1ZZ-FED Engine Rebuild - TEARDOWN

In this episode we start our Toyota 1ZZ engine rebuild! These engines are super common, as they come in the Celica, Mr2, Corolla, Matrix, Vibe.
Can we use this super common engine to do something super cool?

It’s coming!!!! Haven’t been able to get the Mr2 moved out to the new shop since it’s currently up on jack stands. Don’t worry though it’s at the top of my list!

The 1zz and 2zz engine can not be honed. The cylinder walls are CMC coated which prevents honing and machining.

Hey there! thanks for the comment! In all of my research the 2zz is the one that cannot be honed, but the 1zz cylinders are lined with cast iron and can be honed. Hoping you can help me verify this so I know I am not going crazy!! haha

@ yes the 1zz is cast iron and a little different than the 2zz but it is only very thinly sleeved so it’s easy to burn through it with an aggressive hone and if you do the block is essentially garbage.

Okay! Thank you for the info. Seems like 1zzs can safely be bored out to a 79.5mm bore with no sleeves. With that in mind, scuffing up the surface with a ball hone should not be an issue! Thanks for looking out!
