This video is not for those with a short attention span. I intentionally made this video long to review every aspect of how I broke down my 1ZZ into a bare block. Originally, I wanted to remove the cylinder head, rebuild it, and replace the head gasket. Needless to write, I took it a little farther and completely disassembled the block. I hope others can use this video as a reference and as inspiration to get their hands dirty. Bare in mind, I'm not a professional engine builder, but merely an enthusiast who likes to learn. I encourage comments, questions, feedback, and also appreciate a like and a subscribe.
Additionally, I finally broke down and purchased Adobe Premiere and I'm enjoying learning the ins and outs of this powerful program. Some have said my videos are amateur and I'm ok with that. I create these videos bc there's a lot of bad content out there and my goal is to share with the everyone what I'm working on. By surrounding myself with industry professionals and leaning on them for their guidance and expertise, hopefully, you can learn with me. Thank you for joining me on this automotive journey.
Please check out my new eStore - www.relentlessracing.myshopify.com
I'll be uploading more product lines soon.
Stay tuned... bc this automotive journey is just starting!!!
Thx,
AJ

1zz fe is an underrated platform. They dont have insane performance or anything but they perform well for what they are while keeping fuel consumption pretty low. They boast a pretty high power to weight ratio as well and pretty good torque, their hp is adequate for their intended purpose as well. Overall just a good engine that actually outclassed most of its competitors in its leauge through higher performance output and combined effciency.

Agreed. It’s a motor w not a lot of HP or torque, but it definitely serves its purpose. Although, Toyota did have some issues w the 1ZZ-FED in the MRS between 2000 to 2002 w excessive oil burning. They did resolve the issue in 2003, but that’s why I rebuilt this motor. Thx for watching and commenting. Pls subscribe. -AJ

This is the video I've been looking for. My 1ZZ (from a 2004 Pontiac Vibe, 235k miles) lost all compression to cylinder 1 last weekend. I've got a back-up car and a plan to investigate and attempt to repair. I'm guessing a broken valve, but I'm not a mechanic.

@RelentlessRacingAJ
@RelentlessRacingAJ Ай бұрын
Almost correct… the Celica came w a 1ZZ-FED like the MRS. The 1ZZ-FE has different cams, valves, crank and fuel rail & puts out less power. Also, you have to drill and tap holes for the axle carrier. However, the rebuild follows the same process. Thx for watching and commenting. Pls subscribe. -AJ

Just watched to see how the process is mainly done, I've been thinking of rebuilding a 179,000 mile 1zz in my 21 year old Celica. It's a nice old style Toyota engine even though the power output is dated now but I wanted to keep the car original while rebuilding it. Also wanted to ask if you ever measured the mpg on your MR2, the best I got was 41 mpg on the highway in the Celica.

Like your video! Your MR2/S looks very low mileage and certainly not run in the salts of winter that kill so many vehicles. How many miles? @7:23 in video, even the bolts and head are in new condition, but later, the cam cover looks old....? Is block painted?....the more I watch, the more I see this engine has been serviced b/4 this video...? Also oil pan does not looks Toyota OEM.....what is up? Do not know of any bearing issues with 1zz/2zz unless oil low. I purchased 2zz with over 100k miles and looked like a turd. Inside, bearings perfect, bores very minimal wear. Still ringed and added all bearings to Toyota color/number code, measured and confirmed with Plastigauge. Any idea on head-gasket failure? After further watching, not head gasket, engine was run low on oil and damaged bearings and bores furthest from the oil pump. Low oil caused damage and circulated through the full oiling system. PS: Liked that you pointed out TDC- Compression, vs TDC Exhaust. A timing nightmare when setting valve clearance. Final Q: After all this work and pulling engine, why did you not go with the 2ZZ-GE? Much more fun and more reliable. Early 1ZZ-FE's had CAT and oil-ring issues....I know this b/c I purchased an 01 MR2/S with under 60k miles that burned oil at the rate of 1qt per 300 miles. I think a Mercury 2-stroke outboard burns less oil! Very interested in M.Y. of this engine as the oil rings still look acceptable. PS2: Go 2ZZ-GE. K is more powerful, but much more difficult and returns on labor is not enough. PS3: You have rods loose. Engine out. Pull crank shaft and have easy access to push pistons out w/o having to worry about any bore damage (lol it cast iron sleeve on 1zz)....but if this far in, should be checking main bearings....especially since oil starvation is suspect. P-Chi 01-MR2/S, 2ZZ-GE, 6spd, LSD (Toyota)

Whoa... were you on crack when you wrote this? Chill. I have no clue how many miles were on this motor. I pressure washed the motor b4 I pulled it out of the car. The block is not painted. Idk if the motor was serviced b4 this video. It had a Dorman oil pan on it. They are only $60 and are almost identical to the OEM oil pan. Pls stop with the "OEM is best" stuff because I use a ton of aftermarket parts without issue. It was a head gasket failure. I'm not sure what you are seeing, but there was minimal rod and main bearing wear. Yes, I showed everything in the video (use the chapters to skip around if you missed something). I opted to rebuild a 1ZZ to learn the motor. Note, I also have a 2ZZ, K20, and K20/24 build in process. FYI - the 2ZZ is very similar to the 1ZZ, but the 2ZZ is prone to oil pressure issues and cam wiping. It is not what I consider a reliable motor and its output leaves a lot to be desired. I rebuilt a 2ZZ and am in the process of rebuilding a C60 transmission... both will be swapped into one of my MRS'. Just like the 1ZZ, I built the 2ZZ to learn about the motor and swap. FYI - you can't tell if oil rings are acceptable by visual inspection. Lastly, I checked the main bearings and there was minimal to no wear on the mains. Again, I don't know what you are seeing, but there was no evidence of oil starvation. Thx for watching and commenting. Pls subscribe. -AJ

Need a bit of help from anyone who happens by: I'm also trying to source a '03 or later 1ZZ for my 2001 (engine blew), but they're rare. Those that I do find have no specific year listed; however, the heatshield design appears different. My exhaust manifold has two 02 sensors sticking out of the exhaust manifold in a V shape, while most every 1ZZ I find online, even those listed as being for an MR2 specifically, has a different heatshield design with a single 02 sensor sticking straight up from the exhaust manifold. Was this part of the 03 and later redesign that fixed the oil consumption issue? Or are these motors from other vehicles and just mislabeled?

I’m not an expert w all the different 1ZZs, but I believe all the 1ZZs have VIN plates on them and you can search them on the internet. That’s how I know I have a 2003 Matrix 1ZZ built in Canada. I’m sure w a lil research you can figure out the details of the different 1ZZs. @@RelentlessRacingAJ Much appreciated, brother. Did some more research. The plate in question is down near the flywheel. Makes the retailers on eBay seem pretty sketchy for not disclosing what year the motor is they're selling. And I figured out the heatshield thing. Thx for watching and commenting on my video. I bought the this motor from a friend who 2ZZ swapped his MR2 Spyder so I don't know how many km's were on it when I got it. Although, I do know it is from a Canadian 2003 Matrix based on the VIN tag on the block. Pls subscribe for more MR2 Spyder content. Thx again, AJ

I did my head gasket in the car but it needed new valve seals and I didn't do them then. Put it back together, burns oil.

Thx for watching and pls subscribe. Wow that seems like it would be very challenging. How bad was it? Also, why didn’t u do a complete rebuild of the head when it was out?

Good question. The valve spring tool I bought didn't work. I guess I didn't think I would need to replace those. So now I am doing k swap, waiting months and months and months for parts through MAP. I kind of want to get refund wait is ridiculous

@@supers0nic77 as I mentioned in the vid, I’m doin a Kswap as well. Waiting on custom rods from CP. In the meantime. I want to get her running again, but I’m struggling w my OCD. After finding the scoring in cyl 4, I want bore it out to 79.5 and install new pistons, but I kno this will take money away from my k swap.

I really want to keep it 1zz but the k is proven in power and reliability and aftermarket products. So in a way I'm a little sad because 1zz turbo is capable but I'm not convinced of the reliability. But either way these cars are so much fun and way underrated

TBH, I have never worked on a 1ZZ non-VVTI engine, but they are all pretty much the same. I suggest ordering the OE service manual and following it closely... Toyota service manuals are filled with step by step instructions and excellent detail.

The torx you say 10 mm is also very thin in Turkey. What does it say on the nickel plate of the torx you have in your hand?

Yes, but it will be quite the financial investment… sleeves, forged pistons & rods, etc. I would recommend a k swap instead for reliability and much more bang for your buck. Pls subscribe for more MRS content. Thx AJ
