I was inspired by this and the momentum vid, and as a Zp6 owner I had to try the following: Grinder Zeroed at 3 click before 0. Same coffee (10g) On a negotiated orea v3 & kalita wave filters. Same recipe. Clicks are calculated from 0 (not the 3 before). For the pour 1 I went as far open as the grinder would allow (45clicks on the second rotation), and then ground again at my normal test setting (at 55 clicks). For pour 2, I went with my normal tesr setting. Cup 1 was noticeable "cleaner" in its taste, while cup 2 was slightly more astringent. That being said the difference was only noticeable when tasted side by side & I don't know if double grinding my coffee is something I'll do on the daily. I'd love a deep dive into double grinding though. I think there's a discussion to be had on how this could change the value of low/mid range grinders. I'd also love your thoughts on how much closer it brings the cup to the tatse of the pietro, if at all! On a side note, grinding coffee straight from the freezer makes a much larger difference then the double grind.

My guess is that I will clearly find separation and clarity with ZP6 or Kinu with the pourover burr. My wondering is if there is more bang for the buck with both burrs included w/ Kinu, and that my new daily grinder will work with most light to medium roasts (clean or funky) for a working dad who makes one big cup and has to get moving in the morning 😅

Glad you mentioned that higher clarity profile may not be what everyone really wants thats true or you may not want it all the time for every type of coffee. If your coffee has flaws or is bad coffee it makes it worse generally lol. I bought these grinder after owning the comandante and using it on a daily basis since 2020. I wanted to love this grinder more than my comandante, but so far it hasn't been the case, I'm still experimenting with it so my mind might change on it when calibrating the grinder to find 0, it seemed impossible because the handle locks up in certain places on the handlespin, but other places it's loose, making me thing it's not aligned, I contacted 1zpresso with a video of it and they say it's not faulty, I have made really good brews with it, but when comparing head to head to the comandante I've been favoring comandante (so far at least) maybe years of seasoning the burrs with the comandante, Maybe I've adjusted my brew method and perfectly dialed in the grind setting on the comandante What I don't like about the 1zpresso is to have to calibrate it everytime I clean it, especially since calibrating it seems like an inconsistant task because I don't really know what 0 is supposed to be because it locks up in different places depending on where the handle is facing

I got an 1zpresso K Ultra as well as the ZP6. The Ultra is superior in terms if usability. It grinds more than twice as fast, has the magnetic catch cup and is also capable of espresso. So you might think, jack of all trades master of none. But overall, I was surprised how well the Ultra performed compared with the "holy grail" ZP6. It comes across more "juicy" and fruity, but it is a bit more blended and less crisp. That said, I am not sure if it is worth having both, as the Ultra is by no means just "capable" of filter, it is a real pleasure. The difference to the ZP6 is there, but surprisingly subtle overall. We are talking of the last percents. And they both outperform the Comandante in like every aspect. Btw, great review as always, shoutout to your significant other as well, relatable and charming- really helps putting your opinion into perspektive

Thank you so much! And agreed here - the K-Ultra is an incredible grinder. Sometimes I think when people hear that the ZP6 is clearer they infer that the K-Ultra is muddy or overly complex. It’s not. Fantastic grinder and probably my current overall fave from the 1zpresso line.
@ph1ber2 ай бұрын
Personally my biggest issue with the K-Ultra was that while it's technically capable of espresso, I often had the issue that even 1 click was changing brew times a lot. Obviously you could then try to change other variables to achieve the best taste, but at least for light roasts it was kind of frustrating. I actually switched to ZP6 for pour over and J-Ultra for espresso.

Anyhow, the contrast to the Ultra is massive, even for my 16g Espresso Grounds I am done in about 20-25sec, you really feel how the beens get "sucked in". Sometimes it’s just a mood thing, I’m looking for more juiciness and “big” factor in a cup. Other times I find the makeup of a coffee doesn’t lend itself well to that level of flavor clarity/separation for a variety of reasons. Like, a lemongrass note that may come across almost candied with a more blended profile can sometimes get highlighted in a more individual and less flattering way on the ZP6/Pietro. It’s highly dependent on the coffee in cases like this and really varies when it comes to flavor expression. Just my experience!

Thanks for this review, I'm always relying on your honest reviews to get the true and real answers. Please keep it on. A question please, if I used any other grinder such as 1zpresso kplus or ode fellow gen2 then used a coffee sifter to remove fines, does that give me the same clarity results as of from zp6? Because if the answer is yes, then I believe I don't need to buy zp6, right?
@DaddyGotCoffee2 ай бұрын
Sifters do def help and will improve clarity - they're not without their issues though. COffee particles are not perfect spheres, often they are more shard like. So some fines can make it through the sieve while other don't even if they are the same size/weight. Also, consistency in sieving is more difficult depending on your time/method of shaking. Lastly, since sieving technically removes part of the dose, dosing accurately can be more finicky. It can improve clarity, but a lot of a brews character comes from the shape of grounds a specific burr produces, not just the particle size distribution. But it would get you closer for sure!

I'm not sure I'll ever do a full video on this - who knows though! - but I use 2x Aputure Amaran 200x. The key light is just off to the right of the camera and with a light dome on it. The second light is off to the left almost adjacent to the counter and has a lantern on it. I use it as a combo rim/fill light on the subect (me/sarah) and background fill. Hope that helps!

Can’t believe that you posted this a few days after I requested it! Thank you this is super helpful! This isn’t a super comparison but how does zp6 compare to mazzer philos 200d? I have a j ultra currently for espresso and looking for the next grinder for filter!

I find the ZP6 to be higher clarity cups for sure. Generally I find that when it comes to clarity its next to impossible to beat hand grinding. I have a lot of really great electric grinders with incredible burrs and I still prefer the cups from hand grinders.
@techtenniz2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! This is actually super interesting because I would have expected that bigger burrs (often in electric) has better clarity like the EK43! Maybe neither burr size or electric is relevant! Would definitely love some education on this topic!

I really wanted to try out the Pietro but the price was a dealbreaker for me, considering all the lack of QoL features, I ended up buyin a ZP6 that I use for light roasts and a chestnut nano for medium roasts. Hopefully I get to try the pietro when I travel to a bigger city and see if it convinces me, but I'm really happy with myt set up so far.

This is a great setup you should feel good about. Would the pietro take you further? Sure... a bit. But is it worth the huge jump in price? I think that answer is really dependent on the individual.

Can any ZP6 owner share his experience with the grind setting? I read Lance is between 5-6, while others mention 3.5-4 (which in my case produces way too much astringency). I personally prefer 4.7 and hardly ever change the setting

Recently thought about upgrading my cheap hand grinder to either the Zp6 or Pietro and I think you might have just sold me on the Pietro, lol. I just hope I don't mind the workflow too much but I am looking for the highest clarity brew. One question though, is the Pietro more noisy? especially with it being on top on a counter/table. I just don't want to make too much noise since I am up very early most mornings.

Typically I’m 4.5-5.5 unless I’m in an edge case type brew situation like a low dose brew with a deep27 or something. I have seen some variance here online and am guessing that at least some of that is due to calibration

How would it compare, say a DF64 gen 2 w/SSP MP (V2?) burrs in regards to filter? Thanks for all your content! Edit: I found your comment about it. I was hoping they would be comparable enough where I wouldn't want to try to get this. Hmmm. "I have a pair of MPV2s I put it up against and a pair of the brews in queue to season and test (I am hoping to do a 64mm burr lineup in the future). So while I can’t speak to the brews, yet, I found with the MPs that astringency could creep in a little easier, and overall I preferred the cups from the hand grinders. It’s possible grinder speed has some impact here with lower speeds producing more favourable results."

Still choosing between K-Ultra and Zp6) Would I miss a lot if go after K-Ultra for filter and Pour Over only?
@DaddyGotCoffee2 ай бұрын
This is a hard one because it’s so dependent on your preferences. In some ways, yes. But the ZP6 is also less flattering overall than the K and more revealing. If it’s your only hand grinder, I would say you’ll have a more well rounded experience with the K. If you really are looking for a lot of clarity then the Z delivers. I put the K in a very similar zone to the Comandante C40 for reference. So while it’s not as “clear” as the Z it’s still an excellent filter grinder. Hope that helps!

I have Kpro and ZP6 special. Kpro is sweeter and juicier. ZP6 definitely clearer and refined. With ZP6 i can push extraction even harder and still get well balanced cups which is surprising. I'd say that for most medium roasts K series do better. For light roasts ZP6 is still BETTER.

If I'll go for the PIETRO and I'll plan to use it both for espresso and filter, do you suggest to buy both Probrew burrs for filter and multi purpose for espresso? I have a jmax, but I am looking for a dedicated filter grinder. I’m trying to decide between the kingrinder k6 and the zp6. I do like clarity but not all the time. Would the k6 be a step backwards from my jmax or a welcome compliment? Should I just go with the zp6?
@DaddyGotCoffeeАй бұрын
I am working on getting both of these grinders to test, but general consensus seems to be the the k6 leans to pour over and the J to espresso, although they are both allrounders. If you wanted a really different experience you could grab a zp6 but you may. It prefer it all the time:)

@@DaddyGotCoffee in your opinion having used the zp6, is it truly only best when used with light roast coffee? I do prefer light roast, but I also drink a fair amount of medium, but still with a more fruity profile than chocolate and nuts.

@@_ssarine I would say it excels at higher quality coffees as opposed to just light roasts. You can have a bad light that tastes nasty on a zp6 and decent on other grinders - very revealing. Hope that helps!

@@DaddyGotCoffee thanks. One more follow up question since you’re the only one answering my questions that has experience with the zp6. So, it sounds like this is a grinder for very specific coffees/roasts. Am I better to consider other 1zpresso grinders that are good for mainly filter (again, I already own the j-max), such as the x-ultra or the kingrinder k6? My budget is $200. I do prefer the adjusting method of 1zpresso over the traditional bottom adjustment.

@@_ssarine My overall favourite from 1Zpresso is the K line. Its a really good all-rounder and generally flattering burr. I haven't tested the lower end K's but to my knowledge it's the same burr across the line. When people come asking for ONE all-around 1zpresso grinder, I almost always recommend the K. I have not tested the X. The Kingrinder K6 would be in a similar zone with a slightly different profile:)
