beens get "sucked in". I knew this f.e. from my espresso focused BPlus Apollo (which I never tried for filter). So I was surprised, that the Ultra gives you great filter cups even with the kind of aggressive burr geometry

Great video, beautiful production too. Agree with all of your points and takeaways as I have many grinders as well. Did you try slow feeding the ZP6, hold it horizontal and take an extra minute to grind? I definitely notice good difference and easy to do whereas slow feeding the Pietro isn't. I wonder how much that would close the clarity gap between them? But definitely not the end all be all metric like you said.
@DaddyGotCoffee
@DaddyGotCoffee 2 ай бұрын
I did try slow feeding and on an angle but still found a gap there. SOmeone did suggest grinding first on the coarsest setting and then grinding again on the final setting and removing chaff in between. I would like to try that in a blind test against the pietro. The pietro with bro brews does have a pretty slow feed with the way its designed.

Sometimes it’s just a mood thing, I’m looking for more juiciness and “big” factor in a cup. Other times I find the makeup of a coffee doesn’t lend itself well to that level of flavor clarity/separation for a variety of reasons. Like, a lemongrass note that may come across almost candied with a more blended profile can sometimes get highlighted in a more individual and less flattering way on the ZP6/Pietro. It’s highly dependent on the coffee in cases like this and really varies when it comes to flavor expression. Just my experience!

Thanks for this review, I'm always relying on your honest reviews to get the true and real answers. Please keep it on. A question please, if I used any other grinder such as 1zpresso kplus or ode fellow gen2 then used a coffee sifter to remove fines, does that give me the same clarity results as of from zp6? Because if the answer is yes, then I believe I don't need to buy zp6, right?
@DaddyGotCoffee
@DaddyGotCoffee 2 ай бұрын
Sifters do def help and will improve clarity - they're not without their issues though. COffee particles are not perfect spheres, often they are more shard like. So some fines can make it through the sieve while other don't even if they are the same size/weight. Also, consistency in sieving is more difficult depending on your time/method of shaking. Lastly, since sieving technically removes part of the dose, dosing accurately can be more finicky. It can improve clarity, but a lot of a brews character comes from the shape of grounds a specific burr produces, not just the particle size distribution. But it would get you closer for sure!

I’m wondering whether I should get a ZP6 and J-Ultra-one for filter and one for espresso-or if I should go for an all-rounder like the Casa. I have a zp6 and a df83 with ssp mp burrs. I actually prefer the zp6 as the flavors are a bit more integrated than ssp mp. For my taste, ssp mp definitely has more clarity but it is more prone to pull astringency. I feel sometimes ultra clarity brews lack balance and probably shouldn't be the #1 quality that everyone chases. Flavor integration is nice too sometimes.

Thanks for these reviews. At some point I hope you can recommend budget grinders for absolute beginners to this hobby, including the KINGrinder P2, various Timemore grinders and others. This is a hard one because it’s so dependent on your preferences. In some ways, yes. But the ZP6 is also less flattering overall than the K and more revealing. If it’s your only hand grinder, I would say you’ll have a more well rounded experience with the K. If you really are looking for a lot of clarity then the Z delivers. I put the K in a very similar zone to the Comandante C40 for reference. So while it’s not as “clear” as the Z it’s still an excellent filter grinder. Hope that helps!
