It could've been a bad turbo! If it has a bad seal, oil will enter combustion chamber and cause excessive smoke from tail pipe. Edit: sorry, didn't see the part where you found a broken piece of cylinder #1 in timing cover 😅 That'll do it

What size bolts did you use to bolt the engine to the engine stand

M10x1.5, the required length of the bolt will obviously vary depending on what engine stand is being used.
